I have located an older model 1 hp industrial Craftsman bench grinder with 8 inch wheels.

If anyone has any input regarding these, please let me know.

Thanks.

Funny that this post came up, as I just broke my " Craftsman Industrial grinder" a couple of days ago. I knocked it over by acident and broke the bell off the motor.

Mine (was) probably 15 yeas old and has been an excellent tool. Well balanced and powerful.

It had a 7.7 amp motor. The closest thing I can find to replace it is an 8" Metabo on Amazon for about $250. Most other grinders seem to be in the three to four amp range.

Sears still lists some parts for the unit, but unfortunately the motor housing bell is not one of them. It looks like it is an aluminum-zink die casting so if I can't figure out how to jin up a repair, mine may have to be recycled.

Wow,that really stinks.I did the same thing to a smaller bench grinder. The home made stand was not nearly sturdy enough and was top heavy. I have a 10" Craftsman bench grinder that I bought on Ebay.It was damaged and I had to order new shields and wheel covers. It works fine and never gets bogged down when you push a piece of metal into it. I did have a chore finding replacement stone and wire wheel for it. Not a lot of supply dealers stock the 10". I had to go thru MSC.

the Chinese ones from 10 - 15 years ago get frequent bearing problems. I'd look for something Industrial with an American made motor.

If the part number has a 397 or 257 prefix, get it.

Thanks for the input.

I texted the owner for the part number but regardless I will check it out at 8-9am tomorrow. Asking price is $80. I have no problem spending that if it is worth it. Tools of the past are just something today's tools fall short in with quality, dependability, etc.
