Knotty pine in a garage

I used a lower budget approach with T1-11 siding inside my garage for the first 8 feet up then 4 feet of metal siding above that and on the ceiling. The white metal does a really good job of reflecting light down making the garage really bright. So...I would definitely try to get a white ceiling even with your darker pine sidewalls.

It's not a good picture, but I used pine on the ceiling in the office.

Then built a workbench with the same pine:

A freestanding garage it is ok. But if you are attached to a house or have living space overhead, most codes require fireproof wall (drywall) between the rooms.

Yup, but we still have plenty of folks on this site hanging tin directly on studs too. To each their own...

We also have folks assuming that anyone considering another material doesn't have the necessary firewall required by code in place already.

In most jurisdictions the home wouldn't be issued a final passing inspection and certificate of occupancy without the garage firewall requirements being met.

Nice picture in this thread.
but anyone know of a paint or coating that will make sparks bounce off wood?
Would the clear epoxy help a lot over being barewood?

I have more questions than answers.
Some great looking shops. In my wood shop I think the pine would look great.

I lost a place to fire. Where I weld or grind I try to have a metal panel and even have some cement panels I use for back stops. Have fire extinguishers every where.

Pitch pine makes a great fire starter. I carry some in my hunting pack.

I don't like knotty pine anywhere.

Too reminiscent of 50's rec rooms.

I would take it down if I had it anywhere.

Knots are a defect in the wood. Why would I use wood that has defects, in a place where they are visible?

It's all in the eye of the beholder. Knots are not "defects" in the wood. They are places where branches once lived when they were still trees. Some people like the look of the knots and wide grains because they offer some natural beauty. Some people prefer pieces from other trees or parts of the tree that had no branches. It's simple preference.

I happen to love the look of different woods and grains. I have a different hardwood in every room of our house.

As far as fire code goes you would have to check with the local building department. A lot of people here put the drywall up first then wood over that.

Assuming no code issues...

I did fir T&G in my master as well as the entire ceiling of the last house I built. In order to eliminate air leakage, I installed 4 x 8 sheets of poly-iso foam and taped the seams with foil tape before hanging the T&G - my master bedroom is the warmest room in the house because of this!

BS Bill you would post about tearing it down and then stay on GJ all day. No wonder you cant get **** done at your place.

Do you have water yet or heat?

OP sorry to get off topic.

I would think the knotty pine would look great in a garage. I just used if for a porch ceiling and the sofits on my new workshop.
