As promised here is a picture of my progress. This is my bench area (as you can see). A week or two ago I was not able to reach the bench without moving MANY things out of the way. Now I can continue to work on my projects while I continue improving the garage. It looks like a mess under the bench, but I removed every item, threw out alot of junk and put items back that have a use or value. It will need to stay like this until I finish my shed.

Nice work mate, nothing better than having an area ready for work! I think that red vice looks out of place though, might have to pop it in a box and send it to australia :)

Thanks Ken. And I'm afraid the cost to ship the vise down under wouldn't be worth it. You'd be better of finding one local. And that vise will look much better once I finish with it. :)

Taumac - Do you mean the angle iron pieces welded on to the moving table over there on the right? (the Black/Blue one) If so, those were on there when I got that back in highschool. It was a welding cart, and a guy welded those on to hold his welder. I don't have anything that fits in there very well, so I'm going to cut them off.

If I'm incorrect in assuming that's what you're referring too, point out what it is and I'll do my best to answer.

any updates mate?

Not really in the garage.. though I did empty my pool, acid wash it, refill it, replace the filter grids and cut down a LOT of weeds in my back yard. :)

I also moved all of my tropical plants out into the full sun (I grow Plumeria, dragon fruit, cherimoya, bananas and Guava's to name a few). I was going to post some pics of them, but figured you garage guys wouldn't be too into pics of tropical flowers and fruits. :)

My oldest son is home for spring UCLA (University), so I need to help him with some maintenance on his car, and do a ton of work on the wife's van.

On another car note:
In the midst of buying all the parts, I picked up one of these babies for my car!

It's a 180 amp alternator for my car, from DC Power Engineering. It's brand new, and very well built. I've been using autozone (national autoparts store) alternators, and they're just trash! Yes they have a life time warranty on them, but I've had to replace the one in my car twice under warranty, so it's time to setup up to something better.

I also backed and took apart a set of Euro headlights that are for the same car body as mine, but they're dual's. I removed the lenses, so a buddy of mine and I can make molds from them and make clear lenses from acrylic.

Now I need to make some time to install my attic ladder in the garage, but I have a ton of car maintenance to do.

I may be alone in this but tending plants is relaxing and is one of my many interests. Our dragon fruit isn't doing that great but we've got a few bananas ripening. I used to grow tomatoes, cucumbers and miscellaneous vegetables up north but the local farms grow that stuff cheaper than I can in Florida. We had a freak windstorm that knocked over a half-dozen banana plants but the babies will replace them pretty quick (there's another dozen at the other end of the pool enclosure).

Problem with bananas is it's feast or famine. We go from none to 15 pounds.

I guess orchids, hibiscus, bromeliads, desert rose and frangipani would be over the top (if they aren't steel welding projects).

You're probably right about showing plants being a bad idea but I'd like to see them anyway.:supergay:

I grow a few other things: trees, orange, lemon, pomegranate, tuberose, arabian jasmine, madagascar jasmine, peppers, tomatoes, grapes.. and some others I'm starting. But I'll stop with the pics above.

Plants look great mate! looks like you have a bit of a green thumb!

id love to have some decent looking stuff like that in the yard, instead of the rubbish plants i have. Might have to setup an area, i like the idea of having my own fruit.

Thanks Drives!

I had a little time last weekend and need to clear a section of yard where a wild tree or 6 had started growing. Actually it started a few years ago and I cut it to the ground, but this is what grew last year, along with my palm tree that needs trimmed.

It started looking like this:

Even though I'm in the middle of a number of projects, I still look out for interesting tools I could use in the garage. I have been looking for a vintage drill press, and found one locally. This is a 1938 Craftsman 12 3/4" drill press. It works great so far, the belt is just old and tired. I also need to clean it up and add some paint. It will make a great addition to my garage, it's a great size for the bench.

That is a cool looking old drill press there Kyle.

You're lucky that Gerard (Taumac) is on the other side of the country - otherwise he may be eyeing it off to go on the bench on his "wall of Craftsman". :lol_hitti

LOL! Thanks guys.. I really like it, it's a cool little piece of equipment. It's old, works solid and has character. Gerard, I'll need to go check out your thread and see what's new over there...

