Yeah, I forgot to bring the camera down with me when I took the dog out for a walk yesterday; I'll snap some pics this weekend. Met with the electrician at lunch time, got the shopping list for the rest of the items that I need to buy, and he'll be back with his helper next Friday morning to do the deed. Just tried to load up the man lift, but it's over 10,000 pounds, so I'm trying to decide if I'll go the ladder route or call for a rollback to get the man lift. I can probably hang the canopy lights without the lift, but the flourescents would be a challenge without a helper and a second ladder (which reminds me that I need to check the height of my ladder...pretty sure it's tall enough).

Still deciding on how I'm going to mount the lights, but I laid them all out on the floor approx. where they'll go (need to find the 'perfect' layout that I drew up at work last week that has the measurements on it). With a little bit of work, I ended up with 10 working flourescents out of the 12 (only 9 were sold as working) that I got off Craigslist. I'm thinking that I'll either use 2x4's or uni-strut to hang the lights from and just stick them up in the rafters. I re-stacked the boxes that fell over and ran the coax, phone line & network cable up to the house (I found a nice piece of conduit with a bulkhead fitting off of a portable imaging lab that we got in at work to part out and scrap, so I used that for the start of the run through the siding...I got a few other little useful bits too that'll show up in the building over the next few days...probably should go raid the back room at our surplus store) and terminated & tested the phone and network succesfully, so I'll finish putting that in conduit & bury the two spots where it crosses the 'yard' tomorrow. I'll probably hang lights tomorrow as well. The siding blocks/boxes should be here Monday, so I'll get those set one evening after work and the exterior lights mounted so that they're ready for the electrician too. Also met a local Jeeper who started up a club when I responded to his Craigslist ad looking for some springs, so I'm looking forward to meeting the rest of the guys and possibly joining up. I've been out of the loop since we moved out here over a year ago (was active in a local Jeep club in IL and regularly bought/sold/traded parts and helped people work on their Jeeps), so it was nice to reconnect. I think my wife was getting used to not having random Jeep people show up at the house ;)

Well, that was fun. Went out to cut the grass one last time and mulch the fallen leaves and darn near set myself on fire, but the lawn tractor took the brunt of it. I'd like to smack the engineer who thought that putting a hot muffler outside of the cowl and right by the foot rest was a good idea. At least the rest of the day was uneventful. Three of the four metal halide canopy lights are mounted (still no response from the seller, so I'm probably going to have to file a dispute tomorrow) and I installed the boxes for the welder outlet and boiler hook-up. Planning to hang the rest of the lighting after work this week.

The electrician came out on Friday (I suspect that he didn't get there until almost noon judging by the lack of progress when I came home for lunch) and took care of all of the outside stuff (mast, meter base, ground rods) while his assistant got started on the inside (ran the feeds for the two rear wall circuits and the heating pump). They came back around 10:30 AM on Saturday, buttoned up the outside, ran the circuits for the compressor, the welder, and the other three walls, messed up the circuit for the boiler despite me leaving a note on Friday and then making sure that the assistant understood what he was supposed to do on Saturday. I swear there's something in the water out here...these folks work slowly, can't follow directions, and don't seem to have enough sense to stop and ask questions. He was instructed to take my roll of 8-3, run the welder circuit on the back wall, the boiler circuit next to it, and then use whatever was leftover for another welder circuit on the right wall. Well, he ran 12-2 for the boiler and then ran the second welder circuit with the 8-3 leaving me short for the correct boiler run, so I ended up with the correct boiler circuit further down the wall than I wanted it after I pointed out the screw-up. They said that they'd do my branch circuits even though I said I planned to do them myself later, so I went on and put up the boxes & conduit Friday night, and of course they didn't finish that (only ran one), so I did that myself yesterday in about 45 minutes. The feeds for the lights were run down the wrong conduits, so I have to pull them back and swap them and then run all of the lines to the lights. They also ran one of the light circuits with 14-3 when they were supposed to use the 12-2, so I had to buy more 14-3 this morning and order another 15 amp breaker. I can't complain too much for $600 (I was at least smart enough not to pay the guys by the hour) which was a bargain and they did do a good job overall...very neat & orderly, nothing half-*ssed. I bent and installed the last piece of conduit for the lights last night and prepped the branch circuits so that I can install the receptacles. Probably button those up this evening and get started on the lights.

