did you look at the pretty "Tesla" tile looking solar panels?
When I was building I considered the Tesla tiles but they were not available. Given the shade constraints it was critical for me to have a system that uses microinverters, and that limits choices.
With that in mind , the LG 380s are a very efficient panel that looks good.

Sorry to bother you! I have a couple of WRX questions.
Do you have any local PDX / VAN recommendations for WRX tuners and new parts sources.
I have a 2008 WRX and will be swapping a 2008 TD04 turbo for a 2009 VF52 turbo. As you can see this will be a mild swap. I would rather support local shops if I can. Again sorry to bother you. Thank you

Update

With the solar system installed and working I have moved onto the battery storage project. My primary goal with the battery storage solution is to allow for storage of excess energy from the solar production and use it during non solar production times. I also wanted to design a system that can also be used for off-grid power production in concert with a generator.

The use of a battery system can provide a significant amount of optimization to a generator off-grid operation. Without batteries a genset has to run 100% of the time that you want an active grid, regardless of actual power usage. This means you often have a generator running at very low load which is often a very inefficient operating zone. The addition of a battery system allows the genset to be ran only as needed to charge the batteries or provide peak power load. For example at night you can often run the entire night without a need for the genset to run.

I considered both the Tesla Powerwalls as well as the EnPhase EnCharge system but only then EnCharge solution supports generator integration. The Tesla batteries are really cool, but they are oriented towards a much less sophisticated setup. Given that I already have Enphase microinverters the use of the compatible Enphase battery system makes for a workable integration.

I am using 4 of the 10.5kWh EnCharge 10 units [a total of 42kWh], the EnCharge Smartswitch, and the IQ Combiner. The integrated into the existing ‘generator’ system I already implemented to provide backup power for those circuits. (which covers the majority of the house). My solar system us a 20kw system using 53 LG panels.

Before the battery install, and after the solar install. You can see the solar connection panel on the left side.

The battery packs have integrated Enphase IQ8 microinverters that are grid creation capable. These can create a 240V grid, both synchronized and unsynchronized. The 120V neutral is created in an autotransformer built into the smart switch.

The batteries hang on the wall, and I did a layout that allows me to add 2 more battery packs on this well, and 6 more on the orthogonal wall.

Fully installed, the system is ready for commissioning, which should happen later this week.

LOL...gotta be a Physics major using the term orthogonal...I remember quantum mechanics and math physics. Such a nerd that i loved it all! Your setup looks great!!

Electrical Engineer, but indeed the term orthogonal comes up more than one might expect in signals and systems. and walls. ;)

This is a really cool system. Seems like with the solar, genarator, batteries, you have made one heck of a stable/redundant system. I really like it. How often does your site lose power?

We lose power mostly in the winter due to above ground lines that are taken down by tree. On average perhaps a day or two per year, but sometimes it can be longer. Last year there were other people close by that had power outages that lasted 7+ days.

Jeff,

Absolutely amazing. Seeing someone able to take full advantage of each of the hobbies I'm either involved with or generally interested in is inspiring and really cool to see on this scale. I noticed with you being in the fields that you are in, have you thought about 3D Printing? Also not sure if time would allow you or you would want to, I suspect a video game called, "Factorio" may be something that would fulfill some engineering urges 😁. Best of luck and thank you for being so documented with the process, it has been a blast getting to this point over several days.

I do a bit of 3d printing with a Creative and a Prusa, and as time permits I'll certainly do more. It is a great way to prototype things and sometimes it can make the perfect part for something! I'll check out that game too!

You are a talented individual. I recognized your name from the FFR build, and am not surprised to see your talents are nearly unlimited!
Amazing work all around.

Read through the whole thread and will be taking a bunch of your ideas as I go through and reno my first house. And will also take a bunch of notes for if/when we build a house in the future! Great thread and epic house.

Congrats!

Somehow I missed this during the actual build phase, and just found it a week or two ago. Very impressive build, with lots of technology that is beyond my understanding but within my appreciation capabilities! Hope to see more about the cars, as others have mentioned :)

Yep, super cool build it was.... It would be a huge treat if Jeff was able to give an update, but I also know how life has a way of taking up all our time, with very little left over for forums..... Hope you're doing great Jeff, all the best to ya man!
