They want several million dollars, they didn't even know exactly who owned it until someone sued over the Banksy mural that was removed from it. Not much of anything in it (or any of the other buildings that every can get into). Couple years back a couple of people pushed an old heavy duty truck out of the third floor.

According to a book i recently read, thats friday night entertainment for the youths of Detroit. Along with lighting abandoned homes on fire and other general destruction. :dunno:

There is some cool stuff in that city and its sad to see what has happened to it. If you want to read a good book, i can give you the name of it.

Stopped at an Estate sale on Friday that was books, Probably 100k books (house of a former used book dealer) and picked up some really good vintage hunting books, a really nice book on the steel square, and an early machining practices book. On Sat, hit an Estate sale in a small town just south, picked up a knife sharpener, woody screwdriver, pouch for Craftsman punches (filled it with my spares, now goes in my "go help a friend" bag,) vintage snap ring pliers and a pair of duck billed Krauters that that got shortend. All that for $3. This was the 3rd day of that sale, and it looks like it was a good one on the first day, sorry I missed it.
Next was the Skockton swapmeet, always a good one. Picked up the Millers Falls chisels for $10, totally unused and USA made! Picked up some misc - Proto driver, Plvmb 8-point socket, long screw starter, a hammer handle, vintage square (not sure of the maker) and a Challenger 1/4" rat, all for $.50 or $1.
Then hit a few garage sales in the area, picking up the SK DBE (metric), Proto LA swivel socket and Starrett screwdriver. $2. One last sale, got a rusty Proto LA long screw driver, and, wait for it, a 16oz brass hammer, made by Snap On. $5 for the pair.
Not too bad a weekend.

There were, and also a few of Bartle Bull's books on Safari, but the sale ended yesterday, and the woman who ran it will have the house cleaned out buy the end of the sale. Sorry.

Capsticks books are pretty common though, you might want to try ABEbooks.com, or Bookfinder.com.

d_frontier, the black angled 3/8" drive wrench in the $17.00 batch is a Pratt & Whitney for the nuts holding the base of aircraft cylinders to the crankcase. In the field it was used with a heavy-duty 3/8" drive long extension. In a repair station they had a gooseneck driver that put the drive end directly over the wrench opening for use with a torque wrench. The straight extensions are quite common, but the goosenecks are very rare. The 9/16" 12-point version was also used on starters and generators.

this one is a bonney 5/8 pwa1560 i said dog bone since i use a similar stubby dogbone at work on our back-up hpdu for the osprey

I got this cool roll up door file cabinet.
pic02731.jpg

pic02732.jpg

Not sure if anyone else already mentioned this but this is actually a
photography darkroom PAPER SAFE.

It is light proof when the door is down.

I had a couple of these in my darkroom years ago.

Wow Lots of GREAT hauls!

an old torch, (I've see a lot of these around, this is my first copy; is this fueled by carbide maybe?), and a tiny (1 oz?) Copper head hammer (Sort of a ball peen) with a brass haft and I think a rosewood handle.

attachment.php

This is an alcohol torch. I just sold one the other day out of our miscellaneous bin that was in the box still.

Here is a 1936 flyer I found on eBay with one.

Chopper1 took a hit for the Ohio boys but I did OK this weekend. :)

45' extension cord.
14/3 wire with Hubbell Industrial Plugs each end. Stamped Hospital Grade on the plugs.
Should work great on any high-draw 120v tool around the shop, including my Brinkmann smoker if necessary. :)
$6
I couldn't bring my self to haggle over this onea as just one of the Hubbell end plugs is more than $6 alone. A ****** 16/3 indoor outdoor at Lowes is $20.

-----
EDIT: LOL, I just did a quick Google on the extension cord and wowsa:
Hubbell HBL8319C - 20A CONNECTOR 125V HOSPITAL GRADE (Female End)
Our Price: $65.76
TXMAS Eligible Product
Hospital Grade Plugs, Connectors *@#$Type: Connector *@#$Grade: Hospital Amperage Rating: 20 *@#$Voltage: 2 p/3 w *@#$NEMA Configuration: 5-20R
I guess the male end is the same so that's $120 in the 2 plugs alone new.
WOW!
-------

Black&Decker PRO variable speed jig saw.
I have a Bosch USA barrel Grip but my std. grip walked off a job site.
This should be a nice fill in for now.
USA made.
$8

Crafting cleanout seller of pink metal box (insert naughty joke here) full of 4 acceptable glue guns (Arrow, Emhart and Thermogrips) and approx. 250 glue sticks.
$8 for all including a nice pink box that will always put out for me. I hope. Hahahaha.

