Got a chance to start a new receiver for my bench top grinder (Record one).

faded9786181c1c1f61683b51b8eba57.jpg

Just cut some 16mm flat plate left over from the table top so I now have approximately (150mm) or 6" waste. This will get consumed elsewhere.

Lined it up and drilled the four holes.
(Held it in the vice receiver I built before this)
The holes are 7mm so I didn't have a Mag drill that small. Used a tec-screw to drill it and then used a blunt 7mm bit to drill into the depth of each tec-screw hole.
Really cheap and it didn't matter if I used a few (only one used) [emoji3]

3d20fe5b56f477cd705041ceb6c3966b.jpg

Next job will be to cut some square tubing and weld it on below. And add a depth stop on that box iron so it will always go in the same amount.
Rome wasn't built in a day. Neither was this bench. [emoji23]

That weld looks kinda cold to me, but maybe it's the pic. I'd put a cover pass on there too, it it were my project! You're not skimping on material size and thickness, so you don't just want little single-pass welds on there either.

If that's welder-speak for "looks like lack of fusion", what some welders also call "cold-roll", you may be on to something. But I'm not so sure it's not the picture. It's super hard to tell from the pic. But IF the weld were cold, or there were any lack of fusion, that part of the weld should be ground out and the length re-welded.

Cheers Radrush, the castor plates were re-welded over again on all four corners. This helped to fill them out also. The castors will give up twice over before the plates do now. [emoji12][emoji1303]

So the toolbox arrived:

8ad3a3151782a4a416867e55106c9bb6.jpg

This thing is a monster. It's got 5" castors which brings the table top in at 44". Drawers are all solid and the rails are good quality. There is a good feel of quality around it. Very happy with it.

Except for this one thing....

ecc3469d1153263b42cbe49b78ba0ae2.jpg

7c9fad614036ffe1ddf872ac2b09645c.jpg

During assembly I spotted it. It doesn't affect the working of the system but I'm not happy. I've emailed the company and I'll see what they come back with.

The top is still to go onto it.
I'll send on another photo when I get a chance to do that.

Success, The toolbox was replaced by the company who is also the carrier. I was really hoping they would say 'here's a set of wrenches' to make up for the slight damage to the box. Oh well, 100% perfect box, now I need to fill it with tools. It's like a vicious never ending cycle. :)

So, the baby has consumed all of my time... Who knows what I did with all my time before.
Managed to get some work done on the timber bench.

I looked at the extension for the chop saw and wanted to get that sorted. I drilled holes to center up with the 2x4 timbers and then I placed two sheets of plywood (screwed down) to bring the chop saw in line with the table top.

b2ae7fea0157f4d8242fc0364f42811b.jpg

Then I was thinking about storage of the extension piece. I decided to weld some box iron to the bottom of the legs and it all managed to fit nicely. Delighted with it.
Must finish up welding the box iron and paint it all up. Getting there.

Thanks Saceone,

The Fall is a great show, Really like it.

Must admit that this has now somewhat turned into look at what I did 'When I get a chance' thread!!!

I'll get back to the main bench in a few weeks as i'll have a few weeks off from work and planning a few days on the farm working on the bench.

So much to do and so little time. It probably helps as I have time to figure out elements.

So you guys were right about the time consumed by the small fella. No more time for me. [emoji6]
Was in the shed and decided I needed to tidy the place up.
Didn't take a before but the afters are still not perfect.
Picked up some pallet racking to help with the process. Below is the current state:

@Richey, that looks like most of the farm sheds here in south africa! Most of the time the farmers know exactly where everything is and if you do a clean up he can't find a thing!!

Love your build thread and hope you get a chance to update soon:)

Awesome work.

Regards

@JC D4D and @1/2 Cup Thanks. I started cleaning out the shed as there was no room to manoeuvre. Hired a skip and proceeded to start culling items (followed by my older brother saying don't throw that away, we could use this for something etc. The end result is whats in the pictures. :)

I was time rich before and never knew it!!!!!

No updated on the bench other than I have been using it to construct some other stuff. I hope to get back to it in the new year.

I'd just like to wish everyone on here a Happy Christmas and a happy New Year. Many Happy returns to the community. xmas

So I've been quite for a while, another thread waiting to be started but before then.

This is not exactly the bench (or anything related to it!!) but I picked up a compressor and decided to give spray painting a go.
I have some pallet racking that looked worst for wear so as per the colour scheme some of it is going grey...

So this was the delivery.

Some chop saw action. Fingers crossed I measured it twice. [emoji4]

I quite enjoyed the 40x40 solid bar cutting. Like a knife through butter.

And this was 1/3 of the steel. Ready for its next journey.

