According to the link in the CL ad the K260 combo was exactly $90. No idea how much that amounts to in modern terms.

Huh, interesting. So compare that to a small modern Snap On combo and I think you'll find that it's considerably less.

This is big news people. Snap On tools are actually getting cheaper, not more expensive

And I would assume that back then it was more time and more actual man hours in the manufacturing process compared to todays automated computerized manufacturing.

Neat. But I think you guys are comparing apples to oranges here. The one posted a while back was a KR-61 super chest. This one is a K-60, much smaller, rarer, older and sought after in comparison. It was made during the war effort. Where as the KR-61's were post war effort. Is it worth what they are asking? No way, not in my opinion. It has a cool rounded appearance to it when all closed up.

Of all the how it made eppisode SO doesn't use many robots. The only cnc process on the ratchet is in the head. Everything else was done by a person. Note this is just one example.

If I owned that box, or it's brethren, it wouldn't be for sale. That is one of the few tool boxes I truly lust for. (But not at that price)

I have a SO box that is actually a tic older. It is a two drawer carry box, a KR21 from 1934 - 38 No where near that large, and no where near the cool factor with the rounded corners and front side drawers.

Maybe someday...

Those boxes were made slightly prior, but mostly during the U.S.'s involvement in WWII. I don't think that exact one was made in 1938, that is just a catalog the seller linked to, but . Machines and tools produced during that time are informally refereed to war effort tools, as they could have and most likely were used to manufacture or work on item for use in the war. Those chests were built very late 30's to the mid/late 40's.

Some manufactures made some interesting design changes during this time in effort to save materials and speed up production for the war. Delta being one very good example.

I just think pre/during WWII items are neat and different from those post WWII, like the aforementioned (KR-61) vs this box.

Yes, just bustin balls.. hope to stumble upon a box of that era myself but not holding my breathe. Especially here in Phoenix. As you say, 38-45 is definitely a super cool and important era for tools though.

Old SnapOn , old coins, a 53 Corvette, stamp collections....Some folks do enjoy collecting, and have a different definition of value.... My thoughts are not always on the same side of that fence, but I enjoy the flavor these folks add to our everyday world...

I'm wouldn't say that you're wrong with respects to the asking price of the seller. This is an item that I've looked high and low for a number of years. The thought of actually owning one excites me because my search might be over.

I'm convinced that one of these do not exist in Colorado, so this is another shot at trying to land this mother.

I've become quite the lover of old boxes and I would argue that this is the quintessential set for collectors.

I saw this thread late last night and it about blew me away!

I have my father's tool chest that he used during WWII when he worked at Lockheed Burbank building P-38's. My father was deferred from service for most of the war because he worked in a defense plant; however, as the war was winding down and they stopped P-38 production he lost his deferment so he applied to be a cadet (pilot) and was accepted, but the cadet program was also ended and he was drafted.

I was born while he was in Basic Training.

I can remember the day he brought this box home because he went into management. I was in about the thrid or forth grade at the time. His box was filled with early Blue Point and Snap-on tools. I quickly claimed this box as "mine" and out of it I worked on my bike, coasters and anything else I could take apart and try to put back together then my '51 Ford I had in high school.

I am just moving into my newly completed garage and brought Dad's toolbox home just this last week after having it in storage for 17 years.

To me, this box is worth far more than $1,650, its priceless

I sometimes daydream that if I was rich I would have an old fashioned 1930s-1940s garage built on my property and I would fill it with old tools, boxes and memorabilia from that era. Except I wouldnt have a show palace like some of the great places I have seen on here, in my daydreams my place would be gritty and everything well used.

That was a cool story and nice box Harley Monster, a priceless gift from your father.
