Been wanting a second garage building for years. Detached. Somewhere I can weld and paint and test fire engines without filling the house with fumes. Many years and a move later I'm getting it. Not quite what I envisioned all these years. Was hoping for at least 2 car, maybe 20x30 but had to settle for 16x22 due to easements and SWMBO. Got a late start to the project this year. Here are some pics of current progress.

Had to get the shed out of the way. Engine hoist on one side, bobcat on the other.



Bobcat wasn't strong enough to lift the whole shed so we put the frame of my '56 Chevy 3200 under it.



Dragged it with the bobcat, got it turned around, and placed on the opposite side of the yard.

Clearing out the sod.



Trenching in progress for thickened edge slab.


Got some gravel down.


All formed up, rebar, remesh, vapor barrier. Forms are stepped front to back to maintain minimum 12" thickness and 6" depth. Thickened edge is 12" think on the front edge, 23" on the back with 2 steps between.


Concrete poured and hand finished. smooth as a baby's bum. My concrete guy did a hell of a job.

Worked all day until the thunder started. Got the 4th wall up, window rough openings done, squared up the building and got some of the top plate nailed down.

It's going to be a work/storage area for the 56 Chevy 3200 in the third pic of the first post. The chassis is under the shed and the front clip is back by the garden in the photo. Since I moved over 2 years ago the truck parts have been scattered at 4 different locations. This will help me get them all under one roof so I can start getting some work done on it.

Finished the top plate, got all the walls final nailed to sill, added some corners for drywall and threw on 5 sheets of osb. It was slow going on my own. I think the most time consuming part was cleaning the attached garage well enough to get the osb out.

Got some more sheathing up today. Had some help this morning then hours of nailing nailing nailing. Nearly ran out a brand new box of 1000 in my air nailer. It kept misfiring so that added to the time trying to make sure it was shooting nails then going back over nearly half that it left proud.

Tough getting anything done during the week with it being dark after work already and looking after the kids. Put in a good day's work yesterday with help from my dad and FIL. I played foreman/gopher while they handled the aerial business. I hate heights and ladders. We worked after dark with a dual halogen light and headlamps to light out way until it started raining. Simpson brand truss spacers were a life saver. Had I know how great they were I would have used twice as many. Still need to get hurricane ties on the trusses and finish nailing the gable truss sheathing and roof sheathing. It's just tacked for now.

Lured the men in the family over today with Halloween candy and pulled pork. Next thing you know the roof is done! Got the rest of the wall sheathing on also. Still need to put in ridge vent and cap shingles. Next up, a heavy duty cleaning inside and out.

Had no idea about the truss spacers. I've always just seen pieces of 2x4 nailed in place. I guess I could see them being helpful if flying solo

Thanks Mike, I think the original pic was too big it wouldn't attach in line or as attachment.

10' walls. 12 would have been ideal I think but I de ides to match the neighbor's which is just over the fence from mine

Yes, I will test-fire car engines haha I built a fun little test stand, you can see it in the video.

Been busy. Final building inspection and rough electric inspection have been completed. Going to start installing insulation and drywall until I get my hands on a trencher to run conduit out to it.

I haven't kept good track of all the odds and ends but here's what I do recall.
Lumber, windows, roofing, siding was 10,500
Man door was 150
Overhead door was about 500
2000 for concrete
400 in lumber for forms
1100 to have a buddy install the siding
Prob another 1000 in electrical
2000 for insulation and drywall

Lots of other odds and ends I didn't add up, oh and about 800 for a mini split.

The 2k was just for the concrete. The gravel and labor were gifted to me. I did all the labor except the pour and finish.

I fear the cost of concrete in my area right now, lol. I would diy it but the back is not nearly as young and capable as it was 10 years ago. Also I am unsure if I want to go with the idea of a permanent building or something that may not affect my taxes so much. I'm looking at using a building I can do dirty(ish) work in, like sand blasting, powder coating, wood work, and similar things that I wouldn't need a concrete foundation for overall. I'll figure it out by the time I get there I guess, lol. Thanks for the feedback.
