K60/K200 value?

I just found a K60/K200 combo... it's in pretty good shape... no bad damage, paint worn to the point of needing repaint, but it's complete and solid.
The guy is asking $600 per half, which seems a tad high to me.
Okay, $1,200 for a vintage box that needs to be restored, in this economy, seems a LOT high to me. But I'm a cheap *******, so I don't really know!

What are these going for these days?
I've got a set already, but it needs a full restoration, including making one new door and replacing the piano hinge. (warped from brazing)

Thinking on it... I've outgrown my Craftsman box, and two of these K60/K200 combos would probably be enough to meet my tool storage requirements!
But I don't want to pay $1,200 for a box that needs to be restored, especially if that's top dollar.

Thoughts?

(and no, sorry, no pics at this time)

I would not restore it, its worth more as is. Prices have gone down, maybe 600-800 depends on if its a early one. post a pic.

I missed that combo at auction about three months ago. The particular one I missed was factory grey and full of misc. tools went for 450$, i was in to 425$, and that seemed a bit high. Same box showed up on eBay that weekend and the guy thought he'd double his money, a week later my bid was the high one at approx. 150$ But nowhere near the reserve. Neat boxes, I want one, would have gone to 450$ for one needing touched up but not much more.

Funny, where are you located by chance? There was one up for sale a few days ago that we discussed. On the west cost.

My opinion is that although they are super cool and neato. Unless you are a collector I personally don't think they are worth the $ they seem to typically go for. If you plan to use them as daily use tool storage, honestly I think that is a poor idea. Kinda like having a model T as a daily driver. No way I would pay $800, let alone half that, cause to me they just are not worth it. But YMMV just depends on what you are looking for. A super cool rare old too box, well look no further, but if you are looking for something to use as a tool box on a routine basis, I wouldn't. Just my 2¢

BTW, I'm not quite convinced that they are as valuable as some seem to think they are. Yes you see them for sale for a pretty hefty sum of cash, but I haven't seen many actually sell. IDK. How much did you pay for the one you already have?

After looking at the pics, I personally think those prices are high. The boxes look pretty rough. I have a feeling you are going to find a lot of hidden rust. Looks like it is one of the later ones that has drawer slides, which is nice as it makes it more of a usable box. IDK, it has OBO, you could always try making an offer after an in person inspection if you are truly interested in them. I have a feeling they won't be getting a new home in the near future unless the seller wants to come down quite a bit. Never know. Also the camera date is kinda questionable. I wonder how recent those pics are? :dunno: A lot can happen in 8 months.

Hello All,
I'm the guy in question of the K60/200 combo. Have read all of your posts and can understand why ya'll feel/say it's not worth it. But let's look at it from a different point of view. Most of you have the same boxes and you probably have some issues with yours as well(i.e, needs restoring, painting, metal work, etc). So what kind of value do you put on yours?
I have done a bit of research on these boxes, different sites, people, etc. And have had many different answers. some good some bad. Even noticed on this site as well where some say they are not worth but a couple of hundred to Man, you have struck gold! As far as the pics being questionable, i'll admit at the time the pics were took i had junk all over my garage. sorry i'm human. they were taken Feb. 2013. I've taken some better ones today and in the middle of getting them loaded. Hope it goes alright. Otherwise go to my profile and take a look at the album..
As far as the rust issue, some surface rust, but most 90% is painted. They do need repainted, i agree. But all in all I feel it is a fair price($1200) considering the age, 68 years.
I've seen all kinds of things in far worse shape go for better money.
I do use the boxes now, as they are in good working order,.

Your pics showed up small because you have the html code for thumbnail pics. Hope you don't mind, but here they are larger (I edited the code). the "&thumb=1" you have on the images make them display as a thumbnail and not full size.

As for the price, it sounds like we offended you and your boxes, that was not mine or anyone else's goal. In the end something is worth what someone is willing to pay for them. Only time will tell if you will be able to sell them for $1200. There was a set for sale the other day, in better condition for $550. Quite honestly that boxes are pretty rough for a collector, have a few extra holes and there is no such thing as surface rust. Sorry. They will have the most "collector" value as is since they are original. As Snapmom said above and she really is an expert on the very old boxes. As soon as you repaint or modify those boxes collector value and draw goes out the window. If you want the absolute highest dollar for your boxes ebay is going to be the best bet because it will give you the widest audience. However realize you may have to ship them. CL pretty much land locks you to local sales and thus limited market, limited market usually means lower sell price.

Would you mind providing us with the background story on your boxes. How long have you had them? Where did they come from? Original owner? Regardless of price, they are still super cool boxes with alot of history behind them.

thanx for the help on pics, i'll try to remember that.
I bought these boxes from one of my employers way back in the early 80's, don't remember how much i paid for them. Knowing me prob not much. They have been on several different jobs with me as well as the Mac/Cornwell boxes i inhiereted from my late father. I rebuild big rigs.
as far as any rust, there is none. like i stated earlier, just some on the surface where the paint has come off. all the metal is still there, I have checked. I'm not really wanting to sell them, but due to bills adding up, I figured I could raise enough $$ to keep us afloat. And no I wasn't offended, just defending..

To Brad54,

I want to thank you for bringing this to my attention. I have tried on numerous occasions to secure these two boxes and I have finally come to terms with the owner. I think GaAks13 has a great tool box set and which I consider as a classic example of the best pair of boxes put out by Snap On. Maybe not the most useful but classic nonetheless.

I look forward to adding these to my collection and again thanks for raising the flag and helping out a fellow member.

Excellent! Glad they're going to a good home.
I'd have REALLY liked to add it to my shop, but just couldn't justify spending that much money on something I really don't "NEED" at this time.

Congrats on the score--I think it's a good set of boxes, and in very good condition.
