I am new to the GF, joining last week. As I learn how to navigate the site I hope to be an active participant. I am a retired mechanical engineer and have been a "gearhead" since high school. My favorite toy growing up was my Gilbert Erector Set, which I still have.

My main interests are Musclecars and to a lesser extend, machinists and mechanic tools and shop equipment. I recently moved from the metro NYC area to the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, VA. My current garage/workshop measures 24 X 30 with clear 13 foot ceilings and is fully insulated. It has about 90,000 lumins of LED lighting, a mini-split HVAC system (heat & AC) and a 100 amp subpanel.

I have been going to garage sales and estate sales for close to 40 years building up my collection. The metro NYC area had a very robust garage/estate sale community due to the population density and age of residents. Not so much in Virginia. Also in the 80's and 90's I searched auto salvage yards picking many desirable auto parts to help with restoration projects and to sell to support the hobby.

In my next post I will outline my tool collection and shop equipment.

Thank You

Welcome to the Forum from Southwestern California. My shop is much smaller but it is enough.

I never studied Engineering but I guess I have always been a “Wannabe”.

Welcome to the forum. Best of luck in your tools and equipment search. Sounds like your search may be more fruitful than here in Utah. I live in a machinery desert for the most part.

Thank you all for your kind words. As promissed in my previous post see below:

My tool collection includes an extensive group of standard mechanic tools (Snap-On, Craftsman, etc.) all stored in a large, 54” wide, deep, Snap-On roller cabinet with a stainless-steel top. It includes all types of wrenches, ¼”, 3/8” ½” drive ratchets/ sockets. Various types of screw drivers and pliers. Air tools include IR and Chicago Pneumatic 3/8” & ½” impacts guns and ratchets, air chisels, die grinders, etc.

Machinists’ tools include all professional quality measuring instruments by Starrett, Brown & Sharp, Mitutoyo and others stored in several Kennedy boxes. I also have a very nice Gerstner Oak Tool Box for those special items.

Shop equipment includes a vintage Delta drill press, a 10” Craftsman (Atlas) metal lathe, a Clausing Knee-type vertical milling machine with digital readout, a large 80 gallon, 2-stage Curtiss Air Compressor, several bench grinders, a Linde Arc Welder, a Mig Welder w/gas and Ox-Acetylene welding/cutting torch.

Other items are an industrial Lyons 10-drawer heavy duty storage cabinet used to store lathe and milling machine tooling, several metal work benches, storage cabinets and metal shelving. Automotive service equipment includes floor jacks, jack stands and an engine crane.
