If you’re gonna feed it get it fixed.
We have a setup like below on each of our two back porches. Kitty Tube with a Rubbermaid tub on top. The platform has PVC legs and is clipped at 45° across the front to align with the tube opening. As we call it.... The platform is the "veranda" and the tub is the "cabana".
The Kitty Tube is insulated and ventilated. They're really nice but you're probably not going to like the price. Available from Kitty Tube or on Amazon. Free shipping though.
We did these shelters after we adopted 4 ferals (or, they adopted us) in 2012 and knew they were going to be keepers. We still have 2 of them. One had given birth to her second (that we know of) litter when we found her. Pretty amazing for ferals to make it to 15 years old now.
If you keep the cat, you should look into TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) services near you. Likely much less expensive than a local vet unless they offer some type of deal. That's what we did with ours. Fresno appears to have 3-4 offerings.

Damn you're right, those aren't cheap. Haven't seen the little guy though as I've been sick as a dog unfortunately.
I'm more worried about the heat; winter isn't really a thing out here as it never gets cooler than 40s or so. It's board shorts weather year round.

We have a black cat that's adopted us. Well he's adopted my girl. Loves her. Me not so much though I've graduated to door man. She got him fixed, and got all his shots current. We have a water bowl outside for him, but food is indoors to avoid attracting other neighborhood critters.
He's very aware of his surroundings, and very cautious. Probably why he's still around. Maybe one day he'll warm up to me, but I'm not holding my breath. The female cat we have that we inherited from some friends loves me, but she's still a little autistic *****.

Of our 4 ferals, only one of them warmed up to us a little bit. If it was feeding time, you could pet him quite a bit. Other than that... NO way. That worked to our advantage when he had a major eye infection. Taking him to the vet would have been impossible. The vet gave us the antibiotic injection and we were able to grab him and give it to him. Sadly, he was the first to pass.
The remaining 2, and the 3rd that passed away last year, stayed feral. Feeding time is OK to open the door and, maybe, a quick pet before they realize it. When we think about it, we're actually glad they're that way. I'm sure it's contributed to their longevity.
