The Knipex (they say it kin-uh-pex) rep stopped by the tool store where I work and showed some samples and left a catalog and price list.

Oh my gosh, I didn't have any idea just how huge their product line is. They make a bazillion specialty snips, strippers, pliers, etc.
I also was quite surprised at how the majority of their line is geared to electrical/electronic work, where I usually thought of them as makers of mechanics pliers (only).

I was impressed at the design and quality of the pliers they showed, I didn't know about many of the handy features of the Cobra pliers etc.

No real question here, just wanted to express my respect for their products and the staggering product line.

Oh, he asked me how I heard of Knipex (he was surprised) and I told him that I read about them on The Garage Journal!

I run into a serious dear-in-the-headlights/too-many-options when I look at their catalogue. I'd like to replaced my no-name and craftsman stuff with Knipex, but I just don't know what I really need, so I haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Really? Odd. :headscrat I knew they were "for the electrical crowd", and didn't know they had anything a tech like myself might be interested in. Hence the reason they are never with the rest of the hand tools. Never heard of cobra pliers until a few months ago, and to be honest, didn't take much interest since I try to avoid those type pliers.

My sentiments exactly.

And as for the guy who says he doesn't like the Cobra type of pliers, I don't know of any others out there that are of that type. Plenty that LOOK like them, but they grab and allow you to apply pressure without squeezing the handles.

Oh yeah, he did say that some of the Craftsman pliers are re-branded Knipex.

No, I meant I try to avoid using most any pliers of that general shape. Channellocks for example. Nothing against the cobras, I haven't used them.

Considered getting the cman/knipex 7"/10" combo since I missed out on the lowes deal.

I noticed this the other day. Stumbled upon these at my local Sears:

http://www.sears.com:80/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00945433000P?prdNo=6&blockNo=6&blockType=G6

Looked exactly like the Knipex, but the lower price made me hesitant to buy. Of course, the sales guy knew nothing. They are labeled "Made in Germany."

Looks like I'm going to pick up the two-pack for $39 (web special; ends tonight).

Got my first Knipex at the Lowes deal. I really like the quality and style. Old channel locks have gone into the loaner box.

I'd like some more of their pliers myself. I have a 12" pair of cobras, a 7in pair of needle nose, and two pairs of their mini bolt cutters. I really like the mini bolt cutters. They are impressive for their size. I'd kinda like to try some of their larger bolt cutters to see how they do.

The Cobras are what I grab when I want pliers for "unintended" purposes, like taking apart some old hoses while attempting to save the fittings. The Cobras would "bite" chunks out of the old hose, or hold the mess steady so I could work at it with a pick.

OTOH owning them has me thinking about NWS ...

Just like most other companies, Knipex does outsource some of their tools from other European makers, but the majority are German-made.

IMO, their snap ring pliers deserves more recognition. It happens to be one of the products that the Knipex president is proud to have developed.

I love knipex pliers, first saw them when snap on (and mac?) started selling them via there vans, about 10 years ago have quite a few pairs, bought via tool vans, and online tool vans seem to mark them up in price a bit tbh

recently bought a pair of there side cutters to replace my 10+ year old ones that were looking worse for wear (they have seen a LOT of use, and abuse over the years so there due replacement)

got them from the Matco van which comes round my work they cost is almost double what they are from knipex themselves though o_O (i needed them at the time, and i got a deal on some other tools :) ) the only difference is they have matco on them

not sure how they compare to NWS ones, as i only have one pair of them, and not had them as long....

LOVE my "Craftsman" Knipex Cobras. My only regret is not buying 2 sets when they were on sale....back then the sale price was 19.99 for the 2 pack, not 39.99 like it is now.

Channel Locks or even Vice Grips couldnt compare....I used the larger of the 2 pack to turn a completely rounded off, rusted on nut off an exhaust mount bolt. Didnt slip once, and with a generous coating of AeroKroil I was able to remove it without breaking the stud off the mount.

I notice my local Sears now has a few Knipex branded Knipex items. The pliers-wrench looks really nice, but now their prices are on par with everyone else.
