This is cool... an old Shell branded antifreeze and battery tester refractometer. It was in the Proto box from yesterday. There are only two just like it active on bay right now.

I tested it with a drop of water and it is very accurate. It showed the antifreeze was protected to exactly 32 degrees.

I'm not sure how old it is, but the literature has no zip code on the address listed at the bottom of the instruction page.

Doesn't the lack of a zip code put the tool right around the early 1960's?

I didn't get a chance to go out early this morning due to lack of decent sales, sleeping in, excellent coffee and general laziness.

After a stint of fooling around the in the garage, i got a phone call from a person i contacted a number of weeks ago off Craigslist. Since i was already going to be nearby, i said i would stop by.

The only thing i can remember from the ad was a bucket of tools and a small box with some sockets. No idea why i was intrigued by the ad.

I finally arrive and almost instantly see what i saw many weeks ago.

Lots of huge Plomb wrenches!!!


THe lot includes:

1246 Combo wrench
1228 DOE wrench
3440 Combo wrench
3062 DOE wrench
4700 1/4" offset speeder
54xx 1/2" drive sockets

The single Plomb DBE has been ground off by either the factory or owner but its still very much a plomb wrench.

The Wright ratchet is 3/4" and i also found 3 old Snap on sockets. 2 date to 1939 while the smaller of the 3 has a club shaped date stamp which means 1932. Its one of the best looking sockets i've seen from that long ago.

She threw in the Ridgid pipe cutter since she didn't have any change. Its nearly new with a sharp cutter wheel and decal intact. Not bad for 40.00

The Jointer is a 37-290 Deluxe 4" Model, the motor is a 1/2hp Rockwell, I like that it still has the chip chute, stand and check out the switch extension on the motor! It appears complete and spins freely.

That is a cool Craftsman, I have a 3 drawer similar but not as deep, same corner protectors but has a door cover more like his Proto.

Went to drop off some old tv's and chairs to a Bargain store friend and this was looking lonely and sad amongst all the HH furnishings and toys so I brought it home.

I have a similar Craftsman unit I bought at auction 20yrs ago for $75 back then. It's buried in a storage unit right now, or I'd post a pic to compare. I can't even get to the model # to check a date. Maybe someday I'll get a chance to drag it out and post it.

It was a nice little machine, but I could never get it tuned right. No matter what I did, it always left a scallop at the end of the board. I spent weeks tuning it and still had the same results.

I can't wait to see your resto on the Delta/Rockwell. It's gonna be sweet.

I found replacements on Grainger, but mine only have light indentations that cleaned up with a flat file

Hi Jakemac, that is called "snipe" and is almost always present to some degree. The main way to minimize it (once your machine is set up correctly) is thru your technique handling the board. There is a very specific technique to produce the best results. The other thing to keep in mind is that planing and jointing are sizing operations, and are done to your stock before cutting to finished lengths. Just size your rough pieces to put the snipe in the part you will cut away when cutting your pieces to size.

My dad built dozens of feet of cabinets and bookshelves, beds, and other furniture with a jointer of the same vintage. It can be a very capable and useful machine.

Tore a tendon in my bicep, so as soon as the surgeon gets done in my arm, I'll be on light duty for a few months. Shouldn't slow the hunt TOO much, but it will definitely push any projects requiring 2 good arms off into next year. I've got about 5 days to get as much done as possible before my arm is immobilized for 2 weeks......... so I better get crackin'!!

Only able to make one stop today. It advertised "unusual tools" and fishing gear. He said by the time I got there people had taken most of the fishing stuff but no one showed interested in the tools. I was able to pick up everything in the pictures for $40.

Pictures are deceiving. The top two extensions are Craftsman, first one is a 3/4" x 6" and the second one is a 1/2" x 20". The rest is Snap On, the long nose pliers are 11.5", ratchets are 3/8", breaker bar is a 1/2" x 24".

I spied the name plate in a box of garbage tools. Very surprised to see it in there. Now to find out what type of belts are out there for any of my uses. Hope they are not that hard to find. The factory is not too far from my house so I may stop in there some day.

Yeah I guess "Decent" isn't the correct term. In general it has been a poor garage sale summer so that probably tempered my excitement. Got lucky today for sure with a girl moving to Georgia and just getting rid of stuff..........huh that didn't exactly come out right but you get the drift.

Also what you don't see his all the misses before getting lucky today. A lot of misses lately compared to hits and the hits have been coming from unlikely sales typically. You just never know

Not a garage sale find, but it was on C-List. The ad was for a workbench. The PO said he had gotten it from a machine shop. Nothing too special but the legs were splayed and they would look great under the section of bowling lane I plan to repurpose as a workbench. As I'm disassembling and cleaning up the legs, I spy a plate. Hmm, a little cleanup reveals a "Holley Carburetor Co." plate. I thought that was pretty cool! A little additional provenance as to where those legs/bench had been! Not bad for a $20 bill.

Two garage sales today - no tools at all, but I did get a couple neat items.

Few repairs/shop books. One is general car repair, not a big deal but it was free. The other two are the prizes at $7 for the pair: one is Audel's Carpenter's and Builder's Library issue on Tools, Steel Square and Joinery, c.1968. The other is pretty neat too - Machine Shop Practice by Harry Jones, c.1926. Lots of great info in each of these two books.

Couple hole punches, both metal. One is big and orange, 3-hole, made by Velos in England. Other is 2-hole, an Acco No. 10, probably circa 1960s or so. $2 for the pair.

Last was a metal file card box with a pile of keys in it. All sorts of keys, for locks, cars, house deadbolts, post office boxes, suitcases, computers, etc. Hundreds of them. And not a lock in sight. All for $1.
