Is this compressor worth the hassle?

I picked this compressor from a buddy for a case of beer. Everything appears to be in good physical condition. The only issue is that the compressor itself only pumps on one side. I can put my hand over the outlet and spin it over, the one stroke will blow my hand right off. Spin it over more, nothing at all comes out on the second stroke. I figure the tank alone is worth it for what I paid. Is it worth my time to pull the compressor apart? Or just buy a new one and be done with it?

Let's see some details on the pump. Tank and motor won't help us decide if the pump is worth a rebuild. Odds are if it pumps on one side and not on the other, it's probably just a valve job needed. So depending on the brand, it may be simple and relatively inexpensive or could be a hard to find item.

Compressors have check valves of some sort or the other. If you are handy, pull the head off the side not pumping and see is a valve is broken or something stuck in it.

Also see if you can get a break down with part numbers and if parts are still available. Likely that pump is pricey if it is quality and should be repairable by you or a shop.

It is in fact a Campbell Housefeld CI100000P pump. Rated for up to 10HP. Pull the heads and check the valves and go from there. May be an easy fix.

Will pull the heads tomorrow and report back. Not sure what exactly I'm looking for, unless of course something jumps right out at me. Auto mechanic by trade so I'm sure I can hack my way through it. I've never messed with compressors before though. Will be interesting to see the inner workings and maybe learn a thing or 2 [emoji106] thanks for all the replies and help

Yup. I came here to say CH as well. That crankcase pressure vent is a dead giveaway.

And was it worth it, HECK YEAH! Just for the 7.5HP single-phase motor alone. Look up one of those babies and see what it costs new.

Oh, by any chance did your buddy give you the motor starter as well? If not, the followup question is: does he know where it is and can he still get it?

$2700 compressor (10 hp). So yeah a hell of a deal. Could just need a new valve plate. These pumps are reed valves. Very simple, parts available. If you need a valve plate there is an outside chance I may have some parts available from a CH pump I was going to rebuild but I may be abandoning.

SWEET!! Yup - that's the one! The good NEMA American-made one, not the IEC-spec Chinesium one.

Drain oil and take off inspection plate to check for any metal shavings in crankcase or any rod, crank, or cylinder damage.

Wow, my first ever "you ****" on the GJ! Thanks for all the help guys, I figured it was worth some money, but had several people telling me not to waste my time. Thanks for the reassurance, I will update this thread as I complete the tear down.

Yup, not all cheap broke stuff is a deal but this is worth a fixer upper for sure. Would run 2 men in a body shop.
