I need a jis screwdriver, because all my Phillips are stripping out my Honda and Lexus rotor screws. How can i tell if my screwdriver I have right now is JIS? I found this screwdriver in my 1994 ls400 trunk from the factory tool kit, is it safe to assume this is JIS? I’m having a hard time telling the difference between the two despite there being info online.

Not sure about what you have. does it fit the screws differently than a phillips? A thought is,you might want to just break down and buy a set of 3 good known pozi-drives screwdrivers.

I have the old grey hard handle Snap On ones that I looked at as a one-time purchase when I bought them 30 years ago. I also have a set of wood handle Wera for the basement.

I'm already decked out in Vessel screwdrivers, but if I was looking for a set, this is a good one that Epstein's is selling. Has 2 sizes of the Impacta's, and a nice assortment of other sizes/styles of JIS screwdrivers

Although my rotor screws didn’t have the dot usually associated with identifying JIS screws but I know they are JIS which is weird

That doesn’t look like a JIS tip, but I really can’t be sure.

I just bought that set that @kyrbz mentioned from Epstein’s about a week ago. I had a smaller set that’s worked well for me so decided to pick up some more. This set is a good way to stock up on jis/iso screwdrivers without having to pay for a bunch of less useful flathead screwdrivers along with it. Epstein’s has it priced so that after shipping it’s about the same price as from other vendors who have “free shipping,” plus you can get free box art!

In a pinch, you might try checking Home Depot to see if they gave Japanese made Makita cross head screwdriver bits.
Those might work decently in a pinch.

The driver you linked me is a Phillips though??? These are old school 90s Lexus JIS rotor screws I need to get off

The JIS standard no longer exists for new screwdrivers. Vessel is fine. Wera is fine. Wiha is fine. Plenty of companies make drivers which are backwards compatible with JIS.

Vessel says their drivers are "beyond" jis.

This is the Lexus branded screwdriver made in Japan. Look like jis?

So hopefully someone can chime in. Don’t have time for ordering stuff online unfortunately, and i am dumbfounded that I can find JIS screwdrivers in store anywhere around anywhere. And sure, new wera and other high end brands may be compatible, but I don’t see any of those in store anywhere. I wonder if our snap on guy has some. Why should I have to buy fancy expensive screwdrivers to take screws out of a Japanese car which millions are driving around on our roads

It's difficult to tell the difference without measuring holding them side by side and carefully examining. I personally wouldn't waste any time with a road-side repair tool kit screwdriver. It's meant to take interior trim pieces off - not remove stuck rotor screws.

I don't know how you "don't have time to order stuff online". In the time you spent uploading pictures of that screwdriver, you could have ordered any of the numerous products people have posted in this thread.

JIS has been superseded by DIN standards, and any premium screwdriver should be built to those standards - SnapOn included.

I can’t visually tell the difference but after stripping a few screws on Japanese vehicles with good condition Klein/enderes/usa cornwell stuff I just bit the bullet and bought Vessel. Is there a Lowe’s near you? They stock Wiha. Also some Ace hardwares stock Craftsman ball grip screwdrivers which are rebranded Vessel made in Japan. https://www.acehardware.com/departments/tools/hand-tools/screwdrivers/2438943

vessel may say phillips, but they are made to work on JIS stuff. I have multiple atv's and work on all sorts of atvs, bikes, etc of japanese origin-only use vessel.

fyi you might as well drill the screw out anyways, they are useless.

I have used some of those Lexus kit tools and knowing the fitment, I would say confidently the screwdriver is JIS. Those early kits had tools from Japan, some from KTC. They are still economy tools though and nothing really special.
Those first-gen LS400’s were tough. I drove one for a while. Solid, dependable, fast, agile.

That's an easy question to answer. SO THAT YOU DON'T DESTROY THE SCREW HEADS AND NEED TO DRILL THE SCREWS OUT. I introduced TOPTUL'S DIN screwdrivers to my friends that have Honda motorcycles and they were amazed at how well they fit the screw heads. They told everybody that they ride with and I ended up selling 50 screwdrivers to grateful Honda bike owners. If you're too cheap to buy a $10 screwdriver that will save you hours of work I don't think any of us can help you.

Says this in the description on the TSC site;

  • VESSEL's original Phillips tip profile for best fitting especially with Japanese (JIS) screws

That being said, I'm with vssjim above. These rotor screws should be taken out with an impact driver.

x3. Either use a manual impact driver or grab a Vessel impacta for a rotor screw. You might be able to get it off with an electric impact driver and a good-fitting bit, but it's so much effort if you mess up that I wouldn't bother.

The Vessel multi-bit balldriver already mentioned a couple of times in this thread is an excellent tool for very little money. I have one. That's got to be the cheapest way to know for sure you have a high quality screwdriver compatible with JIS. I would absolutely buy that if you're not sure you have a JIS driver.

What screwdriver brand do you already own? There's definitely screwdrivers compatible with JIS that aren't labelled that way. I was using my Urrea impact-cap screwdrivers on the weekend to remove some JIS screws from my 1970's Mazda pickup. I know my Bahco/Irazola set also fits JIS very well.

But time to start this thread?
I'll cast another vote for Vessel, Sr. Bezos has them under $10

Technically no one makes actual JIS screwdrivers anymore, but there is an ISO standard that supersedes JIS, and is compatible both JIS and Phillips standards. I believe this is why newer Phillips drivers are not as "sharp" (for lack of a better word) as they used to be.

That said, get the Vessel. They are among the best screwdrivers you can get, and they do fit JIS screws well.

so-you-re-telling-me-that-s-not-a-phillips.jpg

JIS screwdrivers, and the new ISO standard Phillips screwdrivers, fit traditional Phillips screws just fine because the splines full engage. However, the old Phillips screwdriver style doesn't fit JIS screws well because it's "voids" between the splines aren't as deep - so it doesn't fully seat.

Vessel, by the way, still advertises "JIS" on their screwdrivers, but like Bubba Fett said, I'm not sure they're actually JIS tips. Whatever they are, they fit JIS screws really well.
