The bump out looks great. It'll be nice to have most everything in one spot.

Are you using the compact flouresent bulbs?

What aware you going to do with all the new found space:lol_hitti.

Actually the light are directly above me when I stand at the bench. I just went in and checked after I read your reply. I may build one bench in the new addition though so I have something to set parts on, and also to have a place to bolt my vise down where it's handy. Not sure on that yet. :headscrat

Glad to hear the light placement is correct.

As far as the bench, what about just picking up a HF 44" box, make a nice top for it, (like stainless steel) mount the vice to it and put it right between the two older O/H doors ?

I might just do that. Never thought about mounting a vise to a roller.

Looking great, I agree the wall hiding the old roof, would be great for neon signs, and/or some new banners/signs.

Starting to get things organized, or as far as I can get it organized until the addition is completed. I got the rest of the workbench added on, got the second row of cabinets, and moved the Lista cabinet into the bumpout. Just as a reminder, this area is only 6 1/2' x 23' inside (7x24 outside) so not a lot of room, but I can still sit at the bench if need be.

Now I just have to get the main garage straightened out today and find some places for items like my car ramps which I can sell now. And a lot of things go into the shed outside which I'll get done today as it's nice weather outside. Plus momma has me helping her get things into the shed for winter.

My winter project is getting all 18 of my Gladiator cabinets organized. Since I moved them and had to empty some out to move them, I can't find anything :headscrat:lol:

Good eye. For some reason they are. The only reason I can think of is that the wall has a bow in it running horizontally, but it doesn't show. I have the rails up tight all along the wall. We checked everything as to why but can't figure it out.

I really like those cabinets!

You wasn't in on the big buy a couple of years ago? :wtf: I thought everyone was in on it. I bought 18 of them, and one member bought 50 I believe. Some went and bought two, and some twenty or more:lol: I forget whether the regular price was $99 or $79, but the sales price was $28 each. So to say, they didn't last long in the stores.

My cheapo Walmart garage cabinets did the same thing. Like you I made sure the cleat system was straight and level and still got one odd ball that just has to be different.

No updates in 2 days ! I'm getting the shakes !!

Been busy organizing things so I can get to my machines and so I can get a hose into the garage to wash all of the dust out. I've had dust from mud and such that got tracked in from when the garage addition was first started. Today, after moving a few more things around, I get my main garage back :rocker:

Kevin;

That is awesome! 6 months start to "finish" is an incredibly short time!
Just goes to show what good planning and a clear vision for the end result can do.

I just "invested"/wasted  the greater part of 2 days free time reading through this thread and learned a number of things, so thanks for sharing the build.

Regarding the bump out. Most of the places I have worked have had a Tool Room or Tool Cage for all the specialty tools needed for assembly, fabrication, maintenance, etc. So I vote for a sign over the entrance to that area, identifying it as the "54' Tool Room".

If you really want to get carried away, put a dutch door with a counter on it to give it the official look, and post a sign with "tool room" hours and a point of contact for questions.

Again Congratulations on a job well done!

You may have already answered this, but what are you going to do with the garage doors separating the new and old space? Planning to leave them installed? Opened all the time?

So are you done ? Nothing left ? Then how about some more walk-through pictures.

You may have already answered this, but what are you going to do with the garage doors separating the new and old space? Planning to leave them installed? Opened all the time?

No updates until now.

Mr. Roboto......the doors are going to stay there and most likely will remain open unless we get some really cold weather. I'll have the means to heat either one section or the other section as I will have two heaters in. Do I need two? I thought so, but the 45,000btu heater I have now does heat the addition up rather well. The vst area seems to pull the heat into it. But I have a 75,000btu heater that I will put into the addition, and I just may end up using it instead of what I have up in the garage now. Or I can shut the doors down between the two and heat one or the other.

Now for the updates......my drywall guy got his other houses finished and started here Monday. He should be done by this weekend sometime. He has the middle of the ceiling left to do with a couple of coats, and another coat on the seams, sand, then touch up. Plus he has all of the corners left to do. He hasn't made it here this morning yet, but should be here anytime.

By the end of next week I should have things primed and painted. I'll probably have to recruit Ashton (my neighbor) to help me out seeing that his mom is going to park her BMW in here this winter. And once it's painted, I can get the garage back together AGAIN!!! :rocker: I did have it all cleaned up, and now it is a mess again since I have everything from the addition and everything from my walls, all shoved into the bumpout or in the main garage. Someday it will ALL be cleaned up.

