Kreuter made high quality tools. Not many people seem to collect or even know about them. I regularly buy Kreuter stuff at the flea market for a dollar or less.

Here is an example of a Kraeuter ratchet made by S-K that I have. They were a supplier of tools during WW2. I have several of their various types of pliers which are top quality.

Thats exactly what the ratchet looks like in the 22 pc set im bidding on. and no one has challenged me at 20 bucks yet

Kraeter was a maker of excellent pliers going back to around 1900. I don't think they ever made any socket stuff, just relabled sk.

ALL: i usually picked up Kreuter tools when i'd see them even though i didn't know much about them cause they seem like they are better than average quality.

is it 100% that they were made by SK? and as their cheaper brand?

Excellent indeed. I bought these linesman pliers 50 years ago and they still work great.

I have a very nice 1/4 Kraeuter socket set, several pliers and 3/8, 1/2 ratchets. They make very good pliers. The socket sets are SK made. The SK rebuild kits fit exactly.

Woody: thanks again for the PM and for posting up the link to your Kraeuter thread you started a few years ago. since that thread has a ton of information on it can you maybe have the MODS move it to VINTAGE TOOLS SECTION and maybe with BIGWHEELS permission we'll take the Kraeuter tools conversation over to the thread you started that already has a ton of information on it?

BigWheels: ok with you? check out Woody's other threads too if you have time cause for a while there he was posting threads with a ton of old tool companies.

Interesting; just looked at a set of Kreuter 3/8" deep sockets yesterday. They were in good condition, and appeared to be SK, except the metal case blue.
They're good tools, and can be often had at very good prices, as there don't seem to be many folks collecting them.

They are a bargain. I don't know of anyone collecting them, but maybe some of the sk guys are?

Re: Kraeuter

I grabbed a partial Kraeuter 3/8' drive socket set at the flea yesterday. Here they are with the blue paint removed! I took a couple of pictures of some of my other Kraeuter tools. The 1/4" drive set has been filled in with other brands.

Nice Kraeuter stuff Don. U.S. made metric sockets always follow me home too.

Sometime last year I picked up most of a midget socket set. Looks like I'm missing a socket, the 2" extension, and the ratchet. The seller thought they were foreign made based on the Brand name even though the insert clearly states 'American Made Fine Tools'. :dunno:

Funny story but a picture is worth 1000 words or something along those lines. Anyhow about several weeks ago someone posted an ad on the local CL, and low and behold in one of the pictures you could just make out a kreuter ratchet (even with al the bad picture shots I knew what it was). Long story short version I rushed over to that tag sale and this monster of a man in front of me was snorting "I am here for the tools", you know the kind so to speak.

Well when they let us in he started blocking the way with his body and he started grabbing every tool in sight, but I spotted that ratchet well hidden and I made a dive for it. The other man made his way well ahead of me but I had that treasure in my hands and off I went to pay for it. Made by SK it is one I like very much. Picture of the ratchet in the above post...

I don't have much, but here's a couple.

32071 flat panel 3/8 ratchet (SK) and an older and very mushroomed brick set. I like the "Warranted" mark

That handle looks anything but comfortable. For the longest time I thought it was just missing a rubber boot that fit over the end. I swear if I ever get one of those ratchets I'll be making a tootsie roll boot for it! :lol_hitti

I very recently picked up a few pairs of Kraeuter pliers. While I’m not really familiar with Kraeuter tools in general, my first impression of these particular pliers is that they are of pretty good quality. I haven’t really put any of them to use yet, but I’m looking forward to giving them a try. They seem to be well made. Based on the orientation of the manufacturer’s stamp and model numbers, all four pliers were probably made at some point between the mid 1940s to 1950s.

I got a multi-piece set for graduation, back in 1973 that included sockets, ratchets, wrenches, pliers and so on. They were available from W. Bell and company then. I still have the major portion of them and use them frequently. They are well made and have held up as well or better than Craftsman and SnapOn that I have.

This pair of Kraeuter 71-8 pliers was in a batch of tools I bought Sunday. They are interesting in that they are not needle-nose pliers. They have purpose-modified tips for a particular task.

Photo #1 is an overall picture
Photo #2 is a side view of the tip
Photo #3 is an end view of the tips
Photo #4 shows the wedge side of the tips
Photo #5 shows the anvil side of the tips.

I think they were used to form something, or to grip a particular shape while assembling something down in a hole. The uniformity and finish on the working surfaces indicates to me that they were factory-made. This is supported by the lack of teeth on the regular jaw surfaces. I haven't seen any smooth-jawed pliers of this short-nose form in the Kraeuter catalogs on the internet.

Nice quality pliers, and they are an interesting variation of the short needle-nose pattern.

In the last couple months I picked up a few more Kraeuter pliers. The first pair is a narrow nose slip joint. The nose is 3/16” thick. I also bought a set of Kraeuter mini pliers numbered 81, 82, 83, and 85. The set consisted of five different models. I seem to be missing model number 84. Add that to my list of tools to hunt for.

As i recall some years back (10 or more?) Kraeuter ratchets/sets were selling for a pretty good premium on fleabay, but that fad appears to have passed somewhat - they seem to hang around longer and sell cheaper now.

I seem to be missing model number 84.
Do you know what type it is, Jim? I'll keep an eye out. When are these pliers from? I have the 1942 catalog, which they're not shown in, and just from seeing bunches of Kraeuter pliers here and elsewhere, the model numbers look atypical.

//// BREAK ////

I started collecting Kraeuter DOE wrenches a few years ago and I've always posted updates on the DOE thread. Probably because there hasn't been a single centralized prominent 'all things Kraueter' thread here. I remember looking for one when I created the Sticky and couldn't find one. It's one of those brands that, for whatever reason, unlike Plomb or Williams etc, has a dozen threads, all specific to a certain tool, all short-lived. I don't remember this one, though. Maybe because it's spelled wrong. This one is fairly diverse and taking off a little now after being bumped, so what do you guys think of making this one the link in the Sticky Index thread? I will ask NUTTSGT to correct the spelling.

I think I posted these on a pliers thread already, but I will put them here too.

I have this little pair of pliers, 1601-4. Still have nice teeth too!

Alloy Artifacts dates this handle pattern and "KRAEUTER U.S.A." cast into the inside of the handles as 1924 to late 1930s.

Lugs, thanks for taking up the issue of the misspelling. I put a request in through the regular channels when I posted my pliers recently. I would like to see a link in the sticky, as I checked there first before searching the Vintage board.

It looks like it was a five piece jewelers precision set. I found the set in the Kraeuter Spring 1958 catalog.

I found the no. 71 pliers in the 1958 catalog No. 26, page 7 on archive.org. They are "Short Jaw Nose-Cutting Pliers", and are designed to reach into tight places and cut small wires. My thought that the jaws seemed factory-made was right!
