Knee Pads?

One subtitle to this would be “Getting Old Really *****”. I do handy man work on the side and between sometimes working on rough surfaces, working in the cold sometimes, and having old knees all the time – I need to replace the old foam pads I’ve been using. They are sorta small and just foam and are a bit annoying when I stand then kneel, then stand etc. So I need a pair that are comfortable when standing and still protect on rough surfaces.

I did a search here for knee pad suggestions and the most recent where I found a discussion on them was 2 years old. The differences in pads mostly seem to be: “gel” vs. foam padding, non-skid vs. “skidable”. But a number of the links were to products no longer available. I found a few interesting looking sets on Amazon within my “budget” (less than $30). Here are the ones I found:

Custom Leathercraft 339 Armor-Flex Kneepads and 345 Professional Kneepads

Gel Elite Kneepads by Gamba Tools

Barwalt Tool KN-1 Ultralight Knee Pad (no idea if these are gel or foam)

Any input, on these or other pads, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My knees are shot too, and at 6'7", I'm kneeling for s lot of what some are standing to do.
Got some gel filled ones at Lowes several years ago that I really like.
These have squared off pads that are a bit too small though...they tend to roll sideways wham moving on them.

Let me cast my vote for, "Getting old really, really *****...":(

I found some "Hard, jell filled, green ones" at HD, and so far, they're OK...

They were is a bucket marked $10.95...

Is it just me, or are things on the floor, further away, than they used to be...

Thanks to all the younger members of this forum, for paying their Social Security...I am going to live forever, and bankrupt the system...There won't be any left for you, but you're really nice people, for taking such good care of me...I am really grateful...:beer:

I think floors have somehow become further away than they used to be. Same with roofs. :(

Tell you what, glucosamine has worked wonders for me. No pain in my knees. I still use knee pads though.

I prefer to wear pants that have pockets at the knees to slide in pads . No slippage or readjusting pads, no straps to pinch you and no cut off circulation.
Duluth trading sells them, there are also some others out there.

For those in the building trades, this has to be one of the best things invented in the past few decades. Thanks for mentioning that option!

^ This.
My girlfriend found a pair of work pants with those knee pockets at some "work wear" store and brought them home with a pair of the foam pads that slip into the pockets.
Best thing since sliced bread. And you can toss the pants into the washing machine and dryer without removing the pads!!!
Way mo' betta than the strap-on things that slip down and slide around.

When I did flooring I would wear the cheap volleyball knee pads under my pants. I have the underarmour ones and they are very comfortable. I hated the squared off contractor ones, they are very hard to move around in and you roll off the edges. Those pants listed above sound like a great option if they fit well.

My knees never bothered me until they did. I used to kneel a lot. Even on concrete. I wonder if I had worn kneepads back then would I have less trouble today? 2 minutes without pads & I limp for 2 weeks. I knelt for an hour on a ceiling joist & spent months in physical therapy before stuff worked right again. I used to be able to do that all day. My knees never touch the ground without padding now.

I have a pair of the Duluth pants for times when I'm working a public event & don't want to look like I'm wearing kneepads. I use an old pair of HD nylon surfaced pads with the belts & clips cut off in them. The Duluth pads did not work as well for me. They are loose enough that I need to be careful they are positioned before kneeling.

The rest of the time I use regular ******** kneepads when needed. I have been using these Husky Soft Gels for awhile. It seems like every time I look at them the price goes up. I wear the hooks to the inside & they seem to last longer than on the outside where they can get snagged & torn off. My knees feel good on this style.

one of the best things ive found is the backrest from an lowback office chair.

the one i currently have has a plywood back and 2-3" of hi density foam.

when it gets torn up or oil/fuel soaked i can toss it in the dumpster

best of all it was free

I like the idea for colder months, but in the summer here long pants would melt my legs off. I'm gonna look into Duluth Trading, thanks.

I have a pair of semi solid knee pads, used them for over 15 years. I don't have to use them often, but whenever I have to crawl under the truck, they are invaluable.

In my shop when working on my road race car (a very low Fiat) I either sit on a chair or have some moving blankets (free :) ) on the shop floor. It has worked OK in the shop but on a rough surface not so much.

I can no longer kneel even for a couple of minutes with knee pads. I have a low padded seat on 4 swivel casters that is 10" off the ground that gets a lot of use, and sometimes I just sit on the ground/floor. Thankfully, my backside still works.

I have the AWP from Lowes also, its pretty good for kneeling and also sitting on. So for its' been holding up well and is pretty comfortable. Dust and debris gets stuck in the foam so I use a shop vac to clean it.

out of the ones you listed i would choose the CLC 345 UNLESS you work on delicate wood floors. any sand, dirt or debris and a hardshell kneepad will damage or scratch a wood or laminate floor.

for this i would run a softshell canvas or leather kneepad.

i personally use the CLC 340 it is more expensive, but is a gel. CLC also makes the new dewalt gel pads, they are great too. i stock pile 2 or 3 pairs of each at all times.

as for soft pads, which are very comfortable and wont scratch delicate surfaces.
look into troxel.
they are pricey, but is THE MOST comfortable kneepad youll ever wear.
the leather capped are XL in side for big guys.

these are not as thick, but they are small and easy to wear and maneuver over larger sets. they dont have as much foam, so they do wear faster.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/162126175593?lpid=82&chn=ps&ul_noapp=true

they have no buckles or velcro to tear up the back of your legs after extended use.
the straps are like a wetsuit material and are really comfortable.

im on my kneeds 8-10 hrs a day, so ive went through a few sets

My knees were giving me some trouble too. The physical therapist said to get gel knee pads and take glucosamine. I couldn't stomach the glucosamine, but the gel knee pads are great.

I install a fair amount of tile and I've tried many through the years...These are the best so far. https://www.menards.com/main/mainte...52490417-c-13848.htm?tid=-7096485738974046790

Over the past 7 months they've proven tried and true including these two larger installs, including HardieBacker on both. I'm 46 and my knees and back have been around the block a few times.

Anyways, these pads stay square and don't burn the tender backs of the knees. My only complaint is the red writing on the inner comes off on my tan Ripstop pants. It washes away with every wash and eventually stops.

A few years ago I had to do a ton of work on a stadium to involved crawling on concrete. I had tried a few of the knee pads at the local big box store and wasn't happy because they were too tight or too loose.

Anyway, I bought this and I liked them a lot. I've since used them for flooring installation such as ceramic tile and laminate and they haven't disappointed me:

I thought my knees were indestructible. And they were. Until they weren't. I knelt directly on concrete or whatever for years.

Now if I kneel for minutes I limp for days. Kneepads help a lot, but the straps on the back of the knee can make them ache.

Currently I use Bradz kneepads. They're long & rest on top of my boots, so the straps behind can be loose. They're too expensive, but so far have been working well. It's the price I pay for being stupid for years. At least the faces are replaceable. Although I haven't had to replace them yet.