The addition is looking great. Keeping the other doors is a nice touch. Keeping Dust and what ever controlled out of another area is something a lot of wish we had.

Looking good Kevin!

I am sure you have probably mentioned this some where in this forum, but how much square feet does this add on??

Looking good Kevin!

I am sure you have probably mentioned this some where in this forum, but how much square feet does this add on??

With the addition and the bumpout, it adds 1176 sq.ft. to the garage, and the original garage was 1008 sq.ft., so I now have a total of 2184 sq.ft. :rocker: I love it, and worked my whole life to get it. I was basically raised in a garage.

The only other garage I had that I really liked was the one I built at our other house. I had just finished it up except the inside was not yet finished, and we sold the house for the house we have now. I'll have to dig some pics up and post them. That garage was a 22' x 36' and was the largest I could go on the property as far as depth. I think I may have got to park in it twice before the house sold.:(

Originally this garage was supposed to be closer to the house and on the other side of the property, but momma put a halt to that, so I ended up building on the other side of the property where it is now. What is odd, even though the garage is stained the same as the house, and I have sidewalks coming from the house to the garage, everybody that stops here the first time thinks the garage is another house. I need to make a sign up that says <-----GARAGE / HOUSE-----> so people know where to stop. Even if I say I'm in the big garage, they will stop at the house, or drive past because they didn't see a big garage. They think a big garage is a metal sided pole barn, and that is what they are looking for. Oh Well :dunno:

Kevin, Have you had time to do any thing with the little lathe?

Not yet Richard. Waiting to get the garage cleaned up, the rest of my electric in, then when the electrician is here for his final visit get my surface grinder hooked up. I want to grind some of the surfaces to get rid of the flaking chrome, then repaint the bed of the lathe. But it will be put to use for sure :beer:

Not much to report other than my drywall guy is still at it. After watching him on a daily basis, no wonder my drywall work looks like ****. Each seam gets about 4 coats of mud before the finish coat. And he only does 1/2 of a corner at a time per day. No, he's not slow, he's a perfectionist, and has been doing this for 40 years. I asked him why he doesn't just use a corner trowel for the corners......reason is that if you don't get things exactly even, and have to go back and smooth something out, chances are you'll screw things up. What he does is apply the tape with mud on both sides, just enough to hold the tape, then lets it dry. Then one day is one have of the corner with a 6" wide trowel. The next day is the other side of the corner. Day three is one side of the corner, then day 4 is the other side. So all the corners are this far.

**** joints get mudded and taped. Again, just thin enough to hold the tape, then let dry. Day two is mudding the tape again. Day three is using a mud box that applies the mud evenly, and then he does each side of the taped joint. Today he will mud the tap again and fill in between the mud on both sides.

So far, there would be almost no sanding, and when he is done, sanding will be very minimal. I should be painting by the weekend :rocker: Once painted, then all I have to do is get my lights in, my outlets in, baseboards and trim up, then my final inspection on the electric. By next week, I should be putting the garage back together and all cleaned up. Looking forward to that.

I'll post up some pics later today as to what is done so far.

Good drywall guys always fascinate me. I have done plenty of jobs with drywall. It involves tons of sanding, but comes out as expected. I haven't mastered the minimal sand approach yet. If I am on a job and not doing the drywall I always watch the paper hangers.

I agree....
I had a guy that worked for me (was a pro drywaller at one time)
Help me with my basement drywall. We did it in a quarter of the time it would have taken me by myself.

"You're killing me Smalls". I'm really looking forward to see this done. And seeing your "award" mounted.

Believe me, I'm looking forward to having this done also. I do have a dilemma though......I don't know what color to paint it. The ceiling will stay white as will the upper half, but I'm trying to decide on what to paint the lower half. I need to repaint the main garage and am leaning towards just repainting it maroon like it is now, and paint the new addition the same color, or to change everything to some other color, but both the addition and the main garage will be matching, only one is painted at the top and the other will be painted at the bottom.

I won't be putting any tin ion the addition, at least not right now due to running out of money. :( I will finish the tin on the main addition though which I have not finished yet.

So, any thoughts on paint? The maroon is what I have now, but I was sort of leaning towards one of the other colors
