Kobalt Stainless Tool Chest Question

Hi- I'm new to the Garage Journal. I am seriously considering purchasing the 41 inch Kobalt stainless steel rolling base and top chest. I have been researching the forum and found a lot of great information on tool chests in general.

The Kobalt is expensive. I spoke with the manager of tool department today and he said that even thought this set is not on sale he would be able to work with me a little if I'm seriously interested.

My question is what is the lowest sale price anyone here has seen on this combo in the last year? I would like to offer him the most recent sale price and take a set home next weekend.

I would appreciate any help from forum members and look forward to being on the GJ in the future.

Thanks,
DonP

Lowes will give you 10% off if you open a commercial credit account. If you are a veteran they will give you 10%.

I looked at those boxes and agree: they are very, very nice. But I could not afford one.

I want to say after Christmas I seen the roll around chest on sale at lowes for $585. I did not see what the matching top box was on sale. I have had just the bottom box for 4 years now and paid $610 before tax.

if your not in a hurry those pop up every now and then on craigs. I like the stainless one they had a while back with the car radio mount in the top. I see them in craigs about once twice a year but never when I have extra cash

People seem to like these boxes but I've never been overly impressed especially for the price. I would bet the stainless doesn't hold up very well over a number of years.

For home use i'd think they are fine, I think they're sharp looking (WHEN CLEAN).. though just be prepared for fingerprint city..also surely the stainless is lower grade so just keep it waxed should be ok.

I have the 41" combo and like it alot. Like to have another one. First thing you need to do is throw the blue drawer padding away and open the drawers and let them air out. Smells bad.

My wife got me that setup for Christmas a few years ago (was also a garage warming present). Overall I like it. I do wish the thinner drawers were just a hair deeper - like 3/16". My impact and my bigger sockets don't fit well. Same for my tin snips, electrical tools, etc. But, for the price it is tough to beat.

I have one at home and can't say I'd buy another. The center [wide] drawer really needs to have dual sliders on it. The little black endcaps always pop off as well. It's an alright box, but I wish I had bought something not stainless. Not only for keeping it clean, but also it's easier to match future additions with a common color.

I'd go buy the Harbor Freight box today if I needed a new one.

Home Depot has(had?) a 41" black combo for $298.00 this past weekend. Might be worth checking out. Yes its not stainless, but the price is tempting for sure.

Yea, I looked at that box, and it's tempting for sure...however, the top is shallow and the metal on the whole box is thinner than most. You wouldn't want to use it for anything other than a home shop and where you aren't going to roll it around all that much if at all. That said, it's a good value if you're just an at home DIY guy. Yes, it's got less ball bearings than most, yes, it won't hold that much weight but...space for $$$ you can't beat it.

To me it's between the much much better built HF box, and the Husky. If the top were the same depth at the bottom, it'd be a done deal. Then again you're talking about $628 on sale for the HF box vs. $298 for the Husky. If you really evaluate what you're going to use it for and how much weight you're really putting in it...you might want to consider it.

I just found this box, which looks like a better box, at least space wise...

I am on my mobile at the moment, so I don't have the link handy, but there is an excellent thread on GJ comparing the various boxes from the major stores. Locate and read that before buying. I would go with the HF model, personally.

Welcome to GJ Don. I don't know where you hail from, but before jumping on the Kobalt tool chest, make sure you look at Harbor Frights toolboxes and also Menards boxes if you have a Menards around you.

On a personal note, I have three Menards 41" bases, 2 side cabinets, and one 41" top box. I'm sold on them other than I have the grass green. They now have red, blue, black, and the ****** green. A well built box for the money.

Also look at the Harbor Freight boxes. Quite a few members on here have jumped all over them. Not only to use as a roll-a-round, but to build in as base cabinets for a bench. If you do a search for STEEVO, he built a killer bench out of the ones he purchased. Someone may know the link off the top of their noggin'.

Again....welcome!!!! And when you get a chance, post up some pics of the garage and rides.

Note on the Kobalt 41"...

If you plan on placing a lot of weight on the top tray, it does not have a center support, it will bow down a bit if you have a a couple hundred socks on it. I cut a piece of oak 16 1/2" long x 2 1/8 wide x 1 3/16 thick" and slid it perpendicular to the front of the chest just over the (off) center lower draw support plates, then you can load it with a 100lbs.
