Congrats....I learned basic welding at a trade school years ago, and I have thought about going back to relearn what I've lost...One day I will....Just don't set yourself on fire like I did when I first started...

That looks pretty nice. If you are learning stick welding, do yourself a favor and buy a pair of welders sleves to protect your forearms. I have a pair made by BMX and they take the pain out of welding. A good pair of welding gloves are a good idea also. The website says he provides the gear, but bringing your own beats using someone elses stuff.

If you haven't already got one, get an "auto-darkening welding helmut". It makes welding so much easier and better.

I found the stick welding bead after bead so dull after a few minutes that I was ready to start welding pieces of equipment together. Now MIG welding got my complete attention. I really like Miller's. They seem easier for the first timer to get the settings right.

I wish we had some sort of welding class around here. the ones I have found locally are all geared to cerifying professional wleders and are few and far between, enjoy looks like fun.

Hey, if the cost is nominal, take the class. Even certified welders have to start somewhere. I took classes at the local college and most there were in it for a career. That didn't mean that I couldn't weld as good as some and better than a few.

yeh I would like to, the problem is they are during the day for students that are full time. My job unfortunately would get in the way........

Always wanted to do this. My first project will be to build a frame to hold firewood. From there, who knows?

In Houston, from Leasure Learning. Here is a link...

Wow, thanks for pointing this out. I have been looking at taking a welding class at Lonestar college. This is only a 5 hour class. Is that really enough time to cover everything they mention in the syllabus? Please let me know what you thought of this class. Thanks!

I just signed up for one as well! I should be able to fix nearly anything :D

Welding Adventure (Mount Vernon Campus)
If you would like an introduction to the craft of welding for hobby or ornamental purposes, or if you’re experienced welder who wants to upgrade skills or practice for welder certification, this class has something for you. Instruction is available in a variety of processes including stick, wire, gas, and tig. Bring your welding hood, welding gloves, slag hammer, wire brush and pliers and join us for these hands-on welding sessions. Must wear appropriate sturdy cotton clothing, safety glasses, and high top leather shoes.

Six weeks of 5:30 - 9:30 pm on tuesdays. First class is the 10th. I just need a hood, goggles, jacket and gloves, which I'll be picking up tomorrow. There are still 8/15 seats available, I'm looking forward to the substantial amount of available instructor time.

I took an auto restoration course about 25 yrs ago. In part of it we learned how to hammer weld - O/A torch only, no rod. Best course I ever took.

I am not a welder and don't understand the lesson; what makes this a "teaching moment"?

Seriously; I'm not a welder, but have been wondering about this.
Does this reinforce an important welding concept?

Yes if you plan on being a welder you are going to have to concentrate on what you are doing and not what is going on behind you. Plus if you are that thin skinned you may want to work or hang with a slightly more feminine crowd. Plus it is just hilarious!

I think the 'teaching lesson' is mostly for the amusement of the instructor. But I will say it takes some getting use to not being able to see around you. I work in ship repair and it is unnerving to be completely blind to everything around you because there is so much going on in the ship yard.

The first time i arced that steel with the metal rod it makes a very cool/ wicked sound of heat and power fusion goodness. and in my mind i was thinking wow im controlling all that in my hand it felt good to harness that power....than BOOOOM. Its an eye opener heart stopper. It was my initiation into the world of welding.

I actually know the guy that teaches it; he was an artist-in-residence for a year at my last job. I've been considering taking that same class for a while now.

Yeah, you'll use a lot more consumables than that. When you start buying stuff for the home shop you'll know what I mean.

Don't forget to turn off the gas or you won't have any. That's one expensive lesson.

I took a beginning welding class and I got so tired of stick welding just long lines of bead after bead after bead. I finally got through that went to auto wire feed Mig. Speed went up dramatically. I'm still not a welder I would risk my life on but I know enough to know when my weld sux.

I'm going to buy a new home welder and I'm looking at a Miller 211. This is all for automotive work so I don't think there's a piece of metal on it too thick for it to handle. Some of the sheet metal is so thin anymore burning holes in it is more of a concern than a poor weld holding it two pieces together.

That looks great. I've been slowly looking for something similar in So Cal. I'm with a lot of people in that what I have found tends to be a full time program or during the day.

I'll find one eventually.

Good luck with yours. Hope you enjoy it.

Cerritos College offers all of their classes both day and night. Long Beach City College has a brand new lab and has night classes as well. People come from miles to these schools.

If you're not near those schools, check out LA Trade Tech. If you're out in the Inland Empire, well I don't know as some guys were driving in from Riverside to go to LBCC when I was there.
