Where can i get a filter wrench for a 3406 cat engine and about how much do they cost?

I can get the exact size tomorrow but guessing like 6 to 8 " or so

I would get the large filter pliers. Unless the filter is in a location were pliers cannot be used. I work on School busses with Cat engines. Mercedes engiens and International engiens. This is what I use. Mine is not from MATCO but it is the same thing without the MATCO stamp. These pliers are half the price without the MATCO brand on it.

What griz posted above is probably your most cost efficient bet...and i have used that plenty of times to take of oil filters.

if your buying your filters from a cat outlet, 185-3630 is the cat part number for a strap wrench that uses a 1/2" square drive, so you just use your ratchet, when i got mine 15 years ago it was around 20 dollars.

I've got those too. IMO they're a lot easier to use than a strap wrench, especially in tight quarters.

i have a couple of the OTC versions
they work better than any strap wrench you'll ever find.

next you'll need a chain wrench for them really, really tight ones......
