I'm a 22yr old entry level mechanic. Recently I decided to move out of my small apartment in the city to a closer one from work. With the apartment I get a HUGE 2 door garage you could spaciously fit 6 cars. Sence I am moving out to my first place on my own, a lot of my furniture is lacking.

I'm considering getting Craftsman work benches for a desk, entertainment stand sence my current roomate had those things. Does anyone use these things? They are priced pretty well and the demo's at sears seem durable enough.

I'm interested in getting a 8ft bench with the backing that has the light and outlet for a desk. How well do the drawers hold up? Looking at a similar setup for a entertainment stand. :dunno:

Wouldnt a work bench be to high up to be used as a desk? They are made to be used while standing in front of them. Then I guess get a higher chair

It is your place and you are paying for it so do what you want and go for it.

My g.f. uses a 6 drawer stainless tool cart for her commercial grade mixer to sit on top of, attachments, recipes books and ect in drawers.

We use a counter height stainless steel restaurant prep table for our kitchen table with 5 counter height bar stools
My g.f. does a lot of baking she loves the setup, easy to sterilize the table top then use it as a work surface.

There are adjustable height workbenches, so desk height isn't impossible.

In fact, I just built one recently where the minimum leg height was set at 30".

You wouldn't believe my BP when I first got off on my own. all medieval and wrought iron everywhere. (I once had a broad sword fall off the wall from playing music too loud...)

As said, it's your place.

Ikea sells great stainless steel table tops. I just used then to make inspection tables for the lab I work in. Very good deal, $130 for a 59 x 29 tables top.

You'll score a lot of man points, but you probably won't get laid there much.

We all have our own priorities!

FWIW - In my early 20's I would have done it - by my late 20's I wouldn't.

My g.f. wanted one of those tops so she asked me to go check it out in the store with her.
Particle-board backed **** with stainless wrapped around it
They don't even use an adhesive on it so the entire stainless top just lifts and bounces off the particle board backing.

If you do happen to get any tail I would imagine it wouldn't be the quality that you would want your friends to see.

I suggest you learn to compartmentalize life. When I leave work, I leave it at work, when I come in from the garage I leave the garage in the garage, when I leave home to go to work I leave home at home.

My house is full of jet engine parts for decoration. Still haven't met a chick that digs it :-/. The day I do I'll know she's the one.

Yea, I have to agree...when I had my first BP, it was a decorating nightmare...moose head with a lei and ski goggles. Cool to me? Yep. Cool to the ladies? Nope! Ditched that setup quick and got a girl (literally just a friend) to help me freshen up the place and things went much better after that.:rocker:

You're a young guy that works on vehicles. Any girl you date will know that. You're also single, employed and have your own place.

If a girl gets put off by a craftsman bench for a desk you need to put a foot in her *** and find a better one.

It's your place do what you want and enjoy it.

Most chicks won't even know what the stuff is actually intended for.

While dating 2 of the most important things I noticed that mattered to chicks was a nice comfy attractive couch to sit and watch t.v. or mess around on.
And having an actual dinner table that the both of you can eat dinner together on..

I once used that to get a girl into bed. "Oh please come help me decorate my apartment so I can be a "real adult". I bought $50 worth of **** from various stores... Had her help me place these things around my place and then I took her to the new at the time twilight movie.... We were both around 23 at the time.... Needless to say my plan was successful. Lol

So in your line of thinking any girl you date knows you work with your hands and get dirty so why bother with a nail brush? No need to take a shower cuz you're going to get dirty again anyway.

My girl always liked that not only could I fix things but that I had some pride in my personal appearance and in my home.

I say go for it. If you get serious with a girl she'll have no problem telling you to change it to her liking.

On a completely different note, I was the last person in the world to have a water bed. Trying to **** in a water bed was awful, but there were a lot of chicks who wanted to find that out for themselves

I've got a new Snap-On toolbox in the back bedroom (it's not used as a bedroom) & that's my "bar". All my liquor bottles are on top of it. So far, everybody that's been here thinks it's cool.
If you are a single guy & you work on cars... & you get a girl that can't understand /won't tolerate that you have things that you like / things related to what you do in your own house..... Kick that ***** to the curb ASAP.
She's going to be nothing but headaches & a bossy *****.
(let her know that you probably don't plan on keeping it that way forever... it just works for you now.)

