I generally buy most of my bulk SAE fasteners from Tractor Supply, but they carry very few metric fasteners. Does anyone know of an inexpensive source for bulk metric fasteners (bolts, machine screws, nuts, etc.)?

Are there any industrial suppliers around you? Most of them are cheaper than buying at box stores, and you generally get much better quality.

The nearest industrial supplier to me is actually quite pricey! I agree the box stores like Lowes and HD are way overpriced for small quantities of miscellaneous metric fastners, but for SAE fasteners TSC is pretty cheap .... Grade 2 bolts/nuts/washers are $1.99/lb.

I don't use large quantities of metric stuff, but I like to keep a wide variety (though not necessarily a large quantity of any one size) of fasteners on hand for the miscellaneous repairs that always seem to come along.

That makes sense, typically the industrial suppliers I deal with don't even stock grade 2 hardware. What grade of Metric are you looking for?

Depending on just exactly what you want (including the quantity) You can sometimes find good deals on eBay. A few years ago, I bought a bunch of nuts (coarse and fine) and washer (minimum quantity of each size was 50) from a place that had free shipping on a $50+ order.

I'm spoiled. There is a real fastener store about 5 miles down the road. I buy lots of small quantity (5 -10) stainless fasteners.

Why not auction it off? You'd potentially be able to get more for it that way than scrap I'd think.

The original purchaser of the inventory is low key and our strict orders were to scrap. I have pleaded with them to allow some sort of salvage company to come in. So far no go. I also came across a pallet of underbench draws still in the box. Working that one hard for you guys honest!

Wonder why they're so set on the scrap route?

If it were heavily rusted or otherwise damaged, defective, ..., it would make sense to me, but if it's in new to really good shape, it seems a waste IMO.

You can't get any cheaper than that. Someone needs to make a roadtrip:eyecrazy:

Do you have an ACE hardware store around you?

A lot of them will have an entire fastener aisle.
I believe that inventory is on consignment.

1's and 2's are expensive but I have bought box quantities at a discount.
If you need more they may be open to talking.

+1 on Ace...I know they are expensive, when you have one or two pieces, but they sell 'by the box' too. Go to the counter and ask for a quote for larger quantities. They will call their supplier right then and print out a quote for you.

If you are anywhere near Sacramento, CA, check out Blue Collar Supply. I haven't looked for metric, but they have fabulous 'by the pound' prices on fasteners.

Midwest Fastener has the best selection and customer service for my needs. Miles ahead of competitors like Hillman.

Next time you go to the junkyard, just fill up your pockets! I do save all the fasteners when removing a part or if I remove some from a project.

I agree that a bulk supply like Tractor Supply where you pay by the pound is very convenient.

There is a bolt shop on the other side town that is only open from 8 to 5 on week days that I get stuff from if the big box stores don't have it. There is a fastinall store here I think. Never been in there though.

IF your looking for Metric motorcycle OEM replacement. Bolt Kits are a great deal. I have a large one for my KTM. Has a lot of the little parts I usually looking for. It's already in the garage and no trip the shop.

They also have them in smaller sizes. They even hex head flanged ones... .

How do you define your bulk needs?

10 of each fastener size for 25 different sizes or 100 to 200 of each fastener for 5 different sizes?

Most local industrial suppliers will set you up with an account or will allow you to order and prepay and then call upon delivery if the order is big enuff. But then you are looking for at least 50 of every size and more for M6 and below.

Again, bags of 5 and 10 bolts in lots of various sizes is NOT how the bulk buying system works. That's what hdwre and the Hillman fastner bins are for. Hell, you can order in bulk from Hillman via your dealer and just ask for the knocked down price.

Then you have to factor in grade and finish. Then you have std thread and fine thread.

It's not like buying cashews , peanuts and pistascios at Costco sadly. More like buying coffee in bulk.

That's how I've gotten by for quite a while. Every time I was there, grabbed all of the nuts & bolts laying on the ground from people snagging parts that they just left there. Have a big toolbox full of metrics that saved my *** on more than one project gone wrong.

But it would be nice to store up 5 of each size and type, like you can do at TSC.

Yeah, maybe I should define what I call "bulk" a little better. I try to keep roughly 25 or so of each size SAE fastener .... different sizes, different thread, different grade. Since I only do "hobby" work I don't turn over my stock of fasteners very quickly ... mostly repair work, farm work, tractor restoration, some car work etc., but all for hobby or just personal need. So, when I start to get low on some sizes, I buy "bulk" at TSC, I grab an empty bag and fill it with fist fulls of like-grade stuff from the open bins. Since they sell by the pound, size or type of fastener (bolt vs. nut vs. washer) doesn't matter ... only grade. Obviously, price per pound increases with grade. When I get home I sort them all out and stock to my fastener bins.

Unfortunately, TSC doesn't stock metric fasteners in open bins. They sell metric on a per unit basis and that gets costly. My ideal would be for TSC to start stocking metric in open bins and sell by the pound just as they do SAE. It seems to me there are enough metric based vehicles, tractors, and machines that this could be a viable market item for TSC.

mcmaster-Carr is the best place if you can wait 48 hours for it. Locally here in Sacramento we use BlueCollarSupply or Emigh's Hardware. Many Ace Hardware stores have a pretty good selection. Emigh has a whole hardware room of different sizes, hardness and materials - brass, 8.8, 10.9, 12.9 and Stainless etc
