I'm looking for some input/ideas on building a toolbox hutch. Around Christmas time I acquired a Montezuma 72" box. I like it, but I want a hutch.
Here's the problem. The Montezuma hutch is too short, even if I could source one in Canada. I can't find a hutch from a different manufacturer that fits right. So that leaves me with the build one option.
Here's where Garage Journal and its members come in. I would like some input on what works for you, or what you'd like different. This includes the Snap-on, Mac, Matco, Montezuma and any others, not just home builds.
What I'm looking for is:
- Full exterior dimensions (matching the bottom chest) 72" wide x 30" deep.
- Tall enough that I can lean into the hutch without ducking-down. This probably means 30" or taller. I'm 6' tall, not counting work boots.
- A door that "gets out of the way". This probably means going with a bi-fold door. A single panel door might be possible, but it could wind up being a compromise.
-A partial shelf (like the Montezuma) and peg board rear panel.
-Lights, power bar, stereo... that will be added later...
Quality pictures or video of the movement and mechanism of a commercial manufactured hutch may be helpful.
Once I get a solid plan in place, I'll get some drawings put together and submit them to a sheet metal shop. It will probably stay raw steel for a bit while the kinks get worked out, but ultimately painted or powdercoated.
What input do you have?