Final box the "50 cents a tool" raid less the level and big ball pien. They were $2.

32oz. Plumb USA ball pein that needs a handle.

16 oz. C'man USA ball pein head stamped Craftsman =Mark-M=
Looks like PO put a roll pin in the head to keep handle in. It should be interesting to re-handle this week for a fellow GJ member.

Klein small alum. topredo level with magentic holding strip. USA Made. Minty and spectacular.

Small Channel Lock diags. USA. Cutting edges sharp and clean. Rare as most folks usually ****** them up cutting no-no stuff over time.

Several USA C'man chrome sockets.

Several USA Bonney, Indestro, S-K and Blackhawk sockets. Most 1/2" drive.

Stnaley USA wood chisels for my wood working neighbor. :) He's worth a $1.

Gotta love the 50 cents a tool deals and they cost less when you buy more.

:)

I don't know where your getting your Hubbles for $6, but around here they can go for $10 used. If you can find them. I'm always on the lookout for those plugs. After ******* stage cable around for 20yrs, I just can't bring myself to trust store bought electrical cords and plugs. I've seen too many of them burn up from abuse. At this point, it's 12/3 S cable for me, or nothing.

Nice snag on the 14/3, I paid $20 for a 53' 12/3 two weeks ago and jumped for joy at that price.

I'd give you a "you ****", but I'm not sure the other members would understand why. :D

What the heck, at $6 - You **** ! :lol_hitti

Thought this weekend would be a bust when I found out I was occupied on Saturday morning. Still, I did some looking and found some stuff this morning.
First, a flea market I'd never been to. Purchase #1, $4:

Powr-Kraft combo, 2 PK DOEs, Proto DBE, MAC 14mm combo, SK and Challenger combos, Wizard DOE.
Second flea market buy, $12:

Cornwell test light, SO crow's foot, Blue Point Spark plug gapper, Blue Point vacuum pump, 2 Craftsman -v- sockets, a Cman =v= metric socket, one Penncraft, and one SK socket, a Cornwell hose tool, and a =Craftsman= 6" adjustable.
Third flea market buy, $15:

Armstrong 1-1/16" wrench, 12" Crescent adjustable, Bonney Bonalloy offset DBE, Duro Chrome tappet wrench, Proto thin wrench (water pump? chassis adjusment? aviation?), Select Steel auto kit wrench, Vaco stubby nutdriver, Bonney torque adapter. "PWA" prefix on the part number, looks like someone else just picked one of these up, too? When it rains, it pours when it comes to unusual stuff around here...

Next stop coming soon,

Thank you. :)

And to clarify, I got the whole extension cord set up as shown for $6.

That's the two Hubbell plugs that retail for $50+ each AND the 45' long 14/3 cord that is attached.

Around here a lot of scrappers want the copper without knowing the true value of the piece. See it all the time on stuff like that.
Dumb and sad.
The tool finds this week were nice but the extenion cord is worth far more to me in the long run.

Jakemac, I was buying Hubbell and Levitob Edison plugs for around 10 dollars each from Vincent Lighting when I did sound and lighting at school a few years ago. Haven't looked at their catalog lately but prices should be the same.

Jjjrmx, nice stuff! All of us Ohio guys had good finds!

The next stop looked promising, but I got there too early and was too far from home with too much to do to sit and wait. So I hit up a garage/estate sale close to home that advertised "small engine tools". Didn't have much hope since this was the last day of the last sale, but stopped in anyway. Didn't haggle and spent $10. First, the standard stuff:

Craftsman and Sturtevant torque wrenches (the Cman was clearly made by Sturtevant), Williams and Crescent (obviously Barcalo) combos, unbranded offset DBE, but I'm thinking Thorsen?, 3 Craftsman -v- and 1 Blue Point ignition wrenches, Crestalloy cutters that lived a hard life, an unmarked mystery special socket, 2 SO and 1 Proto (trimmed to size) Crow's feet, 4 Vlcheck sockets, 2 Craftsman =v= 8 point sockets, 2 Craftsman 1/2" drive =v= sockets (19/32" and 3/4"), 2 New Britain sockets, 1 SK, 1 Indestro, and 1 Hinsdale socket.
The rest:

Merc Tronics meter, Jemco multimeter, Ammco cylinder hone (with extra stones), Vlchek valve spring compressor, NAPA USA puller, Kiekhaffer Magneto/Distributor spring, Neway valve seat cutter, KD tools No. 2090 :)dunno:), Lectrolite 500 valve guide remover, Sealed Power piston ring expander, HMF fishing sinker pliers, KD pliers, Zim piston ring expander.

