Long story shot: I'm out of room, and need to grow again. Background below, my current box thoughts at the bottom. Reference picture of my current setup attached at bottom. Any opinions appreciated.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Customer mentions wanting a timing belt done on a 3.2L gm v6. Whatever, I'll buy the kit, and still make money on that job. Issue being, I am out of room.

The family of boxes and storage is below. Realistically, the Montazuma car is as heavy as I can still maneuver, and stuffed pretty well. The Equipto is all of my non-lockable stuff. Sawzall, grinders, brake bleeder, consumables, extra parts and fabrication stuff, gloves, etc. It is as full as I can get it and still reasonably work out of it. Area in between holds my pry/cheater bars, wand sprayer, funnels, stools, and 1 of my buckets. and the hand tool box for "disposable" or modify-able tools, and my exhaust gasket collection. Old box on the triple is my BS box. Storage of drill/impact bits, smaller bulk consumables, hose/hydraulic fittings, chemicals obviously.

KRL1033 is overfilled. My last two reorganizations have been for space saving only; I am loosing efficiency to gain the space. Granted, I have too much stuff. I have maybe 1/4 of the center bottom drawer somewhat open, but my coolant pressure kit and every inner tie rod tool I have is in there, so maneuvering cases in and out would be tough.

The KRL single stack top is slightly overfilled, it's diagnostic/scope stuff. So power probe leads, all the scope leads (Soooo many), amp probes, all the back probes, etc. I would like to move wiring repair to this location as well. The modis and autel barely fit in the top, get tangled with the leads for my main meter and single channel scope, etc.

Bottom of the KRL single has maybe 1 thin drawer open (worthless), and 1/3 of the top drawer open. Top drawer has my dial indicator stuff, and rarely used air tools. Some of my less used thread repair stuff is in the box (space issue in the 1033), as well as electrical repair. I have all of my wheel bearing sockets, mity-vac and vacuum stuff (should be in diagnostic area), fuel pressure stuff, timing stuff, and the bottom holds my extra scope/scanner connectors and my reference materials.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I love my snap-on boxes, I have drawers full of bearing splitters and steel adapters, they slide great. I also got repair parts for my home box and the single KRL. Long term support is a big deal, I'm expecting to be fixing things of some nature until I cannot work anymore. I am willing to trade/swap stuff, and have a strong preference for red. No interest in the other 3 truck boxes, for various reasons.

So I talked to the nearby Snap-on rep. Want's me to get an 84" epic. I say that's less space than I currently have, inquire about lockers; and am quoted list price off the website. He also suggested I look into a "Mr. Big". I have a meeting planned, but do not expect much positive to come of it.

I have looked at Lista, but have not found a drawer layout I am happy with. I need deeper drawers. Their mesh drawer liners also look crappy. I have very serious doubts a HF box will hold the weight I'm looking for, especially as I want to reorganize all of my press/bearing tools in one central location if the drawers can handle it. I'm thinking a grouping of 3/4 drawers. Craigslist in a 120mi radius over the last 4-5 months has yielded little of interest.

I have cash, or I can finance; whichever offers better terms. Whatever I buy needs wheels, and I'd like to minimize the number of keys on my key rings if I can. I have a hard time swallowing two different color boxes, although my gut tells me ditching the single stack for another triple is in my future. I want to minimize the small drawers, the stuff I'm buying is getting to be bulkier, not many thin drawer occupying screwdriver sets in my future. I could dump my seldom used stuff out of the bottom of the single KRL, and maybe free up a single deep drawer? It's be a piled mess somewhere in the Equipto, but I'd get a drawer.

Looking for opinions/ideas as to a step forward. I remember when the triple was the last box I thought I'd ever need. :spit:

If you are happy with your KRL, I would add a pair of lockers to it.

If you don't have to lock your stuff up, you can build a simple structure and put up some wall control pegboard between the two lockers.

How do you feel about a hutch and overhead cabinet? Lot of bulk storage in those, no floor space required.

A locker type cabinet may be an idea for things like cased tools/kits, funnels & bulk items.
I bought a cheaper Sandusky cabinet from Zoro a few years ago (same overall size as a KRL locker, 24"x30"), It works well in that role for me. I dont move it to speak of though. It is likely a tad overloaded as well.

A single bay box just for "junk drawer" items & spare/extra parts may free up some space. A riser box may help with your current single stack, it'd be plenty tall though.

EDIT;
This is the one I picked up. If I was buying again, I'd look for one a bit more heavy duty.

Simple, buy a top box for the triple bank.

In general, I am anti-top box.

I like my top for beating on hubs, sitting parts on, diagrams, messing with small stuff, etc. I also don't like the number of thin drawers on the top boxes. Honestly for what a top costs, I could likely get another triple. List is 9300. Maybe they'd let me swap drawers? As a triple bay top sits, I'd gain approx 5000 cm3; if I ditched the KRL stack.

I am a lock guy, keeps honest people honest. 1 locker on the left would work, the issue would be the right. The floor has a slop, I'm worried about being able to keep the door open on the right side

I had a Homak cabinet, a bit too flimsy and not secure at all. It's at home now. I will look into Zoro for better quality stuff. Good idea.

Anyone built a base for a Lista or Vidmar stationary cabinet? Not for regular moving, just occasional cleaning and keeping it off the ground.

Shouldnt be too hard, angle iron frame with HD casters ought to work. Casters may be expensive though. surpluscenter.com has a good selection.

First off, shim the casters so the box is level. The locker keys off the box, and I'm assuming you won't be moving it too much once you get into locker territory.

Second, if you can't shim it reliably, you could put a detent on a locker door to keep it open.

I run a KRL1023 with a KRL1099 power cabinet on one side, and a drawer section hanging off the other, effectively a 5 bank. Full. If I were less of a bargain hunter, and more streamlined, I would consolidate and reclaim some space (do I really need 150 screwdrivers?), but as it is I've got space for everything in a mechanic's setup plus a good selection of MBZ, Porsche, Vespa and Lambretta specialty tools. I keep all my machinist stuff in the Taco Box under my lathe.

I'm trying not to outgrow this setup as I'd be moving into hoarder territory by doing so, but I still have the growth option of adding top boxes (KRL1221) on top of my side boxes, or moving to locker(s).

I just test drove a Lista, and I don't think that's the solution for me. They feel a bit more agricultural in use. I'm not writing them off until I've used a brand new one, but the cabinet I had was just ok. Snappy also make permanent work stations, which are in the industrial catalog...if you love KRL, and don't move the box frequently, they can set you up with a wall of storage. Lot's of dealerships have done this.

Also, if you haven't yet, you can condense a lot of pistol type tools by adding the rack system from the power drawer. Part numbers are in this video:

My last suggestion is to put a small sticker on every tool in your box, and remove them when you use the tool. Some number of months later, check your whole box for tools with stickers. If you haven't used it in n months, box it away in a closet somewhere. If you haven't pulled it out of that closet in n years, get rid of it. I'm a hobbyist and a collector, but I find this keeps me honest and makes my toolbox easier to use. I think in a pro setting, this sort of streamlining would improve your time vs book.

buy a matching tripple or double bank, I too hate top boxes.
If got floor space bottoms are way forward.
2 end lockers and custom hutch quite useful, I got 3 matco bottom boxes and one getting lockers (masterforce) and custom hutch. worktop/countertop super useful and I not a fan of drawers at chest height .
