Jet JMD-18 Mill Drill

Does any body have one of these and are they worth it. I can get a seldom used one with stand and some tooling for about 2 grand. That is about 2800 bucks worth of stuff new.

Or is this just a glorified drill press.

Also try your question at the above site. Mill drills are a capable machine. It sounds like the price is a bit high though.

Most of these types of mill/drills are manufactured by Rong Fu. There are also some lesser quality Rong Fu clones. You can get the exact same mill/drill as the Jet branded as a Grizzly for $1295.00. Generally they're pretty robust machines for the money.

I tend to like Grizzly over Jet on comparable machines because Grizzly is way better about getting replacement parts if they're needed.

I have done some pretty serious jobs on my Ru Fong mill drill. They have their limitations, but can do a lot of work. They are limited in spindle nose to table distance and any vertical travel has do be done with the quill after setting the head for height.

In my estimation, 50% of new price for the mill and tooling is maximum. At two grand, you are getting into Bridgeport (clone) territory, and it is well worth a few more bucks to get the more versatile machine.

As said you can get the same thing under different names for less.
To me it looks like $1000 tops assuming it has a bunch or tooling and is in near new shape

I picked up a JMD-18 for less that 600 last year off CL and thought that was high, however it had no tooling or stand.

The major limitation with the JMD-18 is the round column. If you need to reset during milling you need to recenter the quill on the stock.

I have the Rong Fu they are ok but really just a toy. I full size Bridgeport would be much better.

With full sized Bridgeports going for the same or less, to me it's an easy decision to pass on the mill/drill and step up to the real deal.

As others have stated, hold out for a "real" / larger mill such as a Bridgeport or the like. Avoid the round column mills for a general purpose mill. Especially at that price. If space is really at a premium, look for one of the smaller clausing 8520 mills.
