Tell us more about the knife kaz...
Knife is the same design as the one I built before, just a little more planned this time. The last one I ground entirely by hand. These were cut out on a waterjet to start, which saves time not having to band saw and grind. I'm also experimenting with milling the bevels instead of grinding them. Leaves a nice plunge line and easy to keep consistent.
I built a fixture to locate the blades. I used 1/4" shoulder bolts for location and retention. I just drill and ream the handle holes to .250 and then have three holes on the fixture so the blades can be flipped. I pick up the centerline and use the DRO.
The blade is CTS-XHP, started out at roughly .287 from a plate I bought. They are about .260 after grinding. Shooting for .250 when done. Need to finish the milling and then will send them out for heat treat. Should end up around 62 rockwell.
Awesome work on everything. I love coming to this thread and seeing the projects you are working on.
Is that a belt surface grinder? How is the accuracy? Is it a commercial unit or did you build it?
Yes, it's a belt surface grinder - 2x72. The accuracy is actually really good and changing belts is extremely quick. It's perfect for 90% of the stuff I would need like surfacing these blades. I don't anyone really makes a unit (mainly because surface grinders vary so much, it would have to be tailored to the grinder you want to use). This isn't my grinder, my buddy built it, but it's awesome.
I sold a Kent surface grinder I had a little while been. Been casually looking around for a wet, hydraulic, automatic unit. Manually grinding *****. It's just tedious after a while...but I have to admit, the level of accuracy gets addicting. It's fun. Plus the surface finishes you can get are awesome.
