I'm looking to buy a Knipex pliers wrench for my nephew who is a John Deere mechanic. What would be the best size to buy for him? I'm only going to buy one to see if he likes them. Would you start with the 7 1/4" or the 10"?

Probably the 10”, I think it’s the best general purpose size.

I have the 7“ and 12“ at my shop, and it’s mostly the 7“ I use, but I’m doing mostly automotive work. For agricultural I would want something bigger.

I have the 10” in my road box, and it’s perfect for general machine shop use, pipe fittings, and all manner of unforseen stuff!

Definitely the 10" for mechanic use.

I used my 7.5" regularly too, but it feels way less capable than my 10". If you're using it around the house, the 7.5" is probably the right size, but I rarely need the smaller size for fixing cars or tractors.

Your years too late (don't think they still sell them)...

Craftsman used to sell the 10" set for $20, pretty regularly and they had a package with both the 10" an 7".
Might keep your eyes peeled for them used though.

I got my 10" at Sears for $37. Never saw it for less than that, but yeah, it's years too late now.
My 7" is actually Blue Point branded, and I got it on CL for $15.

save the money and just get the multipack with all three of the sizes in one
He's a Snap-On guy, I'm taking little steps. This is the first part of my intervention showing him there are other great tools out there. Nothing wrong with SO tools, in fact there is a lot of good in them, I'm just showing him the world.

Same for me.

I unintentionally ended up with every single size they make for the Pliers Wrench (except the novelty XS). I use the 7" the most but if I were to only have one it would be the 10". Same for the Cobra, if I could only have one, 10".

You all talking about the pliers wrench or cobras?

Yup, my thoughts exactly. I've never seen Craftsman Pliers Wrench style pliers sold at Sears.

SBD Craftsman is making them now though as V-series but never seen them back then at Sears, only the Cobras.

10". Definitely.

Around the house and in the motorcycle shop I use the 7" most. But on the tractor, 10".

Knipex sells the 7 inch and 10” together in a set.
It’s the most useful automotive sizes.
That is why they package them together as a set.

- 2 Piece Cobra Pliers Set (87 01 180 & 87 01 250) (003120V01US)

P.S. Your thread title really is not useful and should be revised to reflect what you are actually asking for.

Has anyone tried the HF copy of the 10” pliers wrench? Or the Milwaukee copies of the 7 and 10”?

The HF Icon version is a remarkably good clone of the Knipex original design. Been using a pair for a few months and aside from a slightly softer and puffier grip material, they handle and perform exactly the same as their German counterparts.

For me the XS is an everyday carry pliers. It fits nicely in my jeans watch pocket.

10"
Tools serve what purpose?
Make life easier...

My rule of thumb with tools goes two ways.
If it's tight spaces I'm concerned with I always get the smallest possible I can get away with.

If clearance isn't an issue then the biggest (without being cumbersome) is what I look for. (More power)

7s can be one handed, 10s can't with my hands. I opted for 7s for that reason otherwise I'll grab the appropriate wrench.

You're right the title is kind of vague. I'll try to do better the next time I post. (y)
