Is there any value to broken Snap On tools

Have a bunch of broken Snap On that I've picked up with other stuff along the way. Bunch of ratchets, some sockets, hammers, etc. Any value to this stuff as it can likely be replaced by a Snap On dealer at no charge (I don't have a Snap On dealer or would do it myself). Most of the ratchets just need internals. I guess I could order parts kits for those. Some are actually broken. Thoughts? Thanks.

Yeah, I got that. I'm more concerned about the stuff that is actually broken. For example I have a FHLF936A flex head ratchet that is actually broken where handle attaches to the ratchet head. Or sockets that are cracked, etc.

If you just need new internals for ratchets, no problem, you can order these no problem, even if it's an old model!

You can get replacement handles for hammers too! (You're going some if you can 'wear out' the head)!

As for the rest, and whether you can warranty it, bear in mind that the 'lifetime warranty' only applies to the original owner! Bear in mind also, that it only applies to tools or parts that were 'defective'! If something is simply worn out - thst doesn't entitle you to a replacement!

A lot of folks don't interpret things that way, but that's the deal offerred!

I was delighted to be able to even obtain a rebuild kit for a ratchet of my Dad's, and didn't mind paying the price charged!

If price plus kit is less than potential resale the ratchets are the gold in the lot.

As for the rest it seems to depend on the good person in CS or a bulletproof relation with a driver.

As Dave said worn out is just that and can be refused. It may be time to just scrap some stuff.

I had a 720 series ratchet I didn't fall in love with. For even crusty old stuff it held decent resale. I had trouble selling the loose wrenches for much more than other decent brands, so those all just go to my boss at cost.

Nothing special if its just a pile of odd stragglers. Sets seem to hold better value.

It's unlikely a dealer, that you have no business relationship with, will replace anything. (maybe one item)

SO corp. will usually replace 1-2 items as a courtesy but after that they'll require proof of purchase and/or tell you to contact a dealer.

Pick the top 1-2 "broken" items and try getting replacements thru corp. Make sure they're broken and not rusty or worn out. Put the rest on Ebay. There's some value in broken SO tools.

Thanks guys, yeah I get the whole relationship thing. I bought Snap On religiously off the truck for about 8 years while I was in college and working part time installing auto electronics but that was 30 years ago. Have been buying both new and used ever since!

I'll probably just fix the ones that need new internals. The only one that might be worth anything that is actually broken is the FHLF936A and I'd even be willing to buy a new handle if they sell it. As for the sockets and other stuff, probably not worth the effort.

This is all extra stuff I will probably sell or toss.

I've tried to warranty a couple of things with Snap On Customer Service. One time the CR rep sent me a $10 repair part free of charge. The other time the rep on the phone told me to warranty it thru my driver or show proof of purchase for mail-in replacement.

It seems to me that their warranty policy has really got strict from all the years that people sent in broken tools from yard sales and then flipped the new replacements for mass profit.

Just call Snap On Customer Service and they will take care of you assuming you bought the tools from Snap On truck/trucks. I would say Snap On and Mac Tools have the best customer service. I would rate SO a little higher because the shipping is on them. But Mac Tools is a little quicker and sends the warrantied items via 2nd UPS. They both are great.

As a driver, I don't have a regular Snappy driver any more. We have several large shops scattered around the country. I can stop by one of our shops, and usually one of out techs will swap an individual item out. It's rare that I have any tools to warranty with Snappy.

Odd. I've gone to many trucks and had stuff fixed or replaced no questions asked.

Never had a single problem. Been buying Snap-on for 20 years. Most I've bought new on the truck but I have some stuff I've bought used or on Ebay.

I think as long as you have a dealer that you do business with regularly, occasional warranty replacement would never be an issue. At least that has been the case with the 5 or 6 dealers I've dealt with over the years.

Now I have been on the truck several times when someone unaffiliated with my shop has popped his head in, introduced himself and inquired about purchasing or warranting tools. Every time the dealer seemed open to the off the street walk-in customer and was happy to furnish his contact info and sometimes a flyer or catalog.

