Junkyard Score

I had to go to the U-Pull-It yard today to get a hood for a car I am working on. They had just dropped off a row of fresh cars right before I got there,so I stopped to look through them for goodies.

Found a large ACE-Professional phillips screw driver,then a perfect Indestro-Super chrome 12"-long 1/2" extension,and then in the trunk of another car I found a Husky 3/8"-drive socket set,a 1/4" Husky universal,and a broken Husky 3/8" ratchet. Made paying almost $90.00 for a hood and an inner bumper almost worth it..lol.

I've found wrenches, pliers,pry bars and even pretty nice hammers. I found a Kershaw pocket knife that I carry every day.

FYI,these were all found inside junked cars. Found a snap-On 9/16" combo wrench once too.

And about a year or so ago a guy "found" my long hard-handle pry bar as it was laying next to me while I was under a vehicle. I went to reach for it and was like WTF??? I get up and look and see him a few aisles down with it,I grab my stuff and go after him. He saw me coming and hid it somewhere,it still pisses me off to this day.

I have a friend who owns a lower end junk yard and i check things out every six months or so. I am amazed on how much personnel effects are still in cars that they tow in. I could fill a coffee can in a couple of hours. Ok, maybe that is an exaggeration. But tools other things and my friend passes these things up...

I really like the idea of trading. I have a lot of orphan truck brand tools and always need one or two to complete a set. Sooner or later I'm going to get a trading list and need list together and post it. The biggest stumbling block to that is I spend most of my time buying tools or checking out the next auction or CL. I seem to sell just enough to fund the next purchase and as long as I don't need the cash, my inventory grows. I'm trying to get a handle on it now, but I enjoy buying and the rest is just work.

I never grabbed tools because I assumed it belonged to the junkyard. But I've had people try to "Find" my tools as well. When I'm in a public environment,like a junk yard, I only bring what I can keep track of, or I carry a toolbox, and keep it closed. I got in an argument with someone once to get my 1/2" drive Mac ratchet back.

Unfortunately, there are not many u-pull it junkyards near me anymore.

We always take an extra person to watch the tools, I would be pissed. My brother in law takes this Makita 14.4V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Impact Driver that make a bunch of noise and people are always eyeballing it. Its over my junk yard tool price limit but it has a lifesaver so many times. I would be pissed if it was a no name tool or a snap on.

as far as tools in cars go, the junk yards I go to will charge you for anything you get out of the car. I say that if the object in question was not a part of the car its fair game.

I had a car that was hit hard in the back. totaled it
I had put a snap on on general service set under the spare tire just in case I need to fix something when traveling.
the trunk was crushed and the spare tire was jammed in there and looked like it would never come out.
I told the insurance company that they need to get it out or pay for it.
they had the tow service that had the car get it out

You must really like your prybar if your willing to go to jail for shooting someone for it. Knowingly stealing my prybar may deserve a good asskicking but I wouldn't shoot someone over it.

These kind of actions are exactly why it was so hard to get the Concealed Carry law passed. If the police showed up while you had the guy at gunpoint you more than likey would be the one in handcuffs. I hate thieves also but i would never pull my gun on anyone unless i felt my life or a family members life was in danger.

A lot of guys will try to justify it, but I guarantee if you asked the owner of the yard what he thought, you would be told it is their property and if you want it... you will pay for it. Tools are no different than any other non-standard "stuff" in the car. If you found a loaded Glock under the driver's seat and a bag of cash stashed under the console I can pretty much tell you it would not be "finders keepers".

Business owners don't exactly have a habit of giving things away for free - the fact they might not know about it doesn't make it any better.

Of course I'm sure someone will reply and say they have talked with the owner of X junkyard and was told it was perfectly fine etc etc.

I'd buy the car seat (contents included). Not so long ago I was at a police auction and a guy found a gun in a motorcycle compartment that needed the ignition on or the key in the ignition to open it.

I think its pretty common to misplace tools at Pick n pulls etc, Thats why most people execpt Merk take there lower end stuff to these places.

Had a guy back in the summer come up to me and he said I had his ratchet, I sat my ratchet down and looked him in the face and told him to F---off before I beat his ***. He left me alone after that.

There is a few down around St. Louis but definitely not within a hour of us. Have you ever been to the Yancey used parts house there in Columbia? Essentially that is what he is, He has a big junk yard Around Perry Mo and he is selling take off parts to people who dont want to mess with the whole hands on thing.

i usally take my "low end" tools to the junkyards, lot of those tools are CM, SK and a few truck brands. i sometimes stop on my way home from work in my service truck, i dont have any low end tools in the truck.
i hate loosing stuff anyway, even if it's a $2 HF screwdriver
