My build has started. 30 by 34, 1, 10 by 10 overhead door. Also a lean to off the north side, 12 by 30 for tractor and wood shed
I tore down the shed that was used for farm equipment. It was sitting on 3 to 5 feet of gravel. It was a simple pole building, aluminum roof, mill felt and rough cut 2 by 6s. I took it down piece by piece. Going to use the lumber for walls and the old roofing is going to siding. You can see the future heat and the spots for a future 2 post lift. Got the blocks down and filled. I'm having a guy frame it, hopefully starting in few days

Why did you choose to use block?

I wanted the wood off the floor, for moisture reasons and for welding. Slag scooting across the floor won't go under a wall as easy, smolder and then, oops. Thats the thought anyway

I got the invoices for the floor.
1500.00 for the rebar and the insulation
3200.00 for the concrete and the contractor who poured it, 4000 psi crete
750. 00 for the pex-al-pex and the SS manifold
300 bucks for the blocks and mortar mix
150 bucks for the concrete mix to fill the blocks
50 bucks for anchor bolts and bag ties
so it looks like 6000 or so for the slab.

I would never be able to do that where I live (codes).

Yeah, I live in the sticks, we have no codes other than electrical and plumbing. We have no one to enforce either unless its the state guys. The state guys cover huge territories, unless some one calls them, they ain't coming. I ain't calling:bounce:
I'm not worried about frost as there is 3 to 5 feet of gravel under the slab thats been there for 25 years. Its as good as it gets for a base.

Nice slab. Seems like a decent price for all that - I paid $5200 for a 24x40, without the tubing. Don't need footers up here either - all sand based.

You need frost susceptable soil to have an issue with frost. If this hadn't been filled with gravel years ago I would have had to go with a frost wall. The area I'm building on is wet but the gravel takes care of that

How was the hurricane. My family in Nova Scotia said it wasn't that bad. We got nailed with tornadoes up here in Toronto, but where I live (about an hour east) which is usually storm central on the lake, we got just a good thunder storm. Hope your framing is still standing.

It was far enough away so we didn't really get any wind. Go out a few miles and it was bad. they had 15 18 foot seas at Acadia Nat'l park and folks got swept out to sea when a rogue wave hit:shocking:

Here's some pics of what it looked like at Acadia

Still waiting for roof:mad: Got the rough in wiring done, can't get the feeder in until siding is up. Put the soffit vents in and plugged the soffits so blown in won't get in there. Used plastic vents called pro vent. Started putting the rigid foam on the ceiling, should finish that up next weekend and hopefully start putting the plywood up on ceiling? Pics later

2" of polyurethane foam on ceiling and a pic of the vents and insulation blocking the blown in from filling the soffits. Still haven't decided what to use on the ceiling. Either osb or plywood of some type. Have to figure it out so I can order it tomorrow for delivery by this weekend

Little more progress. If you go back to my first pics, the roof that was on the original building is now siding on the shop. 2 of the 4 walls are done. I need to piece in around the man door to finish the 3rd wall. The back wall is going to be finished with solar panels for heat, hopefully by next winter(2010, 11). Got the ceiling done so I can get insulation blown in and get the garage door installed. Had to wait until that was done before calling them in. Insulation in a week or so, Garage door in 2 or 3 weeks. Need to get closed in as it was 39 this morning so winter is on its way:mad:

Oh yeah, need to power wash siding as its covered with mildew from being under the shade off some big maple trees, will wash right off

Getting cold around here. The shop has been staying above 50 eeven with temps in the 30s at night. Apparently the slab is still warm as it still mostly an empty building. Primed the ceiling and got a coat of latex on it today. :(probably need another coat:( I hate painting. Got the woodstove installed and fired it up today to get temps above 60 for painting. Already changed the woodstove install, put it up on blocks to get it above 18 inches

Don't wash the siding! It looks great as it is, makes it look as if it's been there for years. You can't buy that sort of patina.

Thats a good idea, even if I washed it only the black would come off, the weather aluminum look would stay. Thanks for that,I'll leave it

Got 12 8ft T8 Fixtures up today, wired and working. Nice an bright, pics tomorrow. Now I can finish insulation and OSB. Maine in November thru January is one dark place. This makes it much better to do work in there. The wood stove helps also, the place heats like a dream. I burned the cardboard boxes and a few scraps of wood today and took it from 53 to 64 easily. 53 is the lowest temp I've seen in there, it was 32 this morning and 23 on thursday and friday. I think the solar is really going to work once I get it going

Heres the pics, 2 inside showing how bright it is, probably going to put up 2 more over my bench area, will wait until I see if needed though. Last pic is for fun, Texaco star off a canopy I converted to Mobil awhile back

Got all my OSB up today, still a few screws missing but I can do that during the week. Bought another 5 gallon bucket of Kilz so priming the walls is next. The place heats like a dream, no fire for 2 days temp went from 57 yesterday to 60 today. Its only 45 outside and I only have 3 small windows on west and south side. Can't wait to see if the place will even freeze

Its been in the low single digits at night all week, 20 to 25 mph winds, no heat in my shop at all, in fact I haven't been in there all week until today. 41 degrees in there this afternoon:shocking:. I'm almost positive my solar scheme is going to heat this place once I get it done
