Network cabinet looks great! I didn't know there was such a thing. All of my ethernet cables dump into a basement closet and I've long been wanting to build in a little equipment rack and centralize more of my network stuff. But yours looks great. Makes troubleshooting easier when it's tidy!

The Hue hub sends it's Zigbee signals fine in that metal enclosure? Not sure if it would make much of a difference, but just curious. Does it get hot in there at all?

The network cabinet looks impressive!

Thanks! I'm very happy with it

what type of subwoofer do you have under your couch ?

thanks.

It's a Sonos Sub, it's paired wirelessly with a Beam soundbar. This combination if perfect for our living room

Thank you! Yes we were lucky that when the house was originally built they ran Cat5 cables to MOST of the rooms, although sometimes weird placement. I guess it was because they were using them as phone lines. And they all terminated in that nice cabinet.

I had originally wanted to put a home server enclosure in as well, but the other users of the closet were less than impressed with this plan.

But yes there seems to be no problems with the signals getting through. There is the Hue hub, modem, switch and camera base station. The only items that generates noticeable heat is the modem, and it doesn't seem to be any worse than when it was sitting out. Time will tell I guess

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.
After about a year of living with my pegboard situation I decided it was time to make some "ease of accessibility changes". I now have an idea of what tools to add, and which to remove.

01.jpg

I also had a few utility issues to address. Every time I grabbed a tool from a round hole, the tool holder would go flying off the pegboard. Wall control has a slot system to improve this, but there is a catch. In a previous post I mentioned that I didn't realize that Wall Control boards come in horizontal AND vertical configurations. OF course I had ordered the wrong one.I had attempted to cut my own horizontal slots, and after 4 of them I decided this was a nightmare I should try to wake up from.

02.jpg

So, as I have done many, many previous times in my life I bought something twice. Only this time with the correct slot orientation, as well as all the tool holders I would need. Apparently UPS dropped the box out a plane onto my doorstep, because all 8 corners looked about like this:

03.jpg

But a few minutes with the need nose pliers and we were back in business.

05.jpg

06.jpg

07.jpg

I still have a few small tools to add, but all and all I'm very happy with it. I would have liked to add another electric driver with a 1/8 inch drill bit, but I just ran out of room. Most surprising tool I kept was the ruler, which as it turns out I use all the time.

That looks really good. The tools you put up there are pretty much the same tools I use in my garage all the time too.

Thanks! My only complaint is the wall control tool holders are a little big, I'm working on some 3D printed spacers now. If they turn out I'll share them for sure

Finally getting around to my shop stool
MVIMG_20190619_211524.jpg

I don't want to fully restore it, I like some of the character - but I'm nor crazy about the color, the rust, and I don't want it to look quite so abused.

Disassembly was pretty straight forward
IMG_20190620_155649.jpg

I'm using evaporust for the rusty stuff
IMG_20190620_155719.jpg

And some minor wood refinishing
IMG_20190620_223707.jpg

This guy is going to need some work
IMG_20190620_155701.jpg

But I'm leaving the seat bracket alone because it's in good shape and the decal is awesome

Hey Jo3l, you were asking me about smart home light switches awhile back.

Have you seen this new offering from Lutron?

Lutron Aurora Switch

http://www.lutron.com/en-US/Product...immers-Switches/SmartBulbDimmer/overview.aspx

Not cheap necessarily, but looks like a decent option for controlling Hue lights and not doubling up on wall switches. I don't have one or anything, just thought you might be interested. I might try one out and see if I like it.

Thanks Nick, I hadn't seen those before. I actually haven't had any issues with the Hue lights since I complained about them on here. I've been trying out a several different types of switches as well. Once I find a winner I'll add them to my post.

Thanks again!

Free time this summer has been tough to come by, but I was able to finish up the stool.

Wow, very impressed with this thread. First time stumbling onto it. Well done working with your space (looks to be a similar size to mine). And your interior styling is also very nice. I've always loved that chair with the metal wrap. Keep it up!

Thanks so much! FYI, I had saved a bunch of photos from your garage build thread in my "garage ideas" folder

I love the metal aviator chair too, but I'm learning that all the metal edges aren't the best for having a 2 year old... One more "boo boo" from it and my wife might banish it to my office

Really cool thread. I hope my wife doesn't see your entertainment center or I will be busy! Here is my hidden shed, 6'W x 12' D:

Great thread. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Thank you and no problem! This forum gave me all my ideas so I love sharing how it turns out.

Awesome. I know i really enjoyed sharing and grabbing ideas from this site as i created my space.

Unfortunately it also means it never ends :)

Nice work with the chair:thumbup: I really love an old industrial furniture.

Great work with your workshop too:beer:

Thanks, I love industrial furniture too. Especially older stuff that you can see has lived a whole lifetime before you ever owned it.

A few more odds and ends I've done recently:

I love the Wall Control set up, but one problem I ran into was some of the tool holders were too big for my tools. Unless I set them in just right they would fall straight through.
01.jpg

So I designed some caps that would reduce the size to something more manageable
02.jpg

Then had the 3D printed by a guy I work with. They turned out perfect!
03.jpg

Still on the lookout for a pencil cup that fits.

