I saw some videos on Youtube about Knipex knock offs being sold at Home Depot. What is a good source to purchase from to ensure I get the "real" Knipex pliers?

Note: I should have said knock offs as opoosed to counterfeit in the title of the thread and have asked the Admins here to change it.

Re: Counterfeit Knipex and how to avoid them

A video on youtube? Link or it never happened.

Home Depot is a big company, I find it difficult to believe they are selling counterfeit anything. I assume it is a mistake, can't imagine they are doing it intentionally.

So it looks like neither one is really calling them Knipex, they just look similar and have a different brand name. Not hardly the same as selling counterfeit Knipex.

OP - You may find this previous thread informative.

If you could only buy 6 Knipex tools, which would you choose?

So... I watched just the first 30 seconds of the video. I don't think it is difficult to steer clear of the knock offs. The name brand have their name written in big letters on the handles. The knock offs have no writing on them.

Lots of Knipex Cobra copy cats out there... Some good, some not.

The best way to spot the real Knippex is the price tag...

That's funny. When I ordered my first pair at work. The purchasing agent said I got the quantity wrong.

I'm not sure who you asked to change it, but I went ahead and did it. I'm also going to move to the General Tool section as you should get more answers there.

Just look at the name on the product. No one is claiming to be something they aren't.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery  :wtf:

It's really simple, if the pliers are branded KNIPEX and made in Germany, you're good to go.

If they say any other brand and made in a location other than Germany, you're probably getting a lesser tool trying to save a few bucks.

As for Channellock, i like their 447 curved dykes, their oil filter pliers, and their professional slip joint pliers and that's about it. I really haven't used channellock arc joint pliers since I started using Knipex years ago.

If you are referring to that real tool reviews video, those are just knock offs that started to show up after Knipex's patent expired. The knockoffs by Milwaukee look like a hybrid between Knipex (jaws and adjustment mechanism) and Chanellock (handle shape). If you are looking for the actual Knipex Cobras, it's really easy to tell it apart from the other ones because it will say Knipex and Made in Germany on the metal part of the tool. Also, you don't get that specially shaped handle and the knockoffs may be a bit bulkier.

They aint always a perfect clone. The only one as good as some Klein 9 side cutters I have seen was an import at a re-tool store. I bought some for tractors. If I had realized they were as good as they were would have treated some dykes I got at the same time a l9ittle better but the 9's were perfect and maybe even better. I reach for them today as the cutters have remained sharp over the years, the klien are all worn out and dull, same with a couple diamonds too.

Whether it is the cloned copycat stuff, The HF compare ads, or the BS from the local parts store; it helps to understand the differences between this bargain stuff and name brand tools. All the retailers are out to make a sale, but it remains Your task to make Your best choice. As far as store brands and off brands; I do have My favorites, but generally favor name brands.
