Hello Forum, I have ended up on this site again and again when researching auction purchases, either for price information or identification. Routinely I find most of the answers I'm looking for. So, I finally joined the Forum.

And I already have a request. I just picked up a Samson (looks like a Yost) 5206. It was locked up but a little light machine oil and a couple of taps with a rubber mallet allowed the jaws to release. Unfortunately what I found inside was a sheared off main nut. It has the numbers 73-93 D on it (see photo).

Two questions, would brazing or welding provide enough strength to allow effective use of the vise (I have both pieces of the nut)?

Or should I be looking for a replacement? If so, anybody out there have one?

Thanks so far for the previous help and thanks ahead of time for whatever info I can get on this issue.

Craig

Welcome....and you are off to a great start...great looking vise.

On that nut.....brazing? Maybe. You could try it. If it doesn't work, then look for a replacement.

There are a lot of great guys in the tool section....'someone' should have an answer.

TMS: brazing might work on your vise nut and i've seen some that were welded that have worked fine for years.

your Samson vise is in great condition everything else considered and if you can't figure out how to braze or weld it then looking for a replacement nut off a broken vise might be your other option.

if you can't find another Sampson vise maybe a Rock Island or a Morgan's vise nut might work cause i think one of those companies might have been the maker of the Sampson vises (not certain about this).

welcome to the site and if you might want to post up your vise repair questions over on vise repair 101 you might get more help or maybe just find your answers on that thread that is getting pretty big.
