Metal is the way to go. The entire metal interior ceiling included, cost me $2300. Including the 2 million screws you need. Installs very easily. Already painted, no sanding, no mudding, taping, lifting heavy drywall etc etc. and if I want to clean out the place, just hose down the walls and you're good.

The sound never crossed my mind really. The metal pieces are really "dead" sounding when you tap on them because they are secured with tons of screws straight to wood on other side. So it doesn't have that "tin-ey" metal sound like you might think. Haven't used a grinder or anything yet. Hammering is a non-issue. But grinders, table saw, shop vac, even saws-all ... I'll use ear protection. But I'm very conscious of loud noises anyways, so I always use earplugs regardless of whether I'm inside or outside. I've got several different styles and sets. So I'm always protecting my hearing. Even if I was grinding something outside where there's no echo, I'm still using protection. I ride motorcycles and ride my tractor with plugs too. Hell, I even cover my ears at work when I crank up the compressor in the morning before I get out of the compressor room. And I'm 34yrs old so it's not like I'm some weird old dude w un-necessary fears. It's a real thing. Protect your ears man.

What did he say????

When I was younger I was too tough to use hearing protection. Now I use it but don't really need it because there's not much left to use.

Thanks Repsolracer22. I am very familiar with the steel. I installed on the whole exterior of my last shop along with the ceiling.

<------

One of my neighbors has the entire interior of his storage barn finished out in steel. If you stand inside with the doors closed and clap, you hear about 3 quick echos. He doesn't use this barn for work, just stores yard equipment, tractors and a pickup, so i don't know how it is to work in.

The pole barn suppliers have "accoustical steel panels" available for the interior. So that alone would lead me to believe it is at least some what of an issue. They just have a bunch of holes perforated in them.

Nice. Sorry if you already posted this, I tried to look back but didn't see any mention. What size Reznor overhead heater did you go with? NG or LP? What insulation did you go with in the walls?

Thanks.

Mike.

Heater is 125,000 BTU. Calculation only called for about 80-90k at the higest point, but I didnt care. the 125k was only a couple hundred more. I dont have any access to natural gas so I bought a 100gal propane tank and set it outside and ran the line to it. Poked a hole and ran exhaust pipe, and Im in business! The Reznor heater came with a LP conversion kit for like $10 extra.

Ceiling just got completed today. R49 cellulose. Its like 16-18in thick. Its nice. Ill take a pic tomorrow. The walls are R19. Kraft backed

Great, thanks. I am getting ready to start my new shop within the next couple months and will be doing 2x6 walls with R-19 walls and R-49 ceiling so yours is a close comparison. My total size will be 50x60(3000 square feet) with 40x50 (2000 square feet) heated to work in and the other 20x50 for my RV parking. I am going to use a 150k natural gas unit but I will also have 16' ceilings so should be about perfect.

Thanks again and nice looking shop.

Mike.
