John's Toy Box----90x88 Build

Another new guy here. I have been lurking here for a few months getting ideas for my shop. This is one great forum!
I have been wanting a shop for years and I finally bit the bullet ( wish I would have done this 15 years ago).
I live in the boonies and it is hard to get anyone to come out here to do plumbing, electrical,construction, etc....
I finally decided on a company out of Kansas that does pole barns. I like the pole barns due to more options on finishing the inside walls, plus most of the barns on the ranch are pole or rock construction.

I originally started with a 60x56 with a 15 foot lean-to open to the inside. I soon realized that all my junk would fill that to capacity. I really need a place to have a couple of trucks torn apart and still be able to get other vehicles out.

My final decision was a 60x88x14 with two 15x88 lean-to's, both open to the inside. That makes a final 90' wide, 88' long, and 14' ceiling for the 60x88. The inside posts are 12' apart, which leaves plenty of room to back vehicles into the lean-to sides.

I also want an office that will measure 15x36. I really just needed a Man Cave. This will fill the bill, considering I only put 2 windows in!

The first picture is of the old shop. I have to do repairs to all the ranch equipment in this shop. That makes it hard to tear down my old trucks for long term projects. It has been hard to justify the cost of a new shop, but as my accountant put it "you're not getting any younger"!

The only picture I have of the inside of the old shop. It was built by my grandfather back in the 40's out of cinder block. It's very messy in this picture do to working on the mog. It is aproximately 25x35. Only room for one project at a time!

This is the spot I chose for the shop. It was not as flat as I thought!
I finally had a local friend bring his motor grader in to help.

I put over 60 hours on our skid loader on this little project!

Damn! I still haven't figured out how to get the pics to pop up big! I will work on it!

The material showed up about a week before the crew.
I had to get another skid loader to help unload the trusses! Even then it was not easy. I don't have any pictures, but you can imagine unloading 60' trusses off a trailer. We had to slide them down the side of the trailer and then get a good hold of them with both skid loaders to move them! I don't have any idea what they weighed, but it was a bunch!

The crew showed up on a thursday afternoon ( about the 10th of september, 2009) and they got all the holes dug and the posts set in the holes. It rained about an inch that night. Needless to say, it was a mess the next morning!

I could sure tell the low spots! I didn't haul in any gravel because we have pretty good dirt here! It packed down really good. I only had to build the low end up about 5 inches.

The back side is another story. It is cut into the bank about 4 feet below slope. We will be digging a good drainage ditch in the future!

It took 5 guys seven days to put this thing up! They worked from sunup to sundown. Unfortunatly, I had to work also, and I didn't get as many pictures as I would have liked. There were some minor mess ups that I will get to later!

The skidloader did make a mess of my many hours of leveling, but the job needed to get done. I was amazed how easily these guys put the trusses up!

I opted for the insulation package. They used the P2000 foam boards with foil on both sides. It was attached before they put the tin on. I was gone for all of this process and didn't get any pictures.

I wish I would have been here because they didn't seal the seams with the flaps like they were supposed to. I later had them come back and seal the seams with wide seam tape!

The barn was up in seven days. I did have them come back for a few minor details, but overall I was happy with the outcome! I should say I was happy as a puppy with 2 wieners!

I know---I **** at taking pictures and telling a story!

The office will be where the man door and two windows are. The garage doors are 14x12. The front one is off center so I can pull a motohome in without taking up too much space. The back door is mainly to let fresh air in during the summer. I centered it in the middle of the back wall.

I have a friend in the concrete business and he is from Albuquerque, which is about 4 hours away from here. He brought a crew up to form and pour the concrete. The closest concrete company is about 50 miles away.

It was quite a day pouring concrete. It took 155 yards which added up to about 20 trucks!

The first one showed up at 7 am and the last one left about 3 pm. All I can say is "Thank god for small pumper trucks"! A crew of 12 guy busted their butts getting this pour done.

The floor has wire mesh and is 6 inches deep. I have some deeper holes "24 inches" where the motor home will set on its leveling jacks and also where I am going to put a 2 post lift. These holes are reinforced with rebar.
The concrete is 3500 psi with fiber added.

