This has been occupying space in one of my tool drawers for many years. Will it be worth big bucks someday :dunno: or should I just toss it in the trash?

3 weeks from now, someone you know will clean out a house or barn and sure enough there will be 2 or 3 cases of canned oil and offer to give them to you.

Then again, maybe not.

mark it with a $50 price tag and put it back in the drawer. When you have passed to the great garage in the sky, someone at your clean out estate sale will think they have found gold.:beer::lol_hitti

I have two of those, and probably a case or more of the canned oil they worked on. I even have some canned transmission fluid.
I also have a case of r12 refrigerant, and two fill hoses.....

Every time I see one of those listed on Ebay, I am reminded of how many thousands of those things we sold - anywhere from 39 cents up to $6.99 a pop. I always wonder where they all ended up, since they are essentiall useless now.

I am in full agreement with JRC3 just above.

At a family reunion we played a "Guess what it is?" game. There was a row of cardboard boxes with a hole just big enough to reach in and feel of the item inside. You had a clipboard with a sheet of paper to write down your guesses. There was a good mix of items, old and new. Some of the young folks knew what the oil spout was and some of the old folks knew what a thumbdrive was.

It would be a cool thing to have for sure. I have many tools I don’t use anymore or never have used that I just collect.

I've got two. A smaller one and a normal sized one. And I sometimes come across canned oil NOS.

If it isn't taking up too much room, keep it.

I think you should keep,it,
Hang it on the fence outside and let it rust.
As things get older, the rustier they are the more people think they are worth....

Toss it.
They leak.
Then be on the lookout for one that has the integrated funnel.
While it has been quite some time since I used one, as I recall, they did not leak, if used properly.
My father used them much more than I, he had 4 cars, and changed the oil himself in them all twice a year. Didn't leak for him, either.

Here ya go, speaking of illegal: he poured the old oil along the fenceline, to keep grass from growing there. He could just mow right next to the fence, and be done.
Imagine doing that, today...........

My dad would mix used motor oil with gasoline and use that to keep electric fences clear of weeds.

I'll probably be arrested for even remembering that!

not real common any more.

but..............go to an airport. lots of jet oil comes in quart cans yet. i don't know the exact reason but i believe it has something to do with contamination. once a can is it opened it must be used right away and if not any oil remaining in the can must be discarded.

somebody must know more about than me but it is still readily available ot at least it was last time i wan at my local warehouse a few years back. the had stacks of cases in cans. maybe someone who know more will clarify this.

Antifreeze also came in round gallon cans, and we used the spouts. I still have one hanging in the garage.

I remember, in that era, used oil (sorta recycled?) in glass containers and the oil looked bluish. If you dripped a quart of oil in 500 miles you really weren't in the market for primo or even good oil.

IIRC they were on the ground outside gas stations in wooden coca-cola boxes with dividers for 24 bottles.

Rear breaks on my Saturn are drum... and I still use my old craftsman timing light and dwell meter on my Harley....

That spout makes me think of this. Yeah, I remember trying to pour that cold syrup from an un-squeezable can. I used to joke about using an oil can spout on the Hershey can.

The regional airline I worked for bought oil by cases, and its all in cans. You are correct about having to use it all or discard the leftover oil. Most engines use about 3-5qts per day of flying.
