Guys, if you look earlier in my thread that's exactly what I said. I'm in the process of installing a shed to help remove stuff that doesn't need to be in the garage.

Which tools John?

I can tell you there are alot of tools all over the bench and tool box right now, due to my wrenching all day on Wednesday. I will get to cleaning that up tomorrow. Were you referring to my vise I was restoring?

Things have been going pretty good, but not much progress in the garage unfortunately. Too many other priorities in life with family/work. I did get some time to wrench on my car which was a good thing.:rocker:

And I don't mean to be rude, Taumac , but I think we have you beat on hot here in AZ, but it all boils( sic) down to what you're used to.

I haven't even touched that hose real.. let me know if you have time to stop by, we could bolt it up with some angle iron. ;)

The humidity part *****. I walk from house (78) to garage (92) humidity % idk but hits you like a brick wall. 30 seconds and starting to sweat. With in 10 mins shirt is soaked. Lived down here 29 yrs and summers are getting unbearable.

Don't ya know it. Mowed the yard yesterday afternoon just before a big thunderstorm rolled through. 78 in the house, 85 in the garage, 104 and cloudy outside. Soaked just starting the mower and I still had 7500 sq. ft. of lawn to mow. Only about 6-7 weeks left until it dries out and cools off a little.

I'm guessing many of you have given up on me by now.. but I finally gave my garage a little bit of time today. I've been meaning to hang my retracting hose real for YEARS now. Well today I did it. Ric (rixtrix1) had a good suggestion of how to mount the real.

I had a location I was planning to mount it already, I was going to mount it between the garage door rails, here:

Ric suggested I bolt on a few supports, and mount the real to them:

So I went ahead and cut some C channel I had laying around, then drilled some holes in it, and mounted it all up..

If 55cadillacking Rick is reading, I plan to paint the mounting rails along with the garage door rails in the future. I still need to run an air line to it, I plan to do that tomorrow.

I also started cutting up some MDF to put in the top of an old a rolling toolbox/working surface I've had for 20 years. I plan to mount one of my vises on it. It was a productive day for me.

Yes Dubber, exactly. Which has me thinking of a few other things. I see you, Rick and others have mounted smaller trash bins up off the ground. I'm thinking the spot on the wall between the garage doors could use a small mounted trash bin. And perhaps something else other than the dart board that never gets used anymore.

I've been spending more time out there over the past month, done car projects and such. I'm starting to look around a lot more at what's where, and how I can use the space more.

Ok, so I got back out in the garage again today. Though I didn't find my air hose I had planned to run from the compressor to the retractable real, I did finish my work on an old (I got it 25 years ago) tool box. My plan was to use it as a working surface, and mount one of my vises on it.

I had some 3/4" MDF laying around, so went ahead and cut it/trimmed it to fit. Here is what it looked like before I cleaned up the top and placed the wood in it.

It's not pretty, but it's a work horse. It will stand up to all the abuse I could throw at it.

It will be nice to have another working surface to work on. Having the vise on it while working on projects should be helpful too.

I also cleaned up a bit, that car seat on the floor between the garage doors is now up out of the way on top of the freezer. Very nice to have it cleaned up.

Kyle: i had no idea you had a thread going on over here on the "dark side" of the journal. i'm only calling it the dark side because unlimited spending can happen if you come over here too often so i stick with the tools section and mainly vises.

just an FYI if you are going to mount the vise to your cart. make sure you have good stops on your wheels or it might be a pain to work on anything in your vise because it will move around. also since you have a nice hunk of RR tie that might work great on another corner if you think your cart can handle the pounding or put the RR on your stationary bench.

looks like you are well on your way to getting the garage as you like it and i bet now that it's under 100 degrees inside your garage now for the next 6 months you might like working in there again.

Best of luck and don't forget to stop at all the garage sales now that the snow birds are back down there and cleaning up their garages. good way to stock a garage with some high quality old tools and i heard you used your Craftsman block which is just one of those good old tools that just doesn't die.

Thanks drivesitfar. I'm still in work on restoring the BIG vise. I will have that done here in a week or two now. I'm finally making some progress. I main challenge is STILL storage. I haven't got the attic or shed done yet.

I am really liking the hose reel idea between the doors. I had not thought about putting one there, but it is a capital idea!! One could then put an upright compressor right under the reel. I am putting that one into memo.
I like the table and the drawers. I would suggest painting that to match your Craftsman Tool Box. As for the vise, well what could I say? It's a WILTON!!! That says it all. I guess poor old Herb Spencer is going to die and go to the Oak Tree on the Hill without ever owning a Freaking WILTON vise. I have looked and looked for one. Take good care of that one!!!! I love it.

Thanks for the comments. As for the Wilton, it's a newer cheap Chinese made one. Not the nice bullet ones you see that others here have. But it will work for light duty work.

And yes, I plan to paint the movable table to match the craftsman tool box. I've got a color scheme in mind I'd like to start on in the garage, but I still have a good deal of cleaning to do before I get to the paint.

I really like all the upgrades! I laughed out loud when I sawy that huge pile of shoes in the garage... I guess that is something I will have to deal with now that we are having kids...

taumac - So far.. very good! :) I've been using this mobile table more than I thought I would. Anytime I'm working on a project, on the car or otherwise, I find myself putting items on this surface. It's kind of like having an island in your kitchen, yes you have lots of counter space around the outside, but we tend to use the island more than the side counters. I just need to cut the angle iron supports off the left side. They were welded on there by the previous owner to support a welding rig (which I don't have). Plus it doesn't fit into the spot I want it to with those sticking out.

I have a few other updates I'm in work on now, I'll provide some pics in a week or so. My only garage related work COMPLETED this weekend was defrosting the freezer and doing some work on the car. :3gears:

Just read through all this. Good job man. I know one of the things that has helped me is just start making a pile of stuff you don't want and it either a) goes up for sale on CL or b)goes in the trash. You start to realize you have quite a bit of stuff that people will pay $20 or more for that you would otherwise throw away. Then, it's nice to have the cash to put back in your garage.

Good inputs, thank you. I've tried to do that, but I have a number of things I want to keep and I need MORE space. My plans include a shed, and attic space for storage but neither of those has happened yet. But they WILL! :) And I have gotten rid of a number of items already which has helped, I just have more to move OUT of the garage.

I did a shed at my old place and it was night and day. I can honestly say, that should be a priority for anyone that has the space. My new house isn't really set up for a shed due to the lot layout (even though the lot is bigger) and that is one thing that kind of bummed me out. I am going to have to get a lot more creative. My last shop was a cut and paste as I needed things. I'm really trying to think things out in the new place. Small steps keep you motivated.

You have made some good progress, I'm looking forward to more. What I've started doing is spending just a little time in the garage each day be it 20 minutes or an hour. At the end of a week you really do have something to show for your work. I go out there early in the morning before my wife and kids are awake and work then. That way it is only taking up time I'd spend watching TV or browsing the internet. Keep moving forward.

jbmatth, thanks for the suggestion. I need to put this as on of my goals for 2015. I had plans for the holiday, but got very sick. I'm starting to get over it.

If I got 2-3 hours a week in the garage, it would very different.
