I’m very curious how well a $200 plasma cutter works compared to something in the $1000 range. The claim of cutting 3/8” is likely exaggerated, it may sever 3/8” with a poor cut and very slowly. My $1600 60amp plasma cutter is rated at 80” per minute in 1/4” steel with a cut rating of 5/8” and sever cut capability of 1-1/8”. I’m thinking these Jegs units will work fine on 16 gauge sheet metal, but anything over 1/8” will cause it to struggle. I hope these work out well for you guys, but until I used one first hand I’d be hesitant. I’d rather not have a tool than have a really crappy version of said tool that just causes frustration.
I made the mistake of purchasing a $229 HF mig welder 20 years ago, there wasn’t enough amperage to weld two pieces of 1/8” steel together. I returned it and purchased a $450 Hobart 130 that worked significantly better (and one of my buddy’s still owns last I knew).
some testing here
no it's not going to beat your $1600 plasma
I finally got around to trying out the Jeg's plasma cutter Saturday. It worked fine, but had an internal air leak that appears to be pretty common with this unit. So I called customer service and arranged an exchange. I took my air dryer, tools, and an air tank with me when I picked up the replacement. It leaked, too. So did the third one we tried at the counter with the sales guy. I'm supposed to hear back from them Monday. My hopes aren't high that I'll end up with good one.
It looks like a generic Cut-40D with their logo slap on it ?
Yep. Used to go on ebay for less than two bills.
Decent on sheetmetal, my biggest issue was the stiff plastic on the whip.
Why not just fix the issue like others have? Seems like a small price to pay for a good $200 plasma cutter.
I thought about it, but the Delaware warehouse is 20 minutes away, and I didn't want whatever warranty there was to be voided because I opened the case. Also, WTF is with the regulator gauge? I wish I would have taken a picture of it. There are two sets of meaningless numbers with no units. I had no idea what it was even set to, just that I had my compressor regulated down to 80 psi ahead of the dryer.
