Hah, you got one Mike? I don't know if I'd buy one, just curious about them :D

I don't think that's what he means Kaz!

I think he means he's a Stud-welder!:lol_hitti

BTW, can you pm me a price for one of those round family crest type signs? I'm starting to like them.

bullnerd, you will love that sign. I got one from kaz and my wife and I thought it was as nice as any we had ever seen. He does great work.

Finished up the yoga studio sign the other day and delivered. Damn I need a burnisher.

Thanks.

Yea the Metabo burnishers are nice. I did the yoga sign with a belt sander and hand work. Probably have been worth getting the Metabo but just didn't want to drop the six bills right now. I think it will be worth it though. The other thing I really want is a Dynafile.

I've gotten buy without for a while.

In high school I made a small fortune polishing. Knew a guy that did nothing but bumper work for ford and he would do all my plating after I did the polishing. Learned allot about surface finishing from him. He didn't like custom polishing work but would plate anything I polished.

A die grinder setup for roloc is my favorite and most versatile tool when it comes to surface finishing with a minimal investment.

Might still happen. I just got a small shop spot with my buddy. All my machining stuff will move to the shop and the plasma and welding will stay at home. So I should have more room for a fab table. I bought a 2x3 from tab and slot, but have just been so busy with stuff I haven't had time to assemble it yet. Not ideal but should be good for most small to medium stuff.

Awesome work on everything. I love coming to this thread and seeing the projects you are working on.

Is that a belt surface grinder? How is the accuracy? Is it a commercial unit or did you build it?

Tell us more about the knife kaz...

Knife is the same design as the one I built before, just a little more planned this time. The last one I ground entirely by hand. These were cut out on a waterjet to start, which saves time not having to band saw and grind. I'm also experimenting with milling the bevels instead of grinding them. Leaves a nice plunge line and easy to keep consistent.

I built a fixture to locate the blades. I used 1/4" shoulder bolts for location and retention. I just drill and ream the handle holes to .250 and then have three holes on the fixture so the blades can be flipped. I pick up the centerline and use the DRO.

The blade is CTS-XHP, started out at roughly .287 from a plate I bought. They are about .260 after grinding. Shooting for .250 when done. Need to finish the milling and then will send them out for heat treat. Should end up around 62 rockwell.

Yes, it's a belt surface grinder - 2x72. The accuracy is actually really good and changing belts is extremely quick. It's perfect for 90% of the stuff I would need like surfacing these blades. I don't anyone really makes a unit (mainly because surface grinders vary so much, it would have to be tailored to the grinder you want to use). This isn't my grinder, my buddy built it, but it's awesome.

I sold a Kent surface grinder I had a little while been. Been casually looking around for a wet, hydraulic, automatic unit. Manually grinding *****. It's just tedious after a while...but I have to admit, the level of accuracy gets addicting. It's fun. Plus the surface finishes you can get are awesome.

Does 1/4" seem a little thick for it? Maybe the pictures just make it look thick. The one im doing is 5/32. And hows the CTSXHP metal? Im using o1 tool steel.

I'd stab someone for a surface grinder and a belt grinder to bevel. Mine is by hand with files. Its fun though!

It's all personal preference. I just wanted a burly fixed blade. CTS is an air hardening stainless. Holds a really good edge, and seems to hold shape really well after heat treating. I've made some other tools out of O1, but not a knife. You could piece together a 2x72...they are super handy.

Very nice... You in production on them?

Out of curiosity, what are you selling them for?

They remind me of a few nice blades. I can't remember the name of the exact one they make me think of but I drooled over it for a while but never could convince myself to pull the trigger on one.

Thank you sir.

It's a small run. 20 that will be for sale and a few extras for experimentation for myself and setup. At this point, I think they will be around $225. But I might also do some upgraded ones and offer them for more. See how it goes.

Nice work, there, Kaz. Congratulations to you and Mrs. Kaz and the new BIG brother. This may be your best work of late.

Congrats kaz... After reading your build thread so many times and seeing the birth of your other son happen in there it's kind of surprising to see how big he is now. lol

So true^^ And time will fly by even faster now with two children. Seems like just yesterday that I was pushing my little guy around in a stroller. Now he's 6'5", weighs 220 and he's just finishing his junior year of high school.

BTW, hold them back a year before starting school. Best advise that we ever received.
