Looks like ill have to get a set. They look like the would work good. I use the square style extractors all the time. They work great for broken spark plugs. Never was a big fan of spiral extractors. Never seem to work. They just wedge the bolt in tighter.

What is the best thing to use for bolt extraction? Iv done very little but i always seem to have the best luck with the square style. Any tips could be helpfull as well. When you gotta extract a bolt usually its your time you are burning so the faster the better.

I have a feeling till the end of time, man will still be trying to build a better bolt extractor. :spit: Just think of all the different extractor designs produced over the years.

And the majority of them work. Some better then others. But they all excel in different situations. Thats why owning various types is benificial. Ive honestly had better luck welding nuts onto broken bolts. Rather then wasting tons if time drilling then messing with an extractor that doesnt get it out anyway. These extractors look promissing.

:+1: If it doesn't come out with a left hand drill bit, it either gets welded or slapped in the mill.

these are really ment to be used when the bolt is broken off below the surface.

Uhm, aren't they all? Otherwise a pair of pliers or pipe wrench is hard to beat.

I generally have more luck with the left hand twist style than those squared off extractors. The problem with them is you have to knock them into the hole you drilled which expands the fastener against the threads.

They're already available.

Left hand drill bits
Right hand drill bits and heli-coil/timeserts.

All depends on the type of material you are tying to extract. Both will work with some success on steel bolts/studs but only the fluted hammer it in type will work on something malleable like a brass pipe fitting. Because of the exact thing mentioned. The screw type applies more and more outward pressure until it just strips material out where the fluted type punches material out somewhat and just gets a bite. Ymmv but I'd love to see someone try to get a broken brass 1/2"NPT out of a steel tank with a screw type extractor. Ask me how I know....

My favorite style of extractors are the ones made by ridgid. They are the ones that are plus shape with the sliding collar. I like that they bite both ways, giving me the ability to work the bolt back and forth if it is turning out hard. As others have said, if I can weld a nut to it, thats what I'm doing.
