So guys actually stop you just for a calendar, without dealing with you before or wanting to buy anything? I like free stuff as much as anyone but I don't think I ever could stop a working guy just to beg for a free calendar and not at least buy something for taking up his time. :headscrat

Well since your on here can you send me one please? Just kidding!!! :lol_hitti

I dont think Chad or Shaun would have a problem giving a calendar to a regular customers. I believe he is referencing the guys off the street who have never purchased anything from them before.. Everybody wants something for Nothing.

I don't blame the walk-up guys. To them you are the only face of Snap-on they get to see for whatever reason.

I can't speak for the snap on dealers but if I was in there shoes and a COMPLETE STRANGER comes up and asks for something for free I would not give it to them, even if I am "the only face of snap-on" to them. Now if they came up and asked to look at some tools and bought something I would think about giving them something to try and get them to buy more in the future.

I just don't see how a guy that never buys any new snap on stuff could walk up to a driver and beg for free stuff. I would at least buy something before asking for anything.

The dealers pay for this stuff out of their own pockets and give it to their regular customers as a thank you for spending money with them threwout the year. Not to hand out to complete strangers they will never see again, might as well just give the money they spend on the stuff to the salvation army or something then!

Many years ago things like ball caps were still considered "advertising," and lots of companies tried to give these items away to folks, in order that they might wear them, and spread around the brand name for very little cost. Farmers were often given hats with seed brands, tractor logos, etc on them, in my earliest memories of this strategy. But over recent generations, items like logo'd ball caps have been offered for sale to consumers, and for whatever reason, people actually pay for them, :wtf: Then they wear them around, advertising someone else's brand names ; actually spending money to do so. :headscrat Young people buy Nike T-shirts, etc, which are just regular T-shirts with someone's brand on them, and pay MORE for them than if that exact same T-shirt had been blank.

I'm in the advertising field, and I produce brand names for people for a living. I find it amazing that people want to step up and BUY those logos and brand names!

For Mr Shaun and Chadster, I certainly understand their point of view. They have to pay Snap On for those calendars, ball caps, etc. So why would they give them away to folks who are not good customers? Indeed, I have always felt that holiday gift-giving should be a two-way street. Most of us normally don't expect to receive gifts from folks that we would not expect to give gifts to. But in my small business, I am a good customer to several businesses, and some of them send small gifts of appreciation our way. Conversely, those suppliers are valued "partners" in a sense, and so we often send small gifts their way too.

Strange world, I guess. Once again, I am the dinosaur here; heading to extinction from a world I cannot seem to adapt to.

I want a free calender, hat & pocket screw driver from both you guys. But only if you have free shipping.:shocking:

I would tell any non customer when I get an unlimited supply of free stuff I will hand it out like candy. Some people probably assume the Snap On corporate gives dealers a few hundred free.:lol_hitti

Catalogs are the only thing Snap-on give the dealers for free.

I'd probably get some cards printed with a link to SO's logo'd merchandising website and hand those out when a stranger asks for a trinket.

I had a brother and cousin that farmed some 10 thousand acres of dryland wheat. They did the tilling with Cats. Cat was one of the first to stop giving out hats ans start selling them. Cousin went in to buy 3 new D5a's to replace the old D6's. He worked with the salesman over a few weeks and finally arrived at a price. As he set down to sign the papers he had one more request, and the salesman 'bout melted. He said to seal the deal he needed a case of summer and a case of winter hats. He got them and all the men on the ranch got new hats.

That situation is a little different than some Joe Blow coming to a Snap-on truck and asking for a free hat or calender.

If I sold SO tools, I wouldn't be too crazy about having to buy promotional items just to turn around and give them away to non-customers.

That said, I'd make damned sure I kept PLENTY of hats, mugs, pocket screwdrivers, calendars, etc. around for my faithful customers. The whole SO "business model" is on shaky enough ground as it is without ******* off the customer base.

Chad & Shaun, you're also forgetting about the guy at a shop that refuses to talk to you because he only deals with ________ tool company. You know the guy that I'm talking about, you say hi to him & he'll turn around & walk the other way to avoid you. You give him something to try & make a customer out of him & don't even get a "thank you". I dare you to not give him something next year, you'll never hear the end of it. He'll even have the balls to tell everyone that he was your best customer till then!

....and the guy that pays you $20 a week when you catch him. He gets upset that he does not get the same thing as the other guy in the shop that pays $100 a week like clockwork.

Just out of curiosity, what do you sell the snap on hats and calendars for? I would put a little price tag on it, and let them see it, as you give them away to your good customers.

Do you walk into Home Depot and ask for free stuff?

I walked into Home Depot not too long ago and they gave me a free Ridgid hat. :bounce:

I suspect that most of the people who ask just assume that SO sends these to the dealers to give out as free promo items. It used to be such common practice...

On a slightly related topic, I've found that emailing sales/customer service of lots of companies can result in a nice hat/calendar/stickers/etc. Most appreciate a note saying how much you enjoy their products. I sent one to PB last year telling them how many knuckles PB Blaster had saved and asked if they could hook me up with a couple of stickers for my tool box... They sent me a whole case of mixed products and a cool hat and a letter from the president thanking me for my business.

I sent a similar note to Snap-On. They told me to contact my local dealer for a sticker.

Yes its a different situation, but still a good story. Better one is one of the local loggers broke a skidder. This guy was a big operator but also got out on the mountain and got dirty. So he drives ~80 miles to Portland to the Cat dealer (Pape) to get another one. It was a cold day and he went into the showroom, muddy boots and coveralls and went to the coffee pot. One of the young salesmen informed him that this was for cutomers and there was a shelter down the road. Well the logger walked into the office and ask one of the owners if he could have the boy for the afternoon. He hauled to boy up to the top of his mountain and explained that all the timber he could see was his. He did buy a skidder from the kid and the boy learned to not judge a book by its cover.

If you go into Napa, Peterbuilt, Freightliner, Caterpillar...they all have hats and calenders for sale and get them sold
If I wanted a hat or calender and was told they are for sale for "X" dollars, I pay it and get what I want
"Sorry, I don't have any free calenders..but I do have them for sale"

It works at Harbor Freight

Seriously I started asking for discounts and freebies a long time ago. I never expect it, and I'd never flag someone down to ask. It's mostly a joke, and has only worked a few times. Got an employee discount at Texas Roadhouse just by asking once. Got a discount on a torpedo heater for my garage because it was too big. I wanted the 55K BTU and they only had the big one (180k?, 150? not sure). Asked for a few bucks off, he marked it from $398 to $150. I woulda been happy with $350. The price tag and his correction are still on it for proof, lol. That was at Lowes. So anyway, my point is, it never hurt me to ask, but it has helped.

I use to pay 1200 dollars a month for a radio spot, whats your point? Are Snap-On dealers suppose to be free of advertizing? I mean you are a business owner

If I was a truck dealer and someone walked on the truck for something free I would tell them they are x dollars or free if you buy something. Might be a good way to get a new customer and sell something.

I'm fairly cheap and like deals and free stuff but would never just walk up to a stranger and ask for something for free.

Thats their store policy, same with HD. Many people don't know, but if they are out of a certain item, and you ask, they have to give you the next item UP and the same price as the item you were asking for.
