Hey guys. Just joined and want to say i love the site btw.

I went to the Knipex page earlier today and ordered the 3 piece plier set for $69.00.

Pretty good deal if you ask me and i got free shipping. I received an email about an hour ago saying that it has already shipped.

I was looking for some good cutters. What do you guys think about the 10" diagonal cutters?

you just have to use it left handed.
how big is the stripper compared to this POS? i use these for trailer wiring. they dont last all that long on regular wire if you use it a ton, but traielr wiring has a softer insulation than a good copper or tinned marine wire. it says compact, but the picture makes them look huge.

Depends on your plan for them. The handles are pretty cumbersome for what you'd typically use them for. They can and will cut nails/screws/bolts though but it's not the right tool for the job in my opinion.

What's the difference between a cobra and pliers wrench? I'm looking at the 10" versions, I really like my needle nose and diagnoal cutter bought elsewhere, been waiting to add the pliers.

These prices seem pretty decent, but for those of you with a Sears nearby, check their prices in store too. My local store stocks most of the common stuff: bolt cutter, cable shears, diagonal cutter, end nipper, pliers wrenches, and cobra pliers (cobra pliers are Craftsman, but clearly Knipex rebranded)

With surprise points I bought them one or two at a time and built a decent Knipex set for cheap.

The few pliers I couldn't get at Sears I bought from Chad's Toolbox. The prices are pennies higher than the link above, but if Knipex makes it, they seem to sell it! http://chadstoolbox.com/knipex/

I looked at Chad's before I bought my 3 pc set from the mobile distributor supply. I liked the lower price and free shipping from the mobile guys.

You are right though, there are a lot of Knipex on Chad's site.

I am still debating on getting some of those cutters. Just can't convince myself to commit to buying them. Lol.

Cobras have teeth (for turning round stock/pipe/rounded fasteners/etc.), the pliers wrench is smooth-jawed (for nuts/bolts/brass fittings/etc.).

Just by looking at the pictures one can see the major differences. The pliers wrench has incredible holding strength with flat non-marring jaws similar to a typical "crescent" wrench without the slop or loose adjuster. The Cobras are known for gripping strength, slim design with strong grippy jaws that can rival some pipe wrenches depending upon the application. Knipex pliers are expensive well designed tools that are a great addition to the tool box. Sears codes, sywr points, sales can sometimes reduce the sticker shock.

I've only been on Garage Journal a couple months and had no previous knowledge of Knipex. I've read such great reviews on the Knipex tools that I decided I better get some. If I had seen this thread sooner, I probably would have ordered that 4 piece set, but I already ordered a couple items from Sears this morning. Saw that I had some bonus points which would be expiring in a couple days, so I ordered the 2 piece Craftsman (rebadged knipex Cobras) set for $47.** and the 10" diagonal cutters were on sale for $28.**.

The surprise points combined with my earned points brought my total out of pocket cost to around $25. I'm looking forward to trying these out!

Thanks, killer deal on the automotive set I just ordered. I have the plier wrench. It's especially good for pushing in roll pins when building an AR.

i have several knipex pcs and the craftsman cobras are the same with a different color handle.and yes they are great tools.imo some must haves are the mini bolt cutters,pliers wrenches,cobras,cable shears,long diagonal cutters and wire rope cutters.

Used mine recently to open up the pvc sewer pipe access cap to snake a clog, which I didn't want to chew up with a monkey wrench. Adjustment and ratcheting action was extremely simple and lots of force could be used if necessary. Could have used a large adjustable but out came the big $$ plier wrench to "save" the day and LOML nodded in approval of the big one's addition to the collection...LoL

As mentioned before, one difference is the Cobras have teeth while the plierswrench jaws are smooth, which is good for working on pipes that you don't want to mar the finish.

But another key is the plierswrench has parallel jaws. This makes it usable as an adjustable wrench but better gripping.

The sale prices listed are good, especially if you want just one set of pliers. But if you aren't in a hurry and wait for a Zoro flash sale, most of these will be a few dollars cheaper. An example is the 8" grabbers (38-91-200), which are $30 now but will be $20.46 when Zoro has a 30% off flash sale. Of course you usually have to buy $200+ to get the 30% discount but if you are looking to stock your pliers drawer Zoro's flash sale is probably the most economic way to do so.

Oddly the 7" is the less expensive pliers wrench. I have the 7" + 10" pliers wrenches but have used the 10" for more projects because of the better leverage and larger opening.