Looking good, Kyle. Nice find on the drill press. Hopefully I'll be able to come over and see it soon, but for now, Z-Pak, Prednisolone, super cough syrup, guafenesin and sleep. Maybe I'll start feeling alive tomorrow.

That drill press is cool, it is very similar to one I bought made by Duro I think, but tagged as a Montgomery Ward. If you end up needing bearings I was only really able to find one place that had them. Long story but after my wife/kids lost one, my dog might have eaten one, then I finely installed the 3rd. Shipping killed me, as I had a total of $45 in just that one bearing. Make sure to post up pictures of the completed restoration. LOL

JB, what was the "LOL" for? :) I won't be able to mess with the drill press for at least 3 weeks, I have something happening every weekend between now and the second weekend of May. But I am excited to take it apart and clean it up.

I have no idea, perhaps it was a carryover from a previous version of my reply. Maybe my coffee hadn't kicked in just yet.

Been busy too, Kyle. Severe health problems with our youngest. Thankfully resolved for now. If only more time....

Sorry to hear that Ric.. I hope you and the family are feeling better soon. I just finished helping a buddy of mine swap the engine in his 2005 Ford Ranger pickup.

Then me and some buddies of mine had a small car guy get together at my place.

Spent last weekend working on the pool filter, cleaning
the pool (acid wash), cleaning the patio (pressure washers come in handy) and pulling weeds. We also took two loads to the dump. Here is what the pool looks like now. Ready for summer.

And my guava trees are fruiting like crazy right now. Yup, summer is here! A number of my plumeria are also blooming. I'm starting to get my hoop/shade house organized too. It's a work in progress.

On a car related note, I was having some over heating issues with my car, so I figured it would be a good time to upgrade my radiator while replacing my t-stat and water pump. After the work the car ran great with no overheating issues at all... For about two weeks, when the car started to over heat while driving home from work. I pulled over, added some water and found the car blew a coolant line on the back side of the head, under the intake manifold.. Which is between the motor and the firewall. We were flying out for a trip to Seattle the next morning, so I left it until I return. Attached is a picture of the new radiator installed.

Overheating is no fun, I've had troubles with that myself and I seem to spend more money on coolant than any of the parts needed to fix it.

Kyle, I'll be staying tuned for your green thumb updates.

I'd be tickled pink with a 3 car like yours! The list of car updates sounds a lot like the mod list done on my autocrossed 84 Scirocco, now sold unfortunately..

Hey guys, sorry for the long time between post. I've had other priorities in my life (family/work/etc). While chatting off line with Denwood the other day, I mentioned I feel like GJ is kind of like therapy for me. :)

Ok, so with my garage what's that old saying "Two steps forward, one step back"? After helping one buddy swap the motor in his truck, I then helped a different buddy of mine import a bunch of parts, for our kind of cars, from Europe and then me and another buddy went to pick up the parts in Cali (and they ended up in my garage). The pics I attached include my buddy in front of his truck PACKED with boxes. It's a surprise the police didn't stop us while driving from San Diego to the Phoenix area (they might have thought we were transferring some kind of "product"). :) Then a pic of the parts all in my garage. I'm down to one large box to be shipped to Seattle, and then I'll be back on track with the garage again.

My vise project has been at a stand still. I got a SWEET new handle for it from KMScott, but I just haven't made time to finish paint, assembling and mounting of the vise. Very excited to get that project finished.

The vintage drill press I purchased hasn't been touched yet either, just sitting there staring at me. Having a wall of car parts between the bench and myself has made it difficult to work on my projects. In the mean time I have been messing around in the back yard.

As for the backyard (green thumb stuff)... I recently planted a few new items, they include:
Mango (Lemon Zest - supposed to taste like orange sherbet mixed with mango)
Starfruit Tree
Violette de bordeaux fig
Passion Fruit (Fredrick, it's purple, great taste but a bit tart)

Other new smaller plants in the works:
Raspberry cactus (grows a fruit that is supposed to taste like raspberries)
Purple Possum Passion fruit (also purple, but supposed to be sweet)
Mango seedling (started two plants from seeds I got from the mangos we bought at costco)
Avocado seedling (just planted a seed from the fruit we got from the store)
Jackfruit seedling (actually forgot I put the seed in the ground until I saw it growing)

So yeah, I've got a few things I'm growing in the yard. And my plumeria plant count is down to around 20 now (which isn't a bad thing).
