Is there a vise considerd the BIIGGEST?

For those with a good memory, I have a king wilton. While it is a monster, I see reeds and athols just as big. The big ridgid that Lump posted a week or so just makes me drool. So is there a holy grail of the giant vises, the biggest of the biggest, or is just a wash between the biggies. I know this can be highly sujective, one vise may weigh the most, but another may have wider jaws.

I don't know the answer, but here are a few of the bigger ones.

1930's era Rock Island 8 1/3" at 345 lb
1930's era Reed 209 at 327 lbs. I don't know if the 209 carried over into the 1940s when they changed the design, but the new 208s were heavier than the old.
Hollands 8" at 325 lbs (Demoman has one)
The Columbian and Prentiss 8" & 8 1/2" chipping vises had an optional swivel that could be added to the bottom. That would bump them into the 300+ lb range.
There was a Parker 808(?) at 299 lbs with a stationary base. I don't know if there was a swivel version.
Atlas 8 3/8" chipping vise at 345 lbs
1950's Athol 628 at 303 lbs

The link in Monte's post above shows the 700 lb Pittsburg vise, although I suppose that's not really a bench vise. Are you talking about bench type vises?

Not really. Usually I just know that I've seen a vise someplace and it bugs me so I dig and see if i can find it again.

There is a guy on Philly craigslist selling a Holland 28 vise that he states weighs 332 pounds. Asking $1800 for it.

Ok call me curious sure we all want a large vise but I got to tell you boys when you start talking about 200 pounds and over that would kill me just thinking about mounting it to a table.

So I got to ask what the heck you guys are working on that you need a vise that weighs over 300lbs. a spce ship? Is this a man cave thing hey I got the biggest MF vise in the city type of quest...

So I got to ask what the heck you guys are working on that you need a vise that weighs over 300lbs. a spce ship? Is this a man cave thing hey I got the biggest MF vise in the city type of quest...

woody- for years and years I worked with a POS vise... thing must have 3" jaws and I hated using it every time. I always swore up and down that one day I would have a big vise. A couple years ago around Easter time Kirbot posted a Reed with 6" jaws. The thing must weigh around 200 lbs! It took two of us to load it in my car.... On the way home I had to stop short and the vise rolled onto my cell phone charger and destroyed it! Once I got it home i used an engine hoist to get it outta my car and onto my bench. Its been on my bench for a year or two now... Biggest issue now is the top of the table flexs due to the fact that I dont have a THICK steel top. Search through the threads I started and you'll come across a thread called "the never ending work bench build."

A vise that size should not be mounted to a table or bench. Instead, mount it to a floor pedestal about waist height. That way a person can beat something apart with a hand sledge at a comfortable height.

To me, having a monster is more about the look then anything. It is nice having a vise that opens up a foot bolted to bench with a 1" thick steel toop with legs made out of 4x4 steel stock bolted to the floor when you need it. Still I find myself using my inferrior 6" import wilton more for everyday stuff. For a lot of things, it is really overkill and unhandy. Doing field service I get into some really cool industail shops that have moster vises. Clamping smaller stuff in them is kinda ockward.
