Monday - Assembled and raised wall section with door header.
Tuesday - 2' of sheathing around 3 sides.
Wednesday - mowed grass and had evening meeting, so no work.
Thursday - final 4' of sheathing on long wall.

Got a little more sheathing up Saturday and bought some more lumber.

Trusses and LVLs came today. I was also able to assemble the wall with my 18' header. Will be asking my neighbor to stand it up with his backhoe.

Planning to set trusses and at least start sheeting the roof over the 3-day weekend.

I've never stick built anything more than a shed, so: please explain how you join each 10' wall section. I'm assuming studs nailed to a 10ft bottom and top plate, then the whole assembly lifted up and set plumb, but now what? What do you do to attach the next 10ft wall section to the first one?

Fabulous build BTW, and what an amazing location. No visible neighbors! I hear you about wanting more land. My 2.2 acres is about 8 acres too small!

I built the walls in 10' sections, raised and braced each section, and attached the second top plate (staggered from the first).

You could also stagger the top and bottom plates and raise it all at once, but for a 60' wall would be a challenge to lift over the anchor bolts even with several people.

A third option would be to use strand lumber which you can get in long lengths, but again you need to lift it over the anchor bolts.

Awesome picture, you need to make an 8x10, frame and hang that in the bldg.

That's a great idea. I've been so focused on capturing the progress that I haven't looked at the art value of the photos. Been using my DSLR because I don't really have to try to take a decent picture where my iPhone is hit and miss and the quality is just **** compared to the DSLR. I guess mexapixel ratings on phones are about like HP ratings on shop-vacs.

Back to the idea. I have some wooden garage door panels that i saved and made this for my brother after we did a trip to the smokies together.

Should make one of this build.

Thanks for the kind words. The bike is my Brother's. It is the Eddie Lawson edition. I met him in the smokies in my car (Mazdaspeed3) and we had some serious fun.

Yesterday my neighbor came with his backhoe and set my 18' header.

Today I had several friends come help set trusses. Just a little bit warm today, so it was set a truss, stop for a bottle of water and then set another truss. The forklift seems to be working quite well for the job though it may get interesting toward the end. We got 10 trusses set plus the end-wall and some decking in the attic, and have 11 more plus another end wall to do.

Here are a few pics of the process:

BTW, I know I don't have enough trusses to do the whole building. You'll have to wait and see or if you're clever enough, you may be able to figure it out.

Wow, I wasn't expecting this. I was figuring regular trusses not a gambrel style truss. It looks good.

My guess, the other trusses will allow a full ceiling height for the use of a lift.

2-man crew today. We got the rest of the trusses set.

I'm hoping to build the remaining section of wall tonight and get that up so I can set my remaining end frames and ridge beam tomorrow.

I was planning to sheet and roof it myself, but if I can get a guy or a couple guys who work for my dad, I will chicken out.

The attic is really going to be some nice storage space. 16'x44'

very nice so far! keep those pics coming! what color are you going to finish the outside in?

I haven't totally made up my mind on the outside. I'm leaning toward red being barn-like as it is. It's probably going to be Lowes housewrap for a few months. I'm going to need a break!

You are nearly right, but will be rafters rather than trusses. Yesterday I got the last section of wall up, set the second gambrel end-frame, finished sheeting the attic, got the gable end-frame up, and set the ridge beam.

I'm off work this week, so I will have the rest of the week to work on it. I also am pretty sure I have somebody coming to sheet and roof the worst of it for me, so that's a relief.

I don't even have a roof on and my brother (the one with the ZRX) is already bring stuff for me to store.

My other brother had some cherry milled for him and I'm storing it for him. I have the jointer and planer, so it would need to come here anyway.

I hope the storage fee is a percentage of the lumber! Cherry is one of my favorite woods.

That was my thought originally, but the brother who had it cut left it out in the sun and it is warped to hell. It might make some nice skis though. Even with family, you often still get what you pay for. Oh well.

That'll be some serious work sheeting that roof, especially doing it yourself.

Good news! I have a couple of reasonably priced roofers coming tomorrow to sheet the roof. I'll probably be mostly on the ground cutting. We'll see how much they can get done in 3 days.

