I'm not real familiar with that size of stuff, but I honestly don't think the price is that bad for a new USA made, 1.5" DRIVE, 3.625" impact socket. That is one big honking socket. I dare you to look up the snap on equiv.

$445... actually not as much as I was expecting. I'm disappointed I didn't see the huge sockets in the IR clearance when I placed an order, I want one for a pen holder.

Imagine trying to lift that socket one handed and how much steel it must take to even make it.

Probably used on large ship engines and bridgebuilding.

Biggest socket I ever saw was a 6" but it was being used as a doorstop. :D

Yeah, I guess not. I just was surprised...I bet even my 5HP 80 gal would have a hard time keeping up w/ a 1.5" impact lol!

What's the practicality? Shipbuilding?

I'm sure my compressor wouldn't keep up either. This single impact socket is in the neighborhood of $$$ 3k :shocking: At over 86 pounds I'm glad I don't have the job of using it all day or the gun that drives it. At the end of the day my wife would be **** out of luck if she wanted any.. :)

I am guessing that is not an impact socket but rather just not chromed. I would bet that you would use hydraulic tightening equipment with that.

It's easier to google the brand and PN to see affirmation of it being an impact socket than it is to use hydraulic tightening equipment on an impact socket.

Or so I hear.

Speaking of Cripe's eBay listings, when will they get their website back up?

Holy cannoli! What needs an 8-inch socket? The engine room of the Titanic?

My sister's father in law has a military truck made in 1919 by FWD. Its wheels are held on by one axle nut each. But even those are only about 4 or 5 inches.

Wow

It doesn't look that badass in the ebay picture. I wish they had something for a size reference

I agree.

I think it might be impact. Few men could turn that all day :bounce:

Yikes...

You gotta wonder just how many of those Snap-On sells in a year.

Not many I bet!

These types of sockets are used all over from electric plants, refineries, smelters, foundries, cement plants, ship building and so on. Much of what is used in the industrial world is seldom seen or known to the general public. Some of the electric companies high voltage trucks fully outfitted with four by four and all cost about 400000 to 500000 that's including it fully tooled and with inventory. A job machine shop run by a friend has sockets that go all the way up to 3 inches, and he says he doesn't even touch heavy industry items.

At work we use a hydraulic ratchet that works with hardware that big. The name of the machine we use is HYTORC, actually very easy to use just have to position the "stop" right. We've actually gotten away from regular 6 point nuts and gone to what's called a SUPERBOLT. Its amazing how tight a 3/8 ratchet set will get something. :3gears:

Not surprising the cost............ A farmer friend several yrs ago purchased a LARGE impact socket and spent a lot of $$$$$$$$ on it! I don't recall if it was for one of his ole combines, or possible steam engines!!!!

My dad was a millwright at a paper mill for 37 years...has most sockets up to 3.5" and a couple larger ones...want to say he's got a 3-7/8 and possibly a 3-5/8"....not as "Rare" as a person might think. To an automotive guy, yeah its huge, but over in the industrial world things are to a different scale. Things are big and downtime costs are measured in hundreds of thousands of dollars a minute.

Past 3/4" drive torque multipliers are your friend if your using it on a regular basis. You can take 2" Nuts off with a standard length 1/2" Drive ratchet.

Have a link in the torque multiplier things Dave?

Sure do...many more MFG's and models of them. Heres a 1/2" Input, 1" Output, 3200 ft/lbs. Accurate enough to use a torque wrench on it as well.
As you can see by the specs...173 ft/lbs input gets you 3200 on the output...

I believe HF has a "small model" advertised for automotive lug nuts..even your wife could take the lugs off of a 3/4 ton truck. one of my friends was a heavy truck mechanic and he had a "medium sized" multiplier basically designed solely for OTR truck lug nuts. Could pop off a truck wheel in 10 mins without breaking a sweat using only the multiplier and the small crank handle it came with.