The concrete crew left about 7pm after finishing the floor. I forgot to add that we also did a 15X40 porch at one of the ranch houses and a 20X30 driveway at another-------all in the same day! It was a total of 175 yards of concrete!

We also did an 18" apron around the edge of the barn to help with getting water away from the foundation. It all turned out really good!
I still feel like one lucky puppy!

I still need one more truck of crete to finish the slab out front, but that will have to wait a little longer.

My concrete friend had an electrician friend who wanted to trade out for a deer hunt. He has most of the outlets wired and is coming this week-end to put up some high bay lights. I am pretty happy-- a deer for all material and labor! Luckily, he is a perfectionist and is doing a great job of hiding all the wiring. I will have to get pictures later. The deer picture is the deer he is going to get. The picture is from last year--he is a 6x6 now!

I rented a joint cutter and put expansion joints every 12 feet. I wanted to put epoxy on the floor, but it would cost way too much. I am going to get some sealer and put it on next week.

The garage door guy finally came and put in two Martin insulated doors with one commercial opener. They turned out really nice!

This is the last of the shop pictures for now. I know I need to get some better pictures from a distance.

The last pictures show the sealing tape that is pealing off!
The barn crew ran out of the P2000 spec tape and used a generic brand that doesn't stick. Fortunately is was only used on about 10% of the seams. I am going to order the right tape and fix it myself. The electrician has a scissor lift, so it should be a breeze.

I can screw up my own stuff, but I don't think I would get away with wrenching on someone elses cars!

I know I have too many toys. My wife tells me that all the time!
We don't have any kids and we live in the boonies, so I do what I have to do!

I ordered a Bend Pac 10,000 pound 2 post lift and a good Quincy air compressor. I should have them here in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime I have to find some cheap cabinets and build a good work bench.

This is a busy time of the year for doing our cattle work ( weaning calves, shipping the yearlings, and preg checking cows ), so I may be a little slow on finishing the inside. I mainly want to get the floor sealed and start putting vehicles inside. The old barns that I use now have mice, bats, and birds which are not a good mix for my trucks!

I have to leave tomorrow to go to my nephews wedding in Nashville and won't be back until Sunday, so if I don't reply for a while, don't think I don't care!

Kevin54---yes, we did use a similiar pic for a Christmas card and yes I am a member at the 67-72 forum.

I know this thing is huge. I actually planned a 60X56X14 in the beginning, but my sweet wife said " you'd better make it big enough for all your stuff and not be too crowded"! Who am I to rufuse? Seriously, this build has gone over budget, so a few things, like the office and epoxy coating will have to wait.

On a good note, my lift arrived while I was gone. My nephew unloaded it for me. I can't wait to get this sucker up! I am going to wait untill I have the floor sealed, which is soon I hope.

I will post some more pictures as the progress continues.

I went real original at the 67-72 forum with "JRDV" as a screen name. I joined that site in 2000. It was one of the first forums I joined and probably the reason I am addicted to this damn computer! I usually don't post much, but do a lot of researching! That is a great site!

Chris--The company is VAP construction. The easiest way is to google them.
One note, they get their building material from BCI Barn Builders in Oklahoma.
You might save some money by buying the material yourself and finding someone local to put it up.

Thanks for the information. I was not aware of them. I have quotes from Esh Building, Morton Buildings and have a call in to BCI too. I'm shooting for a 40X100X16 myself.

It's been a while since I updated my progress.
I was wanting to epoxy the floor before I started hauling the junk in, but the cold weather caught up with me and the slab is too cold.
My next plan was to get the radiant tube heaters put in and warm up the concrete and do the epoxy. That didn't work out either, so I started putting stuff in.
I went to an auction and got some really good stuff.
I bought a beer....I mean coke machine for $200.

There was a display frame complete with all the angle iron, square tubing, flat iron, etc. I added up the prices and it came out a little under $2000.
I payed $200---what a steal!!

My next steal was about 50 foot of stainless countertops that I payed $450 for. I am going to build my work bench out of wood and use the stainless for tops.

I also got a really cool rolling workbench toolbox combo. I plan on sandblasting and painting it one of these days!

I also got a bunch of metal shelving and misc. other stuff.

Enough rambling--here's some pics. They are dark because I haven't got all the lights put up yet.