I managed to get a couple of guys who work for my dad part time and got my roof decked and felted. Taking the weekend off to celebrate my dad's 75th birthday, then back to my real job next week.

Man-o-man, it's looking good.

Thanks. I spent a lot of time planning, and I am really proud of the design I came up with. I wanted something that fit in with my old farmhouse and wanted room for a lift. I've had several people stop by and tell me how much they like what they see and ask if I am a pro because they want something similar. I guess I know what I could do if I got tired of my job or lost it. My dad always half-joked with me when I was in high-school that I didn't need to go to college or even finish high-school because i had plenty of career options. OK normally I'm a pretty humble guy, but right now I'm thinking I need that 18x8 doorway to fit my swelled head through.

Finally getting some shingles up. Just short of 5 bundles tonight. These probably wouldn't have been my first choice, but at $35/sq I'm not complaining.

Mind me asking what this is running you? I am looking at doing something very very similar. I would be adding a living quarters to the upstairs and possible slightly taller doors. Are you using siding on the outside? I think I will have to brick mine.

Awesome build!

$35/sq ?

well earned. . .

YOU ****

Combed CL for quite a while to find enough at a price to make it worth my while. I would hold off on the "you ****" till I'm sure I have enough. They are a discontinued color and I have a few damaged bundles. I'm hoping to just cut the damaged sections out since they aren't a regular pattern like a 3 in 1.

I have about $15k in concrete not counting the insulation and PEX. Last I checked my list I was estimating $15k for materials, but I don't have everything on that list. I've been saying $35k total, but will probably go over. I've found some good deals on some stuff though.

Oh and $35 for a permit, no inspections (Nuttsgt this is your que)

Why so much in concrete?? How thick is your slab?

Also, how big is your attic space? I will be looking to add a small living quarters to mine, and wanting to see about the sq ft your size offers.

Thanks again! Hope you don't mind the questions.

Looking great Kert. I'm planning to go with the Gambrel roof as well (minus your bonus lift space) and I can almost see my building with your pictures. I'm sitting on my hands right now waiting for my contractor. Keep 'em coming- congrats on all your hard work.

Wow When I poured my slab her in Florida I got 3000 PSI concrete with fibermesh for 80.00 per yard

Concrete is 5" thick and 6-bag mix with fibermesh. That also includes all the dirt work including removing 2 trees, frost footing, block, and 137 tons of fill. I have 32" of fall from one end to the other. I started figuring the cost and decided my contractor was at about 50:50 labor:materials which didn't seem out of line.

On the attic, I have a 16x44x8' space and rock solid. Don't know where you are located, and I hate to plug for Menards, but they were the easiest to deal with on trusses. They had lots of options that you could review at their design-it center, and they were much cheaper than the other place I got a quote from. They had quite a few options in terms of space and pitch. I chose to do the overhang separately so I could match the other section, but overhangs were available as well.

I am in Arkansas. I may go a slight bit higher so I can get a little more width inside the upstairs. I do not know of a menards in Arkansas. But I am in the construction industry, so I know a few people to help out there.

If you wanted to change the size of your building at all to add a slight bit more room upstairs what would you do? (already considering you have a full Gambrel roof).

Well, I had a quote for a truss the same width that would have given me a 20' room. You may sacrifice ceiling height or go to a 2-piece if you go too much wider. If you are doing metal, you could also do a 3:12 on top to limit the height.

Making some progress. Got one of the steep parts done and about 1/3 of the way up the other. I now remember why I'm not a roofer. Good exercise, but I'm a little nervous up there.

The shingles are actually a bit more greenish/blueish than they look in the picture.
DSC_1877.JPG

Had a roofer who likes heights, doesn't cost too much, can walk a 12:12 but not 15.25:12, and doesn't leave cigarette butts all over the place.

Where'd the cat come from ? The gable end still open next to the lower roof ?

I'm pretty sure that's how she got down, but I had a couple ladders and a walking board and I think that's how she got up.

The same cat got on the roof of the house and climbed the 12:12 pitch up to the top and wasn't sure how to get down. She eventually managed though.

When they get hungry, they'll find a way down. That's why we don't rescue cats out of trees.

Have you ever seen a cat's skeleton in a tree ? :lol_hitti