Also worked my way through one more foam cut drawer
04.jpg

It may sound crazy, but I find sitting down and cutting these out for an hour very relaxing

I will take a bakers dozen of those wallcontrol plugs you made. Thank you in advance.

Haha, I would have gladly paid money for some if they had already existed!

Not crazy :bounce:

Feel you on the shed, I'm in the same boat, and sorely need to give it my attention.

Those 3D printed tool holders are pretty sweet.

Thanks Nick! Or maybe we just need more sheds :)

Thanks. I've only done renovation/repair so never really built anything from scratch like this. It's a 20 footer. Forgot to make the top plates longer to allow for overhang gable. Had to add 2x4 extensions, hah. My garage was better for a little while but back to a disaster after a clutch replacement.

Spent the weekend getting caught up on some maintenance and cleaning. I had been busy with work, and our front yard was starting to show the neglect. There is a house somewhere behind those trees...
01.jpg

They call this "rip rap" in Arizona. Ours has gotten totally full of tree refuse, cigarette butts, straw wrappers, princess stickers, etc.
02.jpg

In the end the only way to clean it out was the old fashioned way
03.jpg

I left the tree trimming to the professionals, but I'd like to think I supervised :)
04.jpg

Moving onto the forums namesake, mine was covered in an acceptable layer of sawdust from the 3 times I refinished the Toledo stool seat (There may still be a 4th)
05.jpg

But decided to give everything a wipe down
13.jpg

06.jpg

All cleared off wokspaces mean that for at least a 24 hour period I was caught up on projects

I've started a new project and decided it was time to update my thread. To summarize, I acquired a cheap Arrow shed from Home Depot for one penny due to a pricing error (I didn’t steal it) So the shed was quickly built, modified to meet HOA standards, and instantly packed full of all the garbage I didn’t know what to do with.

09.jpg

And thus people out walking their dogs would look into my garage with “Ohhhs & ahhhhs”. Little did they know the secret horror that was hidden just out of sight.

01.jpg

02.jpg

03.jpg

I definitely underestimated how often I would be using the shed, I thought maybe once or twice a month. But between Bikes, tools, storage and yard equipment it ended up being every other day. Finally last week, after spending 5 minutes moving things just to get my bike out I reached a breaking point.

My goals for the shed are to:
1. Maximize storage
2. Ease retrieval of common items
3. Find a way to cool it down
4. Make it look better, inside and for the love of Pete the outside
5. Turn whatever is left into another work space for secondary projects, etc.

Step 1 was to empty it completely

04.jpg

05.jpg

06.jpg

07.jpg

Here are my initial thoughts for the inside :

08.jpg

And you know how it goes, if it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing...

Looks familiar :lol::lol::lol:

It's always been my strategy for keeping my garage *relatively* uncluttered, and my dirty little secret -- throw it in the shed! But like you said it's oft-used and as such the bane of my wife's existence. Tripping over stuff to get to other buried stuff. (It does bother me, too).

It seems once a year I do a deep clean/organize and it always reverts to a mess.

But I have faith in you. Good luck and excited to see how this transforms.

Good to see this pop back up!!! I’ll be watching cause my shed is awful right now. I think I have stuff in there that hasn’t been touched in more than 5 years! Yikes!

Looking forward to what you come up with Joel. While the original intent of my shed was for storage I too saw the possibility of a secondary workshop and also for painting and putting a finish on projects.

4 years later and I am still finding ways to better organize and make the important stuff easy to retrieve.

Yeah it's been a while since I posted. My job changed and led to a lot less down time at my desk to post. Still been working on projects, I'll try to go back & post what I've been up to since then.

I think sheds by nature are awful :) but mine had reached into the unusable territory

Great progression. Love the bikes and a lot of the ideas you have. That clock looks great! What temperature gauge is that?

Thanks so much! The clocks were a lot of fun, I'm sure the shed will need one soon.

The thermometer I have is this one:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01H1R0K68/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I like that you can leave it for a few days and it will tell you the highest temp it recorded (or lowest in theory, not really an issue here)

I fixed the floor.
This will not be the most exciting post, but as it turns out was a lot bigger issue than I originally thought. In the before photo you can see the shelves are falling over, I thought this was due to the cheap plastic shelves compiled by water leaks warping the floor.

02.jpg

Once I pulled the plywood up I realized that ground squirrels had completely dug up the dirt beneath the floor beams. I replaced the dirt and put down some rat “deterrent” I also added bracing anywhere there was a plywood seam, and screwed the plywood down this time instead of letting it float. Also had some extra grey paint and rolled the floor.

02.jpg

03.jpg

Also added some 2x4s along the sides to use as wall anchors

04.jpg

You can see the evidence of the "haste" the shed was built in. I can't imagine why there are leaks... Progress is progress I guess, now I'm ready for the fun stuff.

Looking good! Keep up the progress! Yes we all have our dirty little messes. Ive got **** beside my garage, a mess between my 1st and 3rd bay and I should post up a few pics as we are all human. Ive got a vehicle half ripped apart on the lift, kids stuff all around.... A huge shed in the back yard that is mostly clogged up with my motorbike...