All of the receptacles are in and buttoned up, the outside light for the man door is up and working (have it plugged into an extension cord running down from the house), and all but two of the boxes for the lights are installed. I have two short wire runs to those boxes plus one run from a 3-way switch on the north wall to the flourescent light outlets on the south to finish up as well as a run for the outside light over the overhead doors. Of course I checked one of the flourescent light receptacles that the electrician did and the travelers were just sitting in the box unconnected, so I have to do all of the 3-way wiring as well...what was the point of installing the darn things & wrapping them in electrical tape when the job wasn't done?!?!?

Almost done. I have one 240V light receptacle to install (wires are in the box, just ran out of steam around midnight last night and couldn't stand another trip up the ladder), the traveler and receptacle for the last flourescent light, the overhead door light and wiring, and the switches. I called this morning to schedule the electrical service connection and if I finish up the rest tonight, I'll call in the morning to let them know that they can do the full final inspection.

Finished up the last two lighting receptacles, just have to install the outdoor light over the overhead doors and put the switches in. Passed the electric service inspection yesterday, so I'm calling AEP in a bit to schedule the service connection...might have power next week depending upon the engineer's schedule.

Nice looking build. I am interested in seeing the finish details.

Also nice to see some familiar names (you and DDawg). I'm from the off-road community as well (if you recall I wrote a few articles on off-road as well).

Hey pnut!! I remember you from ORC...you're in MI if I recall correctly. Your attention to detail is always inspiring. It's definitely going to be a slow finish as I'm pretty much out of cash...just wrote the check for the overhead doors, but that could be a good thing as it gives me time to decide on finishes and to shop around.

Forgive me if I missed it but where on the property is the shop.... From the pics it looks as if its between the road and the house.... I was thinking it was behind the house??? Nice build by the way

Yup, it ended up in a clearing before you get up to the house. The house is located pretty much at the zoning limits in the southwest corner of the property, so there was nowhere to go behind it or next to it.

Picked up my last Ebay purchase of 2x2 flourescents (those will probably go in my basement) and a 2x2 metal halide canopy light Saturday on my way back across PA from visiting the in-laws for Thanksgiving. Started installing the outdoor light over the overhead doors this afternoon but got rained out. AEP will probably be out this week to connect the overhead service.

Pretty much buttoned up everything and waiting on AEP now. Should have the parts this week to fix the broken metal halides and the multi-tap parts to convert the last one that I picked up on the way home after Thanksgiving.

Outside lights installed:

Darn...almost had power today but the ground was too soft for the utility truck and the engineer didn't have a tall enough ladder with him. He said that he'd be back tomorrow with a taller ladder and a helper (read: younger guy to scurry up & down the ladder).

Three of the five 400 watt metal halides installed. Number 5 is in the basement and I converted it with a multi-tap setup last night. Should have the replacement bulbs & socket from the Ebay guy this week...spoke with him last Tuesday and they were supposed to be shipped last Wednesday:

Woohoo!! Passed my final inspections with just one minor hiccup...inspector wants me to replace a split lug that bolts 3 ground wires together with an 'irreversable crimp' (like anybody would go and unbolt the darn ground wires which will be covered up once I finish the interior...oh well). Going to call in the morning and see if just throwing a couple of tack welds on there will suffice. Now for the 'official' move in and unpacking...

*Finally* got the replacement socket & bulbs from the Ebay guy and all of the metal haildes are up & working. Over the holiday break I put the CJ-7 inside, staged the Scrambler near a door at work so that I can load it on the trailer to bring home, unloaded all of the skids to clear the floor space (still need to bring home some pallet racking from work), and setup the garage PC. Next break I'll probably setup the pallet racking and hang some flourescent lights.