Heck, my next computer/work desk is going to be an 8' version of this with a 2x4/ply hutch-book shelf. My wife is totally cool with it. I might end up putting another length of desktop down the side wall while I am at it. Point being, find a girl willing to let you be you, and give her room to be herself too.

Sounds to me that you are proud of being a wrench head. And you should be!

Mike, I grew up in farm country in Upstate NY and some of the hottest women you will EVER meet are not afraid to throw on a pair of boots and get their hands dirty. My woman is THAT 5' 3" smokin' redhead with a rack as big as your head and she has drudged through many basements with me holding the flashlight. When she is with me, that customer ABSOFUCKINLUTELY remembers who to call the next time he has a problem! Works a helluva lot better than leaving a sticker on the boiler or the panel!

Married 13 years and my wife kind of likes the garage/industrial look around the apartment. She likes to cook and plus she has nice little desert business on the side. She learned early on that a tool roll cab is a very efficient use of space for her cooking gadgets.
My neighbor from Ecuador uses an array of snap on tool boxes for the entertainment center he has.

IMHO you should do what makes you happy. If you want a ridiculously awesome mancave, then make it happen. If you want a more grown up feeling place that you think someone else will like, then do it and the hell with anyone else!

My computer desk is very similar! In college I made a 8 foot dinner/study/beer pong table out of 4x4 legs, 2x4 frame and 4 2x12x8 boards. It was the only piece of furniture I saved when I left Orlando last year. When I got it home, I shortened it by taking out one 2x12 (only 3 wide now). I re purposed the board and made a shelf that sits in the back of the desk behind my comp screen.

The place I'm moving into is a 2 bed room with sun room office. I have really nice bedroom wood furniture that was handed down to me and a Jack Daniels bar with a couple stools I eat off of. And a set of leather couches.

My thinking is that if I get the Craftsman benches, they have good resale value, they can be broken down and moved easy, and if I ever feel the need to accommodate a womens taste I can just move them into my work space.

It's gonna be a BP though no doubt, between the spare room with billiard table, the JD bar, and harley and Budweiser loot I have and the leather couches I have no plans for a wife or kids untill my race car is done and my tool box is full of chrome.

I have read a lot of mixed reviews on the benches. Some really good and some really bad. I want to get the stainless top for the one I'll use as my desk. Mainly because I'll be handling car parts on it and still want to be able to write on it. But I also fix computers as a hobby and handle a lot of circuitry.

For most, the natural progression in life is to find a significant other and settle down. As the bachelor phase goes, you get to furnish as you wish however, the further you deviate from the natural progression, the sooner that temp to perm significant other will attempt to change your ways. If you're prepared for that step, it's a non-issue, do the man thing and go for it. I look back with fond memories and am glad I did. If you're going to grow accustomed to a man cave and change for you is difficult, you may want to stay a little more neutral and restrict the man-space to the garage/shop area where it's safe from the rules of the living space. My wife is extremely understanding and supportive of "the" space but only because the boundaries are strictly defined. Not to say, from time to time, I don't end up taking over the kitchen counter...

We've got a very small kitchen and Craftsman stools have been our "dining chairs" for years now. As stated, no one would even know what they are but for the big "CRAFTSMAN" logo on them. It's an unconventional setup, but for just the wife and I and occasional parties it's great.

I'm ok with anything somebody wants for furniture, but it was a LONG time before I was buying anything new, in hard furniture, nothing stuffed used unless I knew the source.

Make it work and be comfortable cheap, spend your money on fun.

I'm personally not impressed with c'man workbenches as workbenches, so I'd imagine their even worse as desks. But I wouldn't hesitate to use a bench as a desk if I though down the road I'd like to use it for its intense purpose.

There's a time and a place for everything...

Tools and workbenches are for the garage. Furnature and decor is for the apartement. Here's the thing...girls love it when you can fix their car (my hero!), and then have them over for dinner at your nice place. If your place is nice enough that her friends will come over and hang out before a night on the town...you're in! Besides that, making points with the friends keeps you in good graces with the ladies...that's never a bad thing...women talk.