The table is a brilliant build coming into its own here.

Well, where did those 6 months go.
Not a whole lot completed.

Some parts drilled out and tapped to size.

Most of us here have ADD so you're in good company. As for what it is, the front looks like an Isuzu trooper II but it could also be the Land cruiser II or may be even a Russian Lada or a Vaxhaul or something?

Hi Stioc,
Ding ding ding. Bang on. It’s a 1990 1st Generation Trooper (Bighorn). Not many left in Ireland so doing my best to save this beauty.
An Irschmer model too so it pretty rare.
My favorite picture of it.

Not many made in W. Germany parts you see anymore. [emoji848]

As for all the small parts. I’ll tease with a few more images before the reveal.
Hint: it turns barstock into tiny chips too. [emoji23]

Just marked out another few parts of this build last night.
Nothing worse than when you figure out you’re 170mm short of some 10x50mm barstock and you have to make a few choices on how to proceed. Oh well, another order of material to go into the local metal supply shop.

This is the before (don’t have the after complete yet)
Some drilling, Tapping and cutting to do.

A few more minutes and some cutting barstock. Most parts are made now so I’ll need to drill and tap and then start welding the hell outta it. I’ll let ye in on the build then. [emoji1305]

I apply what I call the 'beer factor' to projects.

For example....hanging drywall. You hang one or two sheets, then stand back and have a beer while you admire our results. Then go hang a couple more sheets...have a beer while you admire how good you are...then repeat until you are telling yourself you are the best drywall hanger in the world. That is when you know it's time to quite for the night before you ****** up any more sheets.

Of course, when using power tools that like to remove parts of your body....the beer waits until after the cutting is done.

So...what is the beer factor on this project?

And....are you actually in Ireland? My wife and daughter are going to be there next month. My daughter does Irish dancing...

BTW....nice work. Looking forward to the final result

And....are you actually in Ireland? My wife and daughter are going to be there next month. My daughter does Irish dancing...

BTW....nice work. Looking forward to the final result

I like the beer factor too but not while I’m making this or as you said dealing with power tools that might dismember me.
My beer factor will be +/- 1mm. (I wish!!)
Disgusted I snapped the blade. Put an end to tonight’s work. [emoji26]
Need to order a few more blades now.

I’m in Ireland alright, down in Cork (or as we pronounce it down here Cark!!!)

Is your daughter in a competition for the Irish dancing? Best of luck if she is.
Hopefully summer will arrive here for them on about the 11th July for about 7 hours before the misery returns. [emoji23]

Thanks for the kind words. Looking forward to showing ye the build

:lol_hitti:beer:

They fly over on the 22nd....a few days in England (my wife is English) then about 2 weeks in Ireland. First 7 days is a tour with some Irish dancing mixed in. Most of it around Dublin. My wife is an artist so she is spending 8 days in Kilrane, Rosslare Harbour, Co. Wexford, Rosslare, Ireland doing the Plein Air stuff.

Then back to England and home.

I lived in Scotland for 2 years and have made many trips to Belfast....

Class. Hopefully the weather does pick up here for June / July. Pretty dull this year so far and cold. We are paying for the 6 weeks of summer last year.
Wexford will be Beautiful. Sister lives there.
They have/ should go see Hook head lighthouse and loftus hall on a clear day. It’s picturesque.
Lots of nice villages around there.

I’m biased but Cork has all the best elements of Ireland in one county. [emoji23]

Edinburgh or Glasgow area. Love Scotland, pretty much the Irish with a different accent. [emoji38]

I'm adopted....no idea of what my history was.....until my wife got me a DNA test 2 years ago.

I'm 52% Celtic.....and my wife is only 25%...(her grandmother is Irish)

My x-***** was Scottish...met her there while I was in the AF. I must have a thing for Brit's....

Welcome back,
Wow, Where does the time go?
I popped over to my buddy Rob today. He featured earlier in this thread around the wood top construction.
Thanks for all the help today Rob. Pints will be had soon....

Got a few parts drilled, tapped and rounded thanks to him and his amazing workshop. Great days (few hours) work.

Drilled, tapped and Rounded. [emoji1303]

Some nice rounding done.

Hopefully this part doesn’t need to be remade. It should be the same distance top and bottom but I’ve got 7.21mm and 7.12mm. Fingers crossed the 0.9mm won’t affect it.

Next step is assembly with some melting of metal. Can’t wait. [emoji1303]
Till next time.

It’s been too long since I’ve updated this. Thanks to bob for the kick to get back on this.

I’m still working on this and had it all clamped you and ready to go and my welding helmet died.
Took almost 3 weeks to get a replacement with all this hoping on.
I’m back on track as of a few days ago so I can start sticking this together.
