The lady and I work from home. We also have a bunch of kids. So we decided to build a 2 story garage, with office space on top. Unfortunately, the city didn't really like our idea, so we decided to fix what we have and make it into our moto haven. (We'll just have to deal with working in the house with 4 kids)
The bummer. We only have a 20x19 footprint to deal/live with. The problem: I have over 10 motorcycles and equipment to go in it.
Before...

Due to time constraints, I'm farming out the roof and siding. We wanted to keep the original lap, and only fix the bad pieces. But the more I got into it, the more it ended in the scrap pile.

We ordered the new siding, I got the place all plied, bought the Tyvek wrap and some outer layer, and now I'm sitting on my laptop, as it's been raining for two days and supposed to rain for at least two more. I can't work on the interior, as I'm waiting on the electrician to run wire, hook up the panel, then get inspected. After that, I'm getting my 18K BTU Mitsubishi unit installed. I must admit, I'm pretty excited about that.

While it's raining, I decided to do away with the garage door and install french doors. We're never going to get a car in there anyway. Now trying to find the rights doors. Did I mention my lady is a designer? It makes it tough...

Man, things are going slower than I had hoped. Though I've learned a bit along the way. Planning is key! We didn't know what we wanted to do for doors. By the time we decided, we found that it would be three weeks before we'll receive them. They'll be in early next week. Anyone have any tips for hanging french doors? I better continue my research.

The windows came in today, so I got one hung. Unfortunately, it was after dark. The electrician is set to come on Monday. Debating on siding around his work, or putting him off until I get the new man door hung and siding finished.

The siding in the back and other side is complete. Just waiting on getting the windows and doors in.

I think this is the happiest this garage has made me in a while.

I've seen several dedicated motorcycle garages over the years with French doors. I recommend doors with vinyl or aluminum skin. From experience I know that bare wood will not hold up in your climate. Nice project. Keep the pictures coming. We like pictures!

I opted out of the wood and got some sort of composite doors from Jeld Wen. Like everything else, they should look pretty sweet from the street.
The lady hates all of this "maintenance free" stuff. She's pumped that I get to paint the doors...

Anyone have any ceiling or wall material recommendations? I don't know that I want to use drywall. Possibilities are, corrugated metal ceiling and sanded plywood.

I spent my Sunday digging this 27" trench. My contractor was nice enough to spend part of his Sunday delivering the trencher. Don't know what that will cost me.

Man, I've learned some lessons while doing this. Admitting, I don't know anything about how building codes go, etc. I dug the shortest path, not thinking that this eye sore was going to be in front. Once I get my final inspection, it'll find it's way around the corner. Too bad I'll have to fix the siding, and it's at the bottom...
I need to dig a french drain anyway.

The inspector comes tomorrow. Once they approve my "drawrings" for the french doors, I'm framing that mug up! I still can't believe I can't run any of the wire to meet code. I have to pay a licensed electrician to run all of electrical. I'm no Rockefeller.

Man, I need a planning manager on this project. For I am out of sequence.

ya the electrical is a eyesore. I gave mine little thought and just set a wooden frame around it, you can do better than that.
The rest of the project looks great. You saved the building!

Welcome Aboard!

That garage has already won the hearts and souls of all who have seen it. That building is a real gem. You have a nice job ahead of you, and you will be so happy with it when it is done. One of the "most watched" areas of the Garage Journal is seeing sweet older buildings saved and redone to live again in their beauty. We will all be closely watching this one!!

Thanks for restoring your building!!

Best Regards

Opinions? How do I put 20 pounds of **** in a 10 pound bag?
I still haven't added the two lifts.

You use every square inch you can and when that doesn't work lube it and push hard. LOL. Key to that is to use every inch you can and look to put things out of the way. Rafters or attic space, going vertical with one rim shelf around the top of the walls to put stuff not used and keeping stuff all on casters so you can tweak your layout as needed.

Thanks for the kind words. It's going to be pretty sweet when finished. Unfortunately, only half the size I'd like. I can't wait to get started on the inside.

I have some attic space, but it's REALLY limited. I decided that means I'm going to part with everything that isn't necessary. Like old Honda parts...

Well, I'm going to have to adjust my drawing. This thing is going to take up more space than I had allocated. But that's ok! Sure hope I can learn to run a CNC...

Nice looking mill.

When you hire your electrician ask him how much of the job you can do. The guys I work with allow me to run the circuit cable subject to their inspection, makeup boxes and wire in switches and outlets, all typical tasks for an electrical apprentice. They pull the permit, layout the circuits, and make the service connections. I can do more but the responsible electricians set the limits.

In our jurisdiction individuals building homes for themselves can do their own wiring if they pass a test administered by the building inspectors. Check to see if you have a similar option. Good luck!

How close to Indy are you? Early in 2010, I was there for business. While looking through the local Craigslist for vintage moto stuff, I came across the vintage bike night listing at the Steer Inn. After checking it out, the next month, we had our first bike night and get over 200 vintage bikes a month. A good time!

Got all of the insulation up on the ceiling. It took me two days. My arms are all bumpy and I'm crabby.

I got the Mitsubishi split installed this week. Even without all of the insulation up, I'm already surprised at how well this works. I'm guessing I can thank the housewrap and the R1.0 exterior stuff. I can't wait to get the walls and ceiling up.

It's been a while since I posted an update. I've been busy, but unfortunately not working on the garage as much as I would like. I wasted a month while waiting on the city to grant us a permit to frame up my doors... Prior to installing the doors, I took the opportunity to load this in. I'll NEVER move a large piece of equipment any other way!

Once I satisfied all of the city's requirements, we put these up. Since the structure is a bit racked up, we had to get creative.

I'm currently waiting on the exterior lights we ordered. I tried to do the right thing by buying local and got hosed. Over three weeks later and still no goods. The lady and I will paint the doors and all of the trim that she deems necessary. I need the lighting to finish the electrical, then get all of my inspections, except for the final.

Man, I haven't updated this in a while. I can't believe I'm 10 months in to this project and not quite finished. But I'm close! A little touch-up paint work, then install the floor. After that, I'm going to have some fun!

It looked like this for quite a while, as I worked on the interior.

Some friends came over and helped with the ceiling. If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't use this stuff. It turned out fair, but not great.

I was so desperate for help, the lady gave an impromptu performance. Yes, she should be wearing eye protection...

I was pumped on getting the lights installed. Small victories.

Mmph, I gotta do something about that wonky baseboard. I painted part of it the same color as the wall, except in semi-gloss.

I'm enjoying my free Art Metals desk and near matching AM chair I bought off of CL. I better either drink a beer or get back to work.

I for one am glad you were forced by the city to use the same building. It may not have the office space, but it really is a keeper of a structure, and a great tribute to an something that had a forgotten life before it's current one!

That desk is pretty awesome too ;-)
