Ingersoll-Rand compressor question.

Hello all! This is my first post here and I hope I am in the right forum for this, if not maybe the moderator can move it. I purchased a 1981 Ingersoll-Rand type 30 horizontal air compressor over the weekend (it is replacing my 1957 Kellogg American 321 80gal) and the model number on the plate says A5D1... After many hours of research, I think I’ve narrowed it down to it being a model 242 pump. It is 80 gallon, 5hp single phase motor, square D mag starter. Can anyone confirm that this is indeed a 242 pump?

If I can figure out how to post pictures on here I will post some of this thing as soon as I can. Thank you very much!

Thank you, but it doesn’t match any of those exactly. It is grey in color and has 3 cooler lines that dip from the HP head to the LP head.

I would contact IR directly. I know the older compressors would show 242 or 253 on the tag. Not sure why your tag is different.

I worked for IR or for an IR distributor for nearly 25-years and I've never heard of that nomenclature for a compressor. The 5D1 means that it is a 5 HP compressor driven by a single phase motor, mounted on an 80-gallon horizontal tank, but I don't know what the "A" means in the model name.

If it was built in 1981 the pump is either a 253 or a 242, but it could also be a 2540 (?) which is a 10HP compressor that can be run at a minimum speed that only requires a 5HP motor. I don't remember when they introduced the 242 compressor. Are the cylinder sizes and stroke details included on the pump data plate?

As indicated above it would be best to contact IR directly with the serial number.

yep x2 on the info my 2540 is a 10hp on the tag electric from the factory but now spun by a 5hp electric and the pulley ratio is correct for this setup now . over 2 years now and she is doing just fine .

ya i think its a 240's series by the head design on it . but i am no expert on them .

Thank you all for the responses. I have not contacted IR yet but I will do so soon. The closest I can tell it is a 242. It has 3 cooling tubes from the low pressure side to the high pressure side. I have found others on google with this name plate model number A5D1 but it looks like a 242 in disguise. Stonesfan68 I appreciate the help. Your description of the unit is spot on. If I can ever figure out how to post pictures I will do so.