Electrican came by Saturday afternoon and replace d the split bolt with a crimp. I brought the Scrambler home and backed the trailer in. Saving up my pennies for the heating components and insulation. Had no power in most of the warehouse last week, so I couldn't see to dig out the pallet racking; probably do that this week.

Minor updates:

Hung a couple of old 8' T-12's by the south wall for quick light when I just need to run in for a bit. Scored some free 4' T5 HO's from the local electrician (they had them up in their building for a while, do all of our electrical work at the warehouse, and I've helped them out with IT stuff a few times so the owner was nice enough to give some to me) and started getting those setup over the weekend between honey-do projects. Grundfos pump for the heating system came in, looking for some deals on insulation and OSB for the walls & ceiling. I did have the pleasure of snagging my voice/data lines the first time I cut the grass (hadn't buried the portion at the edge of the woods yet and got a little too close) so I'm going to re-run the portion from the house down to where it's broken at the building side (the mower ripped out a few feet of wire) and splice them there. Also got some new tenants: Swisher 60" trailmower, couple of Polaris 250's, and another Craftsman roller.

Scored a deal on Craigslist for a bunch of used 3" blue board. $450 for a stack about 10'x40'x5'. Picked up a little over half of it Wednesday after work with my buddy's pickup and flatbed trailer and I'm a little over halfway done unloading it and stacking it in the building. Hopefully I'll finish unloading tonight and head back down for the rest of it in the morning.

Got plenty of insulation to do the job and will probably have enough left for when I finish the basement. Mom passed away unexpectedly on July 9th, so I've been back home in Jersey and haven't gotten started putting it up yet.

Sorry about your loss, the Joint will be waiting for you when you are ready to work on it again. I am interested to see how you use the blue board and how it works out. That is quite a stack for what you paid for it. Nice score.

Thanks guys...unfortunately that wasn't the end of things for July; my wife's stepmother passed away right after we got back from Jersey. This has been my first 'normal' week in a month. Probably going out to Pittsburgh this weekend to haul back my buddy's '67 Firebird (all original, numbers matching resto project).

Place is looking good. sorry to hear about your losses.

No need to haul that firebird all the way to ohio...just drop it off down here, I'll find it a new home .

I finally got an update on my building as well.

Jeepskate , condolences to you and family for the loss of your Mother.
You have a fantastic piece of property there. That new shop is really something to be admired. Look forward to seeing more on the build and more about the Jeeps too !

Great thread so far, I've really enjoyed reading about it.

Sorry to hear about your losses, it's unfortunate that these things always seem to come in multiples--In the past 9 months I've lost two grandparents, an aunt, and a great uncle... never thought I'd get so much use of a $99 black suit :-/

Finally been cranking away on the insulation the past few weekends and I'm a little better than 3/4's of the way done with insulating the walls (have to get in behind the stacks of insulation to get at the last two sections of the north wall). It looks a little crazy since much of it was painted to use as stage sets, but it'll do the job and the price was right. I also got some more free HO T5's from the electrician...I may not ever turn those metal halides on again. Heading to Jersey to check on dad this weekend, so I'll have to finish up next weekend. Not sure how I'm going to tackle the ceiling yet...

Snapped a couple of cell phone pics when I took the dog out last night. I put 1.5" XPS pieces behind all of the posts and sprayed expanding foam all along the bottom between the siding and skirt boards to seal up those air leaks. The 3" XPS is attached to the girts except for an area behind the PEX manifolds; I put it between the girts there so that the area would be recessed for mounting a panel with the manifolds, pump, boiler, etc and will cover the one exposed girt with 1.5" XPS.

Everything looks like a dream garage on these forums It's quite fantastic. I bet your so happy to get this project finished.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, just need to find a money tree to shake for the boiler and a lift...all in due time.