Key may be "bunch" and the sort of condition vs damage. I'd try customer service for some, then talk to any local shops to find out when the truck visits and try to blend in.

OTOH just ebay anything with more trouble that gain.

Ok, been doing a little research. Snap On sells kits for the F*936 for about $10 each so I can repair the two FL936s below for about $20. No brainer. Now the FH936A is missing all of the internals, the cover plate and the handle. Internals $10, Cover plate $8 (or use the one from the broken FHLF936A). Snap on sells a replacement soft grip handle for about $12... does anybody know if this replacement part will be a direct fit to the "stub" on the FH936A or am I missing other parts? It would be about $30 to fix that one if the grip replacement is all that I need. Again, a no brainer.

That leaves the 1/4 drive TMB830 and 3/8 drive F749. Wasn't able to track these numbers down on Snap on's website so I will have to call or find a local driver. All that is needed are new kits, which I'm assuming are cheap (about $10 each).

The 1/2 drive on end is actually a MAC but I'm assuming I can get a kit for that one too.

The FHLF936A has a broken handle. Snap on site lists a "FLEX JOINT REPAIR KIT" part number RKRF841JT but it is only $10.30. Does anybody know if this is the actual handle (metal part) or something else? If it is the handle, I guess I just need a repair kit, the flex joint repair kit and a new soft grip, about $32 and another no brainer...

Here are the broken ratchets:

For what you have left and the sockets too just call the customer service number. Seriously. Just tell them you don't work in a shop any more and you have some old stuff that is broken. They will likely replace all of it or send the kits.

As for the hammer handle, I broke my handle on my SO hammer. I expected them to put a new handle on it but they replaced the whole thing. Screw drivers I got my old handles with new drivers in them.

The hammer is an older brass deadblow. The whole handle is cracked. I had replaced another one similar to this about 2 years ago. Just walked on to a truck I had seen at an auto body shop and driver replaced it no questions. I had originally bought the hammer in the 1980s. Driver said it was a common failure from that time frame. The handles just dry out and shatter.

I just took a closer look at the FH936A body. The handle appears to have been broken off and it was ground down a bit so replacement handle won't work. I was thinking it was too short for just a soft grip replacement, LOL. Looks like that one's toast.

So I called Snap On to order parts kits for the two FL936s and the F749. I inquired about buying a new handle for the FHLF936A but it's not available. To my surprise the lovely gal on other end said they would be sending me out the three new kits and a new FHLF80A under warranty. Not even charging me for shipping. Asked where do I send the broken ratchet and she said there was no need to return it. She made my day!

BIG THUMBS UP TO SNAP ON! THANK YOU!!!!

I look at it like this and don't care who's **** it hurts what difference does it make if you warranty a broken tool you didn't buy new from a dealer, what's the difference if you replace it or original owner it's still someone replacing a tool that has/had a warranty for life. It's so stupid a person is a person if snap on doesn't want to warranty something for that reason it's plum retarded they, are just trying to be greedy. You know they will warranty a tool say if you had inherited it from your father or grandfathers they still count that as original owner. What if it was your step parents? I warranty snap on tools even if I got it used my snap on guy don't care where I got it or how I broke it even.
Just warranty the stuff little buts at a time by calling them and getting a shipping label and send them in and get new or sell them on eBay people would rather buy a broken tool than a worn out ugly buy still working one so they can warranty it and get brand new. I've dealt with snap on by phone and they have been great and don't even ask where I got the tool. Technically snap on puts in warranty in the price say just in case a person has to replace a tool once and they sell a lot of tools and most never break so they make a killing with the mark up on tools they are a billion dollar company. I see nothing wrong with warranting a used preowned tool and I will not argue with anyone over it if they want to throw away a broken preowned tool go ahead but it's dumb IMO.
Pm me as I might buy some things from you I'd be interested in knowing what you got and have a bunch of rebuild kits for older ratchets.

Hey, I'm a Snap On fanboy, LOL. Been buying since 1982 and I'm not even a professional wrench. Love them. That said, I have a fair number of broken Snap On tools. Just like every other brand. Steel is steel, for the most part.