Flatintoone, nice score! That Bonney PWA wrench is for the R-2800 (and maybe R-4360) radial engine cylinder base nuts if it is for 5/8" hex.

Nice stuff jjrmx5, now I know who beats me to the good stuff at all the local sales. ;)

Say do you have a economical source of hammer handles? I have a few hammers that need to be re handled, but can't seem to find decent handles that will fit. :dunno:

So accurate about the scrappers. There is a guy that runs around my neighborhood on trash night with 8x8 sheets of plywood inclosing his bed. "Free scrap metal removal wanted" painted on them. I have seen them just cut cords off of large appliances, lamps, tv's, monitors, vacuums etc sitting at the curb. Like really? I often wonder if the scrap $ they get overcomes the gas $ needed to power that big truck. I swear he drives around from ~5-7pm every trash nigh.

I wonder if he makes it over to your neighborhood :dunno: The truck is super loud, so it is kinda hard to miss.

Boy, flat got back on track in a big way!:thumbup::thumbup:

:+1: $10? WOW, great stuff Flatintoone!!! Can you post a close of pic of those cutters please? I think I have the same pair, but they have no markings on them. Well the rust pits may have taken care of the markings. :lol_hitti

Zkling, check out Harry Epstein's for handles.

Online? Yes. ^^^^

C'man handles at Sears stores are still USA hickory and $2.99 to $4.99 a handle.

I use them when I want cheap but their sizes vary per store.

I also have a mom and pop hdwre store that gets in hickory handles from Indiana just up the road, USA made hickory with correct grains for $3.99 to $5.49 a piece. I fit, sand and refinish in Minwax stain and Deft clear or poly for not a lot of $$$ and a killer finish.

I just had them order a few smally handles for some 8oz to 12oz ball peins I found. :) And they do that for me.

I think they will have one for the 32oz. Plumb USA head I found as well in stock. If not they order it. Hell, I buy enough handles he gave me a 3lb driller sledge head from the back for free Friday knowing if I REALLY was gonna use it I had to buy a handle from him.
*******.
:)

I love to do anything but framing handles mainly as I find the full framer hammers for cheaper than the handle refit price.
Well...except the Vaughn I got in from Outlaw. :)

I'll deal with local prices if I get the awesome service and a 5 minute bike ride away for local hammer handle stuff I get now. No need for me to go all mail order.

Yes. I pedal down on the MTB with milk crate on the back for the goodies. Win-win.

YMMV.
:)

Metal colander is a Chinois. Pronounced "Shin-wah" in French.

AKA/translation "Chinaman hat" or "Chinese hat".

A term so made by the French for the colander that nowdays is often termed racist as a description and shaped like the hats worn by Chinese immigrants.

Useful kitchen tool tho.

I love the Crown Top box.
Picked same box up back in June for $2.
No top tray for me tho. :(

Outlaw.... What is the circular graph background you use to display your wares...?

We picked that up at a yard sale for a buck or two and I'm told its a quilting template for cutting out the sections. I liked it because it seems to (usually) help with the lighting and show scale well with it's one inch grid.

Similar should be available at any fabric/craft store.

Cool finds but I gotta say, with so many serial killers from Ohio, I don't want to know what the notches are for on that hammer:shocking:. . .

Ya know, the 45 degree cut in the handle did it to me as well.

:)

Notches were for grip is my guess. On both sides.

A loose head and screw in the end to hold it on was iffy.
It's a 32 oz PLUMB USA.
It's nice and I'm happy to use it. I own one already.
This is #2--If I can find a handle. :)

Tools are tools.

DNA testing and NCIS mass-spec swabs .........unlikely.

Picked up my first real tool box today from CL. Paid $160, so it seemed like a pretty good deal. I also stopped at Lowes to pick up some socket organizers. I'll still need some drawer liners and a top mat.
Susposedly, the top box is Proto and the bottom is Snap On. It's missing the bottom door, but that's alright with me.

Me too! I've still got my stage pin splitter, and my gam chek tool in my bag. I've got a case of Union stage pins in my gig box, just waiting for the next time I'm drafted to work at some tiny community theatre, where I spend most of my call time fixing gear.... been a long time though, and likely to be longer still. I just can't afford theatre anymore.

(still wrap up all my cords with an over and under "video wrap" too...)
(and I've got trick line ties on all my cords and air hoses)
(and most of them have color coded tape on them for length...)
(and half the stuff in my house has my name on it in sharpie, or written on board tape)
