I built the one in the first link above more than 10 years and it is still doing the job. The caps and diagrams were built as listed and it balanced out great.

There are also quite a few threads on here for your subject, you'll have to do a search. Do you have specific questions?

For anything under 5HP I would highly recommend a VFD rather than a "phase converter" static or rotary, much less pain in the ***, and lots of nice features that can be done with modern day electronics.

VFD word of warning.
if you run the output of the VFD to a machine, you must go directly to the motor. You can not use any switches or interrupts (starters, heaters, relays) in line. Interrupting the power will toast the output IGFET/ MOSFET/ transisitors.
You have to hook up your forward / reverse to the terminal strip of the VFD.

BTW, its VFD, your fingers got out of sequence there.......

Well I used to be a member on P.M. a long time ago but it got so bad that you couldn't even post something without it being deleted because they would say it was posted in the wrong place etc. etc. There's so many categories you don't know where to put something. I said screw it. it's a bunch of B.S. if you ask me, & more moderators that think they're God, I could go on & on.

This. The VFD requires programming and wiring your motor controls to a terminal strip. once you get it figured out, it's the way to go for small machines. I use a 2HP model on my 1HP 3 phase mill/drill. I have it programmed to stop the spindle .2 seconds after hitting the E-Stop. Can't do that with a static converter. Have a big bit yank something out of the vise, smack the E-Stop and the excitement is over.
